Issue 29 May 2013 - Page 1 Issue 29 May 2013 Dear Parents and Students, BHHS was proud once again last weekend to open our doors as part of the city’s Artists Open House Festival. The painting and photography that our girls produced was simply stunning and many of the visitors were taken aback by the quality of the work on display. Similarly, last night, parents and friends of our Year 11 GCSE Art students were impressed and delighted by the art work the girls had produced during the course and which was so spectacularly displayed with the help of Mrs Croydon and Mrs Guthrie. My overwhelming impression was of the girls’ serious commitment to a subject that can be seen by some people as peripheral to an education curriculum and I read with interest last week’s publication by the England Arts Council of an analysis by the Centre for Economics and Business Research of the contribution of arts and culture to the national economy. The findings included: ................................... Arts and culture make up 0.4 per cent of GDP* – a significant return on the less than 0.1 per cent of government spending invested in the sector. Arts and culture is a sector of significant scale with a turnover of £12.4 billion and a GVA** of £5.9 billion in 2011 Arts and culture generate more per pound invested than the health, wholesale and retail, and professional and business services sectors. The arts and culture sector provides 0.45 per cent of total UK employment and 0.48 per cent of total employment in England. At least £856 million per annum of spending by tourists visiting the UK can be attributed directly to arts and culture The economic contribution of the arts and cultural sector has grown since 2008 despite the UK economy as a whole remaining below its output level before the global financial crisis ................................... Clear evidence, if more were needed, of the contribution that art and creativity make to our quality of life, as a society and as individuals – something that, thankfully, many of our girls understand. My congratulations to Clemmie, Megan, Emily and Farhannah - all of whom won their section in the Years 6 to 11 Art and Photography competition. Notwithstanding the weather, I hope everyone has a pleasant Bank Holiday! Dear Parents and Students,BHHS was proud once again last weekend to open our doors as part of the city’s Artists Open House Festival.

The painting and photography that our girls produced was simply stunning and many of the visitors were taken aback by the quality of the work on display. FootballCongratulations to Faye Hannaford in 8T. Her football team, Southdown U14 girls team were crowned Sussex U14 League Champions for the season just finished 2012-13. This followed on from two runner up performances by the team in the U14 Sussex Cup and the U14 Sussex League Cup. This has been a fantastic season for the team and especially for Faye as she is playing with and against girls that are at least a year older then her.

A massive well done to Maya Wall (Year 8) and Tia Pavlides (Year 7) who represented our school in the final of the Brighton Festival Peacock Poetry Prize on Saturday 18th May. Maya’s excellent poem won her category and it was a cause for a double celebration as it was also her 13th birthday. Creative Director of the Brighton Festival and much loved children’s poet Michael Rosen judged the poems and presented the prizes with charm and warmth. He even led the room full of young poets in a rousing rendition of “Happy Birthday” to Maya rounding off a wonderful afternoon. Huge congratulations to both Tia and Maya and keep writing! Mr Edmunds

“I decided to enter the Peacock Poetry Prize with no idea I would get anywhere near winning. The theme was “a changing city”. There were a few workshops in the Easter holidays to help competitors but I was away and unable to attend. Fortunately the kind person running these emailed me some of the things they were going to do in the workshop and then gave me some advice on my draft. I was delighted to be shortlisted with Tia Pavlides from year 7 – we were two of only twelve on the shortlist and I had got into the final four people for my age category. Everyone on the shortlist was invited to the final announcement on the 18th May in the Pavilion Tea Rooms. The timing was uncanny since the 18th May was my 13th birthday! I took two friends with me on the day when Michael Rosen was going to be announcing the winner. He started out by giving a prize to everyone who had got into the final. After that he read out the people who had won: Sam Charles aged 10 won in the 9-11 category with his poem ‘Walking on Water’; Bethan Clarke won in the 16-18 category with ‘Subtly Obvious’ and my poem ‘Cat’s Eye View’ won in the 12-15 category. I was thrilled when I won but also very surprised because the other entries were so good. It was the perfect birthday present.” Maya Wall 8U

Cat’s Eye View

Busy streets,Glaring sun,

Hiding in alleysTill night comes.

Millions of wheels,Billions of feet,

Dangers galoreIn Summer’s heat.

Children shout,Screaming in glee,

This warm sunny spotIs ruined for me.

Dusk fallsOn watchful eyes,

A frenzy of lifeAs the moon arrives.

Flurry of action,Under streetlights’ glow,

Skittering pawsStarts the night’s show. The city has changed,Transformed for cats,

We run along rooftopsFlying like bats.

Artist’s Open Houses

Last weekend Brighton & Hove High School sponsored an art project in The St Ann’s Well Gardens Spring Festival. As part of the celebrations it was decided to recreate a fun picture of St Ann’s Well Gardens on a GRAND SCALE!Local artist, Linda Boucher agreed to design and provide a piece of artwork for the project. The picture was divided into 42 sections, which were then be scaled up onto 42 canvases to make a giant multi-canvas masterpiece. Each section was completed by both children and adults and assembled to create a fabulous work of art. We exhibited the final piece as part of our ‘Artists Open House’ and the plan is to donate it to a local hospital.

Dear Parents,It has great to be back in school this week after a fantastic week in France with Year 6. As I told them today, it was a real pleasure for us and having taken many of these types of trips over the years I can genuinely say they were the best behaved, and most interested of all the groups I have taken. They were a pleasure to take and it was a really memorable week.Best WishesSian Cattaneo

NURSERY NEWSWe have had good fun in Nursery this half term with our topic Amazing Africa and have found out so many things about Africa.

Issue 29 May 2013 - Page 5

The weather may not be quite what we would experience in parts of Africa, but sill the Nursery girls have been making the most of the outside area with the water tray being especially popular. We now have an abundance of clean babies in Nursery!!

We would like to say again an enormous thank you to Remi’s mum who gave up a large part of her day to set up our Safari themed role-play and provided us with many resources. All of which have enhanced our topic.

Also, a big thank you to Remi’s grandma who made us such fantastic clothes for the role-play. They have provided hours of fun.
