ISLIP NEWSSUMMER 2017

I hope you enjoy it. The articles have a musical theme, so while you enjoy some of the villager’s garden photos, we will start with “FLOWERS IN THE RAIN” The Move 1968

(Quiz buffs will know it was the first record played on Radio One)

It’s not been long since our last newsletter, a valuable and essential way of communicating with the whole village. Unfortunately, still, nobody has come forward to take on this fairly

simple and worthwhile task, so the production of this bumper edition REALLY WILL

PROBABLY be the very last one!

In view of my previous comments obviously this introduction’s title, The Last Time by the Rolling Stones 1965 speaks for itself!

I have put this together to remind you all about what goes on in the village, what valuable facilities we have, and what a great place it is for us to live.

We will also celebrate some of the talent we are lucky enough to have in Islip.

Perhaps somebody who likes to write, will then come forward to keep the newsletter alive?

“Sally Sally pride of our Alley” Gracie Fields 1956

We are proud to advise those of you who do not already know, that Sally Morris, a stalwart of this village who has done so much for so many, has been rewarded by the

Queen with an honour, Sally will shortly be presented with the British Empire Medal, a great achievement CONGRATULATIONS!

After that exciting news, we will continue with our musical theme

“THE GAMES PEOPLE PLAY” Jo South 1969

RECREATION GROUND

The new play equipment is proving popular with the village “kids” both young and old-enough-to-know-better and it’s great to see that it is providing so much enjoyment. The zipwire has now been fully-repaired in time for a long-hot Summer and the 2nd goal has been re-instated and netted-up for

all to use.

We want to give a very big thank you to Ady Pendred who rounded-up some willing volunteers to dig the holes and heave the VERY heavy goalpost back in situ. It can’t have been easy and I am sure we all agree it was well worth it. To show our appreciation Joe Pendred (17), Alfie Pendred (14), Jack Tye (17), Codey (11), Jack (10) and Alfie (10), pictured below, all received shiny new footballs and

accessories so they can test out their hard work.

On a more serious note, we do need to ask those using and enjoying the rec to take some responsibility for the amount of rubbish that gets dropped in there. The Parish Council provide rubbish bins and pay for them to be emptied but at certain times of the year,

3

particularly the Summer, the bins fill up quicker than we are able to empty them. If you find the bins full, could you please try and take your rubbish home with you. There is a bin near the phone box on the High Street just outside the Rec and another near the Old Post Office on the corner of the High Street and Mill Road if you have too much to carry all the way home. Not a day goes by that Parish Councillors and kind members of the public don’t pick up at least some rubbish and it is not uncommon for 3-4 bin bags to be collected after a sunny weekend. The Parish Council is trying to organise more bins but in the meantime PLEASE help us to keep the place tidy for all to enjoy.

Regrettably, since the article was written, we have had a number of instances of anti-social behaviour, which have marred villagers and their children’s use of the new facilities. There have been instances of under-age teenagers, drinking and generally behaving badly, consequently leaving broken bottles, and all manner of rubbish around the field. If you are

a parent, we would ask: Where is your teenage child this evening? We would ask all villagers to keep an eye out for silly behaviour and to report anything to the parish clerk’s

e mail address as shown in this letter.

P.S. URGENT Youngsters have been seen during the recent hot spells, swimming in the river near the works site, this is VERY DANGEROUS, please ensure you and your children

keep safe. Thanks for your help.

PHONE BOX RESTORATION & VILLAGE DEFIBRILLATOR

We will soon be installing a defibrillator for the use of villagers in an emergency. We will have it fitted in the old phone box, which now belongs to the parish council.

The box is currently being refurbished, could you help with this task, could you give a hand to get this project finished, if you can, just get in touch with the parish clerk.

The English Rose

A summer morn, the air is sweet,A cool breeze softly blows.

It beckons me to come and greetThe fair and lovely rose.

And in the early morning peaceMy heart finds its repose.

All trials and tribulations cease;Defeated by the rose.

Forgetting turmoil, fear and hate, The world and all its woes,

I take this time to contemplateThe charismatic rose.

Regrets are shadows, past and gone;I find release from those

Each time I pause to gaze uponThe fragrant, dew-kissed rose.

This quiet place, so still and calm;It leads me to suppose

My troubled spirit finds its balmWithin the perfect rose.

So many write of this fair landIn poetry and prose,

But nothing speaks of EnglandLike the glory of her rose.

As the football season has ended, we can report that the facility is being fully used and the pavilion hosts not only sports activities, but art classes, choir rehearses and there are numerous other users.

Summer cricket is in full swing, why not take a stroll down one weekend and enjoy the crack of leather on willow, they might even offer you a cup of tea.

Update on the river bridge works

From HIGHWAYS DEPARTMENT

What we are doing/ the benefits The old bridge has now been removed and in the short term there is no pedestrian

river crossing.

The new bridge will be higher meaning that it provides a more attractive and safe route for boats which will encourage tourism to the area and the River Nene, for pedestrians, it will be

wider and with much improved disabled access.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your patience during this necessary bridge closure, which is now experiencing some unavoidable delays. Regrettably, work on

We are delighted to report that following completion of works on the sports field, a new bench has been

installed as a memorial to Cory Martin Mayes-James, an ideal place from which to watch an innings or two.

Women’s Tour of Britain Cycle Race.

Stage one Daventry to Kettering via Islip.

This was a 5 day stage race and is the only major stage race for women on the racing calendar. The 1st stage came though Islip, it had all the top women professional riders from around the globe in their respective trade teams and each team has 8 riders in it. The stage was 147.5 kms or 91.7 miles long (all major races are always measured in kilometres). Each team has at least one team car which follows the race at the back of the bunch (known as the Peloton), should a rider get clear of the peloton by riding off the

front, by 30 seconds, then a neutral service car (not connected to trade team) will follow that rider. In case they require assistance, for replacing a wheel in the event of a puncture or bike change.

If fact Katarzya Niewadoma the Polish Champion of Wm3 Pro Cycling Team did break clear of the peloton with 47km to the finish and stayed away until the finish line in Kettering and won the 1st stage. She did in fact become the overall winner of the event, due to her team who kept her out of any crashes, which enabled her to finish near the front each day.

The race had a number of police outriders who came in front and behind the riders though Islip to stop all the traffic, along with event marshals, to ensure a smooth race for the riders.

Residents of Islip came out to cheer the riders as they came though the Village on route from Lowick Road, High Street and Chapel Hill before turning left over Nine Arches Bridge.

“ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE” The Beatles 1967

Its TOM LOVE’S VILLAGE ROUND UP

News from St Nicholas Church Islip

A huge thank-you to everyone who has supported the recent events held in the church. The concert by the Corby Male voice choir in May was an excellent evening featuring a wide range of songs.

The gift weekend at the beginning of July was also popular. Visitors came from across the county to view the flower displays and catch-up with friends locally. A quarter peal on the bells of St Nicholas was a wonderful way to close the week-end.

Dates you may wish to add to your diary are:

October 27 – 29 – The art and craft show will take place featuring work by local artists and crafters.

December 9-10 is the week-end for the Christmas tree festival. Anyone who would like to can enter a tree – entry is free and details will be circulated very soon –just keep the week-end free.

Everyone is welcome in church at any time you do not have to wait for a special event. If you are a cyclist or enjoy walking perhaps you might like to participate in the historic churches stride and ride event on Saturday September 9th. This provides the opportunity to visit a range of churches – as many as you can fit in between 10 am and 6 pm.

SPEEDWATCH UPDATE

For some time now, we have been trying, for the safety of all residents, to get people to stop speeding through the village. For some weeks now, you will have seen manned speed cameras at various sites in the village, sadly this has resulted in some drivers being reported to the police. Please be sensible and slow down, we don’t want to see you getting fined or having points on your licence,

we just want you to think and: SLOW DOWN“IN THE HALL OF THE MOUNTAIN KING” Edvard Greig
