Forward – Preparing an ISO standard
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies).
The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees.
Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has
been established has the right to be represented on that committee.
International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with
ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International
Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical
standardization.

PORTO Nov. 2013 – ISO/TC 176 Meeting
• In this meeting, WG5 was terminated
and
• the establishment of project committee PC288 was announced.
How it worksInternational Standards are drafted in accordance with
the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare
International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to
the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75
% of the member bodies casting a vote.

ISO 21001 Briefing Note
What is ISO 21001?ISO 21001 provides a common management tool for organizations
providing educational products and services capable of meeting
learner and other customer requirements and needs.
It is a stand-alone management system standard, based on the ISO 9001
(without being a sector application), and aligned with other
management system standards through the application of the High
Level Structure.
ISO 21001 focuses on the specific interaction between an educational
organization, the learner, customers and other relevant interested
parties.
Who would be interested in ISO 21001?
ISO 21001 specifies requirements for an EducationalOrganization Managements System (EOMS) when such anorganization :
a) needs to demonstrate its ability to consistently provide, share and facilitate the construction of knowledge tolearners conforming with applicable statutory andregulatory requirements
b) aims to enhance satisfaction of learners, othercustomers, and personnel through the effectiveapplication of its EOMS, including processes forimprovement of the system
To whom does this standard apply?
All requirements of ISO 21001 are generic and intended
to be applicable to all educational organizations that
provide, share and facilitate the construction of
knowledge to learners through teaching, training or
research, regardless of type, size and product and service
provided. The standard therefore applies to the
management system of any organization which utilizes a
curriculum to provide, share and transfer knowledge.
Who can benefit from ISO 21001?Although learners and educational organizations worldwide are the mainbeneficiaries from this new management system standard, allstakeholders (everyone) will benefit from the output of standardizedmanagement systems in educational organizations.
Examples of educational organizations include pre-school, primary, elementary, middle schools, high schools, colleges, universities, adulteducation, vocational education and training, tutoring or coaching centers, training organizations, education/training departments and consultants.Another distinction exists in the funding source including public (subsidized),private (commercial), self-sufficient (internally generated revenue), and notfor profit (sponsored) interested parties involved in determiningrequirements will benefit from this International Standard (teachers, parents, Government, NGOs, trade unions, etc.).
Potential benefits of ISO 21001The potential benefits to an organization of implementing an EOMS based on this international standard are:
