This year’s presentation focused on work experience for school leavers. Local councils are, in many rural towns, major employers and so are able to provide a large range of work experience opportunities ranging from clerical administration positions to planning and outside works including construction, parks and horticulture. The provision of genuine meaningful work experience can demonstrate genuine opportunity to school leavers and also introduce councils to possible high caliber future employees. South Australian Local Government manages 11% of the nation’s local road network. South Australia has 7.2% of the nation’s population, but only receives 5.5% of the Local Road Grant Funding. The financial loss to the District Council of Robe is $195,120 over the next four years. Why don’t SA communities deserve the same Federal support as in other States? That is the question left in the minds of SA Council Members and officers as they digest the outcome of the 2014 Federal Budget. The axing of a key equity measure, the $18 million Supplementary Local Road Fund, shocked most Councils and LGA officials. It will mean local roads in every other State/Territory will be funded at hundreds of dollars per kilometer more than in SA. The LGA Board has expressed dismay at the outcome and has authorized the development of a strategy to recover a fair share of funding for SA. “It’s the Government’s right, with Parliament’s support, to reduce Government spending as it sees fit. However we are genuinely shocked that Government has knowingly applied a cut that only affects South Australia and it now funds our local roads at a lower level than any other State”, LGA President David O’Loughlin said. Other changes to the budget appear to impact more fairly across Australia, including a freeze on the growth of Financial Assistance Grants which will mean a loss of about $924m in expected growth and mooted changes to Federal assistance to the States in relation to pensioner concessions on Council rates. Welcome to Nick Brown Council welcomes Mr Nick Brown to Councils staff taking up the position of Deputy Chief Executive. Nick comes to Robe with a wealth of experience in rural and regional Councils plus extensive experience in waste management and Nick’s appointment will strengthen Councils ability to meet its legislative compliance requirements and provide efficient and effective service to our community. CCOWS are shivering with the change in weather. But, we seem to be able to cope with change, we even find it exhilarating. CCOWS staff has changes of children, working colleagues, physical sites… each of their working days. Yet they manage to very quickly establish trusting relationships with the children in their care. It’s amazing that sometimes we may only see a child on one day a week, but after three visits they are comfortable with being with many children in a strange place, and doing different things than they have experienced at home. We all know that when we are made welcome, acknowledged, assisted, share smiles and laughter …it goes a long way to reassuring us, making us feel comfortable and letting us feel special. At a meeting last week, I jokingly said that we hired people according to the size of their laps. That’s because it is a frequent sight in the mornings to see children having a sit with a member of staff, until the warm welcome, conversation and sharing helps them find the confidence they need to face the day. It’s a lovely sight, and a privilege for staff to be able to assist children through that transition from home and family to being with their child care family. Robyn and the CCOWS team.

ROBE PRIMARY SCHOOL FETE The staff, students and parents of Robe Primary School would sincerely like to thank the following businesses (some from a long way from Robe), local tradesmen, and community organizations, for their extremely generous and amazing support of our 2014 Easter Fete. The incredible support received made our fete a huge success, actually the most successful ever, and resulted in us raising a massive amount of money; at this point of time very close to $15,000!! All of this money will be spent on buying resources that will support student learning and improve their learning environment. A huge thank you must be given to Stacey Wirth and Anne Legoe who organized and co-ordinated the incredibly hard working Parents and Friends ‘Fete Committee’ consisting of Lisa Enright, Kate Dutton, Lisa Falkner, Kerry Carroll, Karla Dew; these ladies also deserve a big thank you. I also extend a sincere thank you to all of the parents and friends (some past students) who worked extremely hard on the day; quite a few worked double or even triple shifts!! Thanks again everyone and we really hope that we receive the same level of support for our 2015 Easter Fete. The very much appreciated sponsors and supporters of the Robe Primary School Fete were:

ROBE - ‘SOUTH AUSTRALIA’S FAVOURITE SEASIDE TOWN’

presents the following EVENTS FOR WINTER AND SPRING 2014

My name is Jamie Aitken. The Robe Tourism Association has asked me to work with them to stage a number of events to run

through this winter and spring. These events are designed to offer exciting reasons to visit Robe and increase the visitation to

Robe over the “non – peak” tourism seasons. Robe is a unique seaside village combining natural beauty with great food,

wine, art, architecture as well as fabulous venues for music and various shows. WE plan to showcase these via the terrific

events below. Please note the following events are in the planning stages and some dates are yet to be confirmed.

We welcome community feedback and participation to make them happen! For more information, or to get involved please

contact Deb Mackey - Secretary -Robe Tourism Association on 0401 803 137 [email protected]

JULY EVENT - “Home Brewing”

Workshops and Competition

Dates : Sat 26th & Sun 27th July

This event will offer lectures on brewing many types of beer,

stout and porters, by acclaimed brewers. It will feature a

home brew competition, judged by experts. We are planning a

“best of the land and sea banquet” with matching beers for

Saturday night and on Sunday a “hair of the dog” beer

tastings and a grazing lunch with matched winning beers from

the competition.

We expect to have a significant sponsor, which will enable us

to promote the event throughout Western Victoria and the

Limestone coast region.

SEPTEMBER EVENT - ‘The blessing of the Fleet’ Seafood Banquet

Dates: Sun 28th September

The “Blessing of the Fleet” is a wonderful ceremony which is

conducted in villages and fishing ports all over the world to

bless the local fishing fleet and pays great respect to the

fishing community. This year, following the ceremony and the

“diving for the cross” we are planning a great seafood

banquet to be served at the harbour side, along with local

wines and music.

OCTOBER EVENT ‘The Robe Aviators Society - Giant Fly In’.

Dates: Fri 17th Sat 18th Sun 19th October

We are inviting aviators from 11 aero clubs in Victoria and

South Australia to fly into Robe for a celebration of aviation.

We expect up to 80 aircrafts included in the event. This will be

the opportunity for visitors to be shown the aircraft by the

pilots who will explain the ins and outs of their machines. The

line up of aircrafts will range from 80 year old Tiger moths and

Austers to Chinese fighter trainers. The event will run over 2

days, with catering available at the airfield for lunch on

Saturday and breakfast on Sunday. On Saturday night the

eateries of Robe will put on a special aviators dinner including

Loop the Loop soup, Barrel role beef, fluffy cloud puddings,

rocket fuel reds and high octane whites. On the Sunday

morning the aircrafts will take off for their home bases after

flying over Robe. Sunday lunch will be the ground crew picnic

conducted in all the town eateries, for those of us left behind.

AUGUST EVENT - “Robe...Indoors”

A celebration of winter food, wine, art and music’.

Dates: Sat 23th & Sun 24th August – to be confirmed

“Indoors” brings together all that’s great about winter inside at

Robe...

Robe’s Chefs will demonstrate the preparation of special

winter dishes using local seasonal fish, beef, lamb and game.

They will be supported by local fishermen and farmers, who

will talk about the fish and meat they catch and grow. Learn

filleting techniques and which meat cuts are best for various

dishes. Warming winter menus will feature across Robe

eateries for the weekend. These dining events will also

feature wines from participating wineries. Listen to the wine

makers as they present and match their wines to delicious

local regional winter dishes.

Simultaneously, we will be staging a variety of musical

performances scheduling them throughout the day and

evening across selected (indoor) venues.

Art by acclaimed Robe artists will be on display and available

for sale in all the outlets participating in the event.

NOVEMBER EVENT “Classic Spring”

Dates: Sat 29th and Sun 30th November

These dates co–incide with the existing successful

Robe Classic Golf Tournament.

A celebration of crayfish, spring produce and busking plus a

POOL OPERATORS TRAINING COURSE – 12th and 13th AUGUST 2014

Robe Council is pleased to offer an opportunity for you and your staff to attend a Pool Operators Training Course to be

held in Naracoorte on Tuesday 12th

and Wednesday 13th

August 2014, 8.30am – 5pm, in the Naracoorte Town Hall,

Smith Street, Naracoorte.

Mount Gambier City Council is also hosting the same Pool Operators Training Course on 14th and 15th August 2014,

8.30am – 5pm, in the Leadlight Room at the Institute Building, Commercial Street, Mount Gambier (entry from Institute

alleyway in the Cave Gardens).

The two (2) day training course will assist pool operators in developing the required skills and knowledge to

competently maintain public swimming pools/spas. The training course covers a number of modules including pool

disinfection and chemical balance. Through prior arrangement with the provider (min 4 weeks before course), the first

day of the course is able to be completed externally, to limit the effect of staff absence on small businesses. The current

fee is $455 for the two (2) days and must be paid at least one (1) week prior to the course being held. The payment is to

be made direct to the provider, Aquatics Information.

A minimum number of five (5) participants are required for the course to be held in the South East. If the required

minimum number of participant’s payments is not received by the provider within the timeframe, the course maybe

cancelled. Further information can be found at www.aquaticsinformation.com.au The two (2) day training course is

suitable for the induction of new staff members: including those employees who may undertake pool maintenance

periodically (e.g. when staff on leave). The training would also benefit existing pool maintenance staff seeking to refresh

their skills and knowledge.

Please note that the first training day will include an onsite pool inspection and you will need to provide your own

transport to the venue. I encourage you and your staff to take up this local training opportunity. Should you require any

further information please do not hesitate to contact me on 0427 330 933, or Shane Ince at Aquatics Information during

business hours on 0402 409 495.
