    A YEARIN FOCUS

  • JAMES MORRIS Chairman Bord Scannán na hÉireann/ the Irish Film Board

“Because Bord Scannán na hÉireann / Irish Film Board

(BSÉ/IFB) was set up with a dual mandate to develop

both a film industry in Ireland and creative Irish film

making, the importance of the economic benefits of

the industry can overshadow the importance of the

work itself. Irish feature films, feature documentaries

and animated features compete for the relatively

limited screen time available in Irish cinemas with

the best in the world. When given the right exposure

Irish audiences respond very well to Irish films and

increasingly the BSÉ/IFB is engaging with filmmakers

and distributors to support and develop new ways

for Irish films to find their audiences and for Irish

audiences in turn to have access to Irish films.”

I n 2012 four notable Bord Scannán na hÉireann/Irish Film Board (BSÉ/IFB) supported films which exhibited in cinemas and at festivals, specifically spoke to the different aspects of the heart, soul and spirit of Irish culture.

What Richard Did looked into the heart of Ireland‘s young urban middle class with Jack Raynor’s outstanding performance portraying moral anguish and ambiguity. This is the third Lenny Abrahamson film supported by the BSÉ/IFB following on from Adam and Paul and Garage. Pilgrim Hill, Gerard Barrett’s debut film, looked into the soul of the Irish rural landscape and the life of an Irish dairy farmer played by Joe Mullins in a deeply moving performance. Byzantium directed by Neil Jordan brought this author/director back to the horror/vampire genre of his earlier work and saw Saoirse Ronan fill the screen with a performance of soulful beauty and spirited innocence. Silence directed by Pat Collins saw a sound recording artist in search of the spirit of the ultimate sound: silence, and the deep cultural resonances of the stories of the people he met along the way. Of all the creative industries audiovisual production has the most impact on audiences in Ireland and abroad and the films just mentioned show how that impact is brought to light.

For Irish film in 2012, it was also a year of significantly increased audiovisual production activity with Irish film and TV drama expenditure up by 20% on 2011 figures. Feature film production even with the reduced level of BSÉ/IFB funding (18% down from 2011) was steady. BSÉ/IFB provided production funding to 33 projects including 21 feature films, 5 television projects and 7 animation projects. Non BSÉ/IFB local and international finance of €118m was invested in those projects resulting in a funding leverage of €11m investment for every €1m of

BSÉ/IFB funding. Each €11m of Irish expenditure represented roughly 300 full time job equivalents. Film directors supported by BSÉ/IFB in 2012 ranged from first timer Ruairí Robinson with Last Days on Mars to second timer John Michael McDonagh with Calvary. Two films saw directing teams work together. Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor brought us Mister John and Rob and Ronan Burke joined forces on Standby. We had writer/director collaborations on a number of films with Steph Green directing Run and Jump as well as writing it with Ailbhe Keoghan and Mike Cockayne directing The Hardy Bucks Movie in addition to co-writing the project with Gerry Greaney. The year’s production slate is ending with feature comedy The Stag, directed by John Butler who co-wrote the screenplay with actor Peter McDonald. All these films will be seen in cinemas across Ireland and internationally 2013.

BSÉ/IFB supported films shot in various counties across Ireland including Wexford (The Sea), Kerry (Run and Jump and Pilgrim Hill), Sligo (Calvary), Leitrim (Black Ice), Belfast (The Good Man), Wicklow (The Stag), and the streets of Dublin (The Food Guide to Love). International locations included Jordan (Last Days on Mars), Singapore (Mister John) and South Africa (The Good Man). This year also saw BSÉ/IFB projects involved in co-production with a variety of countries including the UK (Last Days on Mars), France (Dark Touch), Germany (Run and Jump), Italy (Controra), Spain ( The Food Guide to Love), Singapore (Mister John), Luxemburg (Standby) and Canada (Stay and The F Word).

As important, 2012 was also a record year for cinema releases in Ireland with 19 films supported by BSÉ/IFB released in cinemas across the country. BSÉ/IFB will continue to support cinema distribution of Irish film in Ireland. The cinema posters for each of these films can be found at the back of this catalogue.

2012 saw international film festivals continuing to provide a global platform to showcase the quality and diversity of Irish filmmaking. Three Irish feature films screened at the Sundance Film Festival in Colorado (Grabbers, Shadow Dancer and This Must Be The Place); two feature films and three feature documentaries at the Berlin Film Festival (Dollhouse, Shadow Dancer, The Reluctant Revolutionary, Anton Corbijn: Inside Out); four feature films and three feature documentaries in Toronto (Jump, Byzantium, Call Girl, What Richard Did, Men at Lunch, Perverts Guide to Ideology and Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence In The House of God) and seven feature films and three feature documentaries at the BFI London Film Festival. The year is ending with the news that feature documentary The Summit and short film Irish Folk Furniture have both been selected to screen at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival in January 2013. These screenings and selections in addition to the Irish film festivals held in cities throughout the world from London, New York, Boston, LA and Toronto to Moscow and Singapore shows the interest in Irish filmmaking talent remains strong.

New talent ranging from director Gerard Barrett (Pilgrim Hill) to writer Kevin Lehane (Grabbers) to actor Jack Reynor (What Richard Did) all debuted in 2012 with films supported by BSÉ/IFB and are going from strength to strength. Academy Award ® nominated Steph Green and Ruairí Robinson directed their first features in 2012.

The Irish animation industry was also in the spotlight in 2012 with the world famous Annecy International Animation Festival paying a special and well deserved tribute to Ireland with a host of screenings and events. Animation Ireland worked very hard this year to ensure that the Cartoon Finance conference took place in Dublin. This important event saw animation professionals from across Europe gathering to

discuss new ways of funding animation series, whilst emphasizing new business and revenue opportunities. The highly successful event shone a spotlight on the business and co-production opportunities available in Ireland. The highly coveted Children’s BAFTA Awards recognised two very talented animation companies picking up awards with JAM Media winning for the television series Roy and Boulder Media picking up an award for The Amazing World of Gumball.

The year 2013 will present new challenges and also new opportunities. BSÉ/IFB funding is likely to be further reduced in 2013. Changes and improvements are proposed for our tax incentive (Section 481) arising out of a Department of Finance Consultation launched in May 2012. There are reviews of the BAI Sound and Vision Fund II as well as a new proposed five year plan for the public service broadcaster RTÉ. Work is still being undertaken on the implementation of the Creative Capital Report which was published in July 2011 and which focused on the expansion and development of the audiovisual production sector with a doubling of turnover from €500m to €1 billion annually and a doubling of jobs numbers from over 5,000 to over 10,000 full time equivalents all by the end of 2016.

Yet we still have as many if not more applications for funding and a vibrant community of talented writers and directors and producers as well as cast and crew all of whom want to see their creativity up on the cinema screen as well as earning a livelihood. BSÉ/IFB remains committed to supporting and enabling this talent to flourish to the fullest extent possible.

    ALL IS BY MY SIDE

A ll is By My Side is based on the true events surrounding the year from 1966 to 1967 that Jimmy James Marshall arrived to England and returned to America as Jimi Hendrix. It is also the story of an amazing young woman named Linda Keith who literally plucked Jimi from obscurity and inspired him to play his music his way. Though the two would not remain together, the deep and true affection they shared, stayed with them for the remainder of Jimi’s too-short life. Their love is immortalized in the awe inspiring, yet over-looked Hendrix track titled Sending My Love To Linda. Rather than another telling of the downward spiral of a rock icon, this is the detailing of how a love supreme changed music history. THE RUNNER

T he Runner is a film about endurance. It is an exploration of what drives us to take risks, and make sacrifices, for a cause that is virtually unknown. It is a film about the burden of being a hero told through the story of champion long-distance runner Salah Ameidan whose journey has transformed him from an athlete into the symbol of a national liberation movement. Salah runs for a country that doesn’t exist; he is from Western Sahara – officially Africa’s last colony and under Moroccan occupation since 1975.

THE STRANGER N eal MacGregor, an English artist, died alone on a remote Irish island in 1990, living his final years in a 10 x 5 ft stone hovel. He lived on the fish he caught, or rabbits that he trapped. When he died suddenly, unexpectedly in his hovel, he left behind rock carvings and years of secret diaries, illustrations and paintings. Some locals had thought he was a spy recording the IRA gun-running shipping routes, or that he was trying to take over their rapidly depopulating island, or that he was just mad, living on the edge, physically and mentally. What is clear is that they knew very little about this unusual man. So who exactly was The Stranger? The film paints a fascinating portrait of a man, living on the periphery of society, and the Irish-speaking community he lived amongst.

    THE SWANSONG OF ELIZA LYNCH

T his feature length documentary tells the epic and ultimately tragic life of Irishwoman Eliza Lynch, the uncrowned Queen of Paraguay. This is a love story of a doomed and obsessive affair between the beautiful, sophisticated, imperious Eliza, National Heroine of Paraguay and the dictator of Paraguay Francisco Solano Lopez.

Eliza’s life story is one of the most intriguing, infamous and outside of South America, one of the least known in modern history. It is a truly epic story of hunger, war and wealth, of family and love, of desolation and loss, and, ultimately, of loneliness and death.

Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board (IFB) aims to invest in new talent by providing opportunities for filmmakers to develop skills in live action filmmaking, documentary, animation and digital technology.

To this end the IFB provides funding for short films through a series of schemes all of which welcome and actively encourage Irish language entries.

SIGNATURESSignatures is the IFB flagship short film scheme. It showcases live action short filmmaking, encouraging strong, original storytelling, visual flair and production values appropriate to the big screen. These short films act as a catalyst for Irish creative talents aspiring to write, direct and produce feature-length films for the cinema.

REALITY BITESReality Bites is a short documentary scheme which encourages the experimentation and realisation of fresh approaches to non-fiction filmmaking, whether the documentary is journalistic or creative, observational or aesthetic, objective or personal.

FRAMEWORKSFrameworks is a short animation scheme which aims to encourage filmmakers with imagination, visual flair and commitment to innovative animation. It is also open to established animators who may wish to realize more personal and creative projects.

SHORT SHORTS Short Shorts aims to produce ultra short pieces which can be used to promote Irish filmmaking with the high impact power of advertisements, but without a product to sell. The short films each year in this scheme conform to a genre chosen for that year by the IFB. The films featured in this year’s catalogue followed the theme of Food.

GEARRSCANNÁIN Gearrscannáin aims to produce Irish language short films that encourage new directorial voices willing to take risks, challenge audiences and introduce interesting themes while at the same time appeal to a general audience.

Tá sé mar aidhm ag Gearrscannáin gearrscannáin Gaeilge a sholáthar, a spreagfaidh stiúrthóirí nua atá sásta chun dul sa seans, a thabharfaidh téamaí suimiúla nua chun cinn, chomh maith le bheith tarraingteach don lucht féachana ginearálta. SHORT
