PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE The club lost a dedicated member in Stephen Priest. We will miss his enthusiasm and his sense of humour. Michael Roach our District Liaison for the Drought relief has worked tirelessly in his efforts to assist the farmers and we have joined with the local Rotary Clubs in the project Adopt a Town. Michael and Jay travelled out west to Jericho to assist with the town’s eventful weekend organised by the local policeman. He is keeping us all up to date with his diary and we have been following their exploits on Facebook. Please support the Big event happening on the 14th October, Festival in the Park in aid of our commitment to the Drought relief. There are plenty of opportunities to assist over the next few months so please help and put your name on rosters to assist where you can. Thanks to the social club members spent a great afternoon playing barefoot bowls. President Sheila Glew

ADOPT A TOWN
JERICHO
THIS IS THE SLOGAN OF THE LIONS CLUBS IN QLD
Michael and Jay have been out west in Jericho and other town along the way (hence the
map for easy identification) for a couple of weeks. They have sent photos back to Bev and
me to publish. Bev does the Facebook which some of you have and I do the Pelican Brief
so between us, let’s cover the field.

From one grateful Acting Senior Constable Luke Young. Officer in Charge – Jericho Police Station.
We had an awesome turnout. Attendance of Queensland Police, SES, Royal flying doctors, Queensland rural fire
brigade, Lions clubs (Emerald, Tewantin, Townsville), Men’s shed Jericho, Country Women’s Association, Louise
LAFFEY and her team (St Ursula’s Old girls network), Emma Cook from Rural financial services. We had volunteers
for the face painting, a hairdresser who didn’t stop all day, music provided by multiple talented artists.
Between the Men’s shed, Lions, and CWA ladies cooking up they were serving approximately 250-300 meals per
sitting Breakfast lunch and dinner Saturday and Breakfast and Lunch Sunday. Even had free slushy and ice-cream
which was sold out by 2pm.
Without Bid foods, Campbell’s and PFD food donations it would not have been possible to cater for this event.
We had approximately ten trucks and twelve trailers, 20 plus ton of sweet potatoes. Groceries, bags, dog food,
horse feed, licks, enormous amount of fruit and vegetables. I have never seen so many strawberries and cherry
tomatoes in my life. Everything you could possibly think of.
We had approximately five tractors and forklifts donated and used to unload the donations. Multiple trucks
needed an army of persons to unload the hay by hand.
Once the sun set on Saturday Police orchestrated the Blue light bush disco with the comments made by locals that
they have never seen so many children in town in one location.
We got to do the rain dance in the evening after speeches and thank all involved. Rough estimates of donations
exceeded $40,000 but the total cost of food, time, fuel and hire of equipment would near $200,000 for the event.
I wanted to thank ABC news, Country Life and the Longreach Leader for attending and supporting the event and
Col Jackson from the Longreach Leader for getting behind the event from the start.
I wanted to thank every single person who helped fundraised, donated money and time for this cause. Without
you all this would never have happened.
The residents of Jericho will be forever grateful and feedback that they have never seen anything like this before.
Nearly a week later I am still taking care packages to properties in need and the last pallet of Pumpkins has just
finished.
I have been in talks with Louise, Luffy and the Lions clubs. This wasn’t the end but a start. It didn’t solve people’s
problems it only delayed them. I have future plans to help the town and I am working to getting the help where it
is needed.
Lastly, I want to thank our very own Town Nurse Lesley Delandelles. I am grateful for such a wonderful person
looking after this town and I am proud to work alongside you.
All I can say is thank you.

The photos of the wildflower and sand dunes in the slide presentation were
impressive. The outback never dies.
