Four goals, but still not enough e girls walk off the field slowly and grab their waters, murmuring “good job” and “you played well” to one another as they all sit down near the bench, waiting for their coaches to speak. “I know I don’t look like it, but I’m happy with that game,” Mat Hen- best, the head coach, said. “e aitude and the play-making ability; that makes me happy.” A lile under two hours earlier, the girls started their game against Ponderosa High School. Not long aſter the kick off, a cross entered the RC goal box, and finished to the back of the net, earning shocked breathes from the girls on the sidelines, who were shocked and disap- pointed with such an early goal. Aſter a few more minutes of play, a Ponderosa player missed on a wbreakaway, and it bounced off of the goalie and straight to the feet of more opposing team members, with no Jags in sight. Another shot was fired. e ball goes straight to the goalie, where she tucked it safely into her stomach. e sidelines held their breath again. Aſter another ten minutes passed, the Mustangs scored another goal. e team started to lose hope. e score rarely goes this high, puing the Jags in a tough position early on. e girls received a burst of hope when Meghan Kilkenny ’13, was fouled aſter being tripped from behind in the 18-yard-box, giving her a penalty kick. e entire team held their breath once more as she placed the ball on the PK line and backed up to take the shot. She ran up to the ball, calm and relaxed, and placed it low in the leſt corner. making it 2-1, mustangs. “I think we just needed a break,” Henbest said. “When we got the goal it raised everybody’s spirits.” Spirits were raised enough that even when Ponderosa scored yet another goal before the end of the half, the team didn’t stop playing, but put in even more effort than before. Just before the end of the half Lacy Hardaway ’11, got a breakaway. All the girls on the bench stood up with anticipation as she entered the box and the goalie came out to meet her. e goalie dove at Hardaway’s feet and grabbed onto the ball, causing Hardaway to trip over her. e whistle blew and the girls came off the field, holding their sides. “Something happened in the midfield in the past few minutes and you guys just took over,” Henbest said at halſtime as the girls panted heavily, taking long drinks of water. “One more goal and they won’t be feeling so easy.” ey got their goal. Tarrah Tate ’10, scored aſter a few minutes of play, making the girls on the sidelines scream and jump up and down in unison. “is is as excited as I’ve been all season,” Maddie Landis ’13, said as the team took their places on the field for the kick off. e clock seemed to count down the minutes faster now as the game progressed. Each scoring chance earned squeals of excitement from the players siing on the bench. e excitement was put out as a lucky shot bounced over sopho- more Briney Evanson’s head, and then two more goals were put into the far corners of the goal, which gave Ponderosa a 6-2 lead. e girls on the sidelines sat talking about the bad luck of the goals as the ball went once more to the center of the field for another kick off, when suddenly screams from the field brought their aention back to the game. Hardaway was running back to the center of the field surrounded by all of her teammates, who were giving her hugs and high fives. e score was 3-6, and though chances were slim, they were back in the game. As they started to play again, a foul was called just outside the box, and Kilkenny took the kick. Screams erupted again from the field as the shot soared into back of the net. 6-4 Ponderosa. Play continued frantically for the next few minutes as every girl on the team tried to press forward. In the last minute a Ponderosa player streaked toward the goal once more, until it was just her and Evanson. She dove and missed as the ball hit the back of the net once more, ending the game at a final 7-4. e whistle blew and the girls came off of the field breathing heavy. ey went over to their bags and grabbed their waters and sat down around the coaches as they pulled off their cleats and shin guards. “at’s one of the weirdest games I’ve ever been a part of,” Henbest said. “I’m proud of you guys, I know that you can beat Heritage, and I know that you can beat Regis.” As the girls dispersed to the locker room their coaches offered words of encouragement, but a loss is still a loss. Four goals, but still not enough

The girls walk off the field slowly and grab their waters, murmuring “good job” and “you played well” to one another as they all sit down near the bench, waiting for their coaches to speak. “I know I don’t look like it, but I’m happy with that game,” Mat Hen-best, the head coach, said. “The attitude and the play-making ability; that makes me happy.” A little under two hours earlier, the girls started their game against Ponderosa High School. Not long after the kick off, a cross entered the RC goal box, and finished to the back of the net, earning shocked breathes from the girls on the sidelines, who were shocked and disap-pointed with such an early goal.
