The case for wireless condition monitoring
Temperature/vibration/strain etc. condition monitoring: allowing for preventative maintenance rather than reactive maintenance, minimizing downtime, wiring costs etc.

Monitoring rotating equipment
In June 2013 Perpetuum won a contract to supply Southeastern Railways with energy harvester powered wireless sensors to monitor the wear of wheel bearings for 148 Trains. 10mW – 15mW of continuous power for the duration of the journey

Some industries more demanding than others
• Monitoring industial equipment in factories has different requirements to
monitoring oil wells, aircraft integrity, etc.
• Difference in development/testing/robustness verification times
• Automotive sector also needing cycle times of up to 15+ years due to safety considerations.

RFID - IoT
Conclusions TODAY Suppliers are mostly not profitable yet, the most successful ones have revenues of a few tens of millions of $/year Currently identifying what IoT means.
SUPPLIER END-POINT Wide scale adoption and profitability CORE CHALLENGES • Clear value service offering for each
of the end-user sectors targeted • System supply, integration of legacy
systems • Cost of ownership – ROI: Proven user
cases (lessons from RFID?) • Industry will be smaller volume in the
short term. Government incentives create volume demand.
• Consumer electronics will create massive markets.

Conclusions Significant interest so far mostly in the building automation sector. In October 2013, ABB, Bosch, Cisco, and LG, signed a memorandum which would allow diverse devices and services to interoperate, and to exchange information with each other. But…
• Industrial automation building up pace, some sectors more
difficult to penetrate than others.
• Large worldwide investment in thermoelectric generators for waste heat recovery in vehicles but also many other options becoming relevant in the automotive space (GPS,TPMS, automated driving..)
• Integration of the functionality of mobile platforms will open up significant new opportunities and lead to expanded markets (LBS). Battery technology competition a major hindrance.
