Recycling for a ReasonPeople know Good Sammy for our well known retail shops – but we also make a significant contribution to the community through our efforts as a major recycler of donated goods. Some facts:l Our Transport & Logistics area –

using 10 trucks, we service 420 donation bins, complete 1,000 home collections and, as a result, bring in 5.5 million kilograms of donated goods each year.

l Our Recycling Plant procesess the 5.5 million kilograms to create stock for our shops where our 1.24 million customers buy 4.55 million items per year – predominantly recycled goods.

l We prepare large volumes of textiles for export and recycle 265 tonnes of cardboard and paper product and 56 tonnes of metal.

Our supported staff play a major role in our Recycling Plant with many of our team members having worked for GSI for more than 20 years. The activities undertaken in the Recycling Plant, and the commitment from the team in the area, has seen landfill rates halved in the last five year. Thanks to all our staff for helping reduce our footprint.

Chair’s Article The Board of GSI has been busy working on a review of our Strategic Plan. Some emerging new directions that will absorb our energies include:l The GSI brand and service offering;l Our role in improving information access for young people with a disability and their families about

employment and training, making access easier;l Understanding the changing landscape in disability service provision e.g. the National Disability Insurance

Scheme;l Retirement and other life transition options like independent living for people with disabilities, andl Using our internal and external data smarter, to more quickly identify trends so we can be more responsive.

We hope to finalise this Strategy update that builds on the 2020 vision of growth and relevance in the coming months. As always we welcome input from consumers and supporters of GSI, do not hesitate to contact us at [email protected] if you would like to discuss our future with a member of the Divisional Management Team at GSI.

This edition of Good News includes a copy of our Annual Report for those who have not yet received it. It highlights the hard work of staff, volunteers and supporters to ensure GSI continues to provide improved benefits for people with disabilities seeking employment in WA. A download of the Annual Report is available at www.goodsamaritan.com.au/about-us/annual-report.

On behalf of the Board of GSI, thanks to all who have been involved with us over the journey.

Acting CEO’s Article We are proud to announce our first three graduates for school based traineeships via our School Transition to Employment Program (STEP). Congratulations go to Nadia Stevens, Blaid Hambley and Jess Seubert who have completed their Certificate II in Retail Services. We have another 13 students progressing to their traineeships, bringing life to the old Chinese saying “learning is like rowing upstream, not to advance is to drop back”.

Our front cover story on the latest addition to Good Sammy is a combined retail and donation centre in Butler. The new concept provides donors with an easy access location to take their unwanted clothing and bric a brac - good for people with disabilities, good for the local community and good for the environment. If successful we will consider replicating this in other stores. The aim of this strategy is to provide donors with an alternative to the yellow donation bins, especially if donations are breakable or fragile.

Finally, our Auditors have given GSI a clean bill of health on our finances for 2016/17, we remain a sustainable social enterprise wholly dedicated to creating employment opportunities for people with disabilities in Western Australia. Congratulations to all at GSI who contributed to this outcome.

Debbie Cameron – Acting CEO

Footy Fun!!! At Good Samaritan Industries we run a Footy Tipping Competition open to

staff and their friends & families. There is always much banter between staff to get to the top of the footy ladder and win the weekly prize money.

Although it was a close contest, Deborah Kazich led the way at the top of the ladder for most of the season, and finally won the competition with four points clear! Deborah is going to spend her winnings on a holiday to Broome. Many congratulations to Deborah. Deborah Kazich

OptiOns Exhibition GSI Options recently participated in the annual Abilities Expo, coordinated by the Department of Communities – Disability Services. This provided a great opportunity for people with a disability of all ages, and their families and carers, to learn about the latest in disability supports and services.

The theme for the Expo was “Pathways to Success” and over 1,000 people attended.

With over 110 exhibitors, visitors to the event were able to meet with service providers, listen to guest speakers, enjoy performances by Music Rocks and take part in interactive workshops and activities.

Our attendance at the Expo gave us the opportunity to provide information and highlight the quality services we have that can assist people in their individual employment journey.

For more information about GSI Options’ services and supports please telephone 9463 0562.

Putting Safety FirstThe safety of our staff, volunteers and customers is of primary importance to us. We have continued our focus on workplace safety training and in the last few months we have:l Provided fire safety training to all our Wardens,l Manual handling refresher training for staff; and l Undertaken evacuation drills for all sites.

An external consultant (Alcan) reviewed our evacuation at Canning Vale and they were impressed with the speed with which we were able to evacuate a large number of people in a very short period of time. Well done to everyone involved. Some new safety initiatives have been introduced into our transport fleet to minimise the risk of injuries when loading and unloading our trucks. These include:l “Spotter” system now in place for deliveries at retail stores, andl A warning light has been installed in all trucks that activates when the tail lift is lowered.

Improving workplace safety is an ongoing process and we will continue to look for new and innovative ways to ensure everyone goes home safe.

Ryan is happy at Hungry JacksMeet Ryan – a young man with a disability who has been registered as a jobseeker with Options for over 40 weeks and a recent graduate of the Options Mirrabooka Job Hub.Ryan was a keen and active participant in the program where he received support and guidance from his Coordinator Sue, his Trainer Dani and his Employer Consultant Francoise. Following the Job Hub, and with Francoise’s support, Ryan commenced employment at Hungry Jacks Perth and he is “over the moon”!The team at Options are now working hard to ensure Ryan has the support he needs in the workplace, including on-the-job support and arranging for an Assessor to look at ways to make work easier for him. He is very happy in his new role and is embracing work life. We look forward to continuing to support Ryan and see him reach his full potential! Ryan at Hungry Jacks

GSI commended for its servicesAn independent evaluation was recently completed in relation to the quality of services we deliver to people receiving one-to-one services and supports from us.

This was the first time we have had evaluation of this type, with the final report being provided to every person with a disability who receives these services from GSI.

To sum up the outcome, the Evaluator described the final report as “…a very positive reflection of the excellent work and outcomes being achieved (by GSI)”.
