Tlu-, Indian Standard (Part I) (Second Revrsion) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draftfinahzed hy the Cosmetics Sectional Committee had been approved by the Petroleum, Coal and RelatedProducts Divrsion Council

1 hl~ standard was originally published In 1968. First revision of this standard was carried out In 1988. In thisIC\ tsion only those colours which were III vogue In Indian cosmetic industry and had either EEC (EuropeanFCOn0I111(; Community). USFDA (United States Food & Drug Administration) or any International approvalwere Incorporated

In thr-, rcvrsion, hst of dyes, pigments and colours have been updated III accordance WIth the current El~('

Dn ccuvc 76/76g/~EC~ /\ restricted number of colours currently In vogue in Indian Industry have been takenh 0111 this Dirccuve keeping In rmnd, a wide list of colour would be difficult to moruto•. Moreover, list ofcolounng agents permuted for usc In the cosmetic products has been prepared as per their Colour Index Numberm the ascending older along WIth colour, field of apphcauon and other hrmtations and requirements for use.

<- 'onsidcnng the III effects of SpUrIOUS cosmetics. the Cosmetics Sectional Committee, In the absence ofeffective regulations or vtandards had broadly classified the ingredients for use In cosmetics Into the followingtw 0 catcgortc-,

J) Generally rccogmzcd as safe «(iRAS), and

h) Generally not recognized as safe (CiNRAS)

The <- 'omrruttcc had felt that for dyes, pigments and colours, It would be more covcnicnt and practical to hstthem under ("iRAS l:ld~~ only and for raw matcnals other than dyes, pigments and colours, It would bec onvcrncnt to prepare GNRAS list SInce this hst would adequately safeguard the interest of consumers, leavingenough rOOlTI for development of newer raw material
