Irish Crochet Flower Spray by Ann Reillet, 2017

Material:

• Perle Cotton No. 8 and/or Crochet Thread Size 20 • Steel Crochet Hook size 1.25mm (Boye #10 or Clover No. 4) • Aluminum Crochet Hook size 6.50mm (US "K") • Scissors and Needle (for weaving in tail)

Step 1:

To begin, cut two (2) wing spans of thread. Fold in half, then fold in half again. Note that one end is solid and the other contains the two (2) cut ends. Set aside for now. We'll use it in Rnd 2 of the pattern.

Step 2:

Wrap thread 12 times around the handle or base of the 6.50mm hook. Slide off. Insert the 1.25mm hook through the center. Pull up a thread, y/o, draw through all loops on the hook to secure.

Flower Pattern:

Rnd 1: 16 sc in ring, join with sl st to 1st sc

Rnd 2: pick up the padding thread from Step 1, sc over the 2-strand solid end to secure, 6 sc over all 4-strands, drop padding, sk 1 sc, sl st in next, *pick up padding thread, 7 sc over all 4-strands of padding, drop padding, sk 1, sl st in next, *repeat around for 8 total loops, ending with drop padding, sl st in beg sl st

Rnd 3: sl st to center, *ch 5, sl st in next center st, *repeat around ending with sl st in beg st

Rnd 4: ch 1, pick up padding, 9 hdc in 1st ch5sp, drop padding, ch 6, turn, sk 8, sl st in last, ch 1, turn, 6 dc in ch6sp, picot (ch3, sl st in top of dc), 5 dc in same ch6sp, *pick up padding, 9 hdc in ch5sp, drop padding, ch 6, turn, sl st in prev ch6sp, ch 1, turn, 6 dc in newly made ch6sp, picot, 5 dc in same ch6sp, *repeat around, ending with a ch 1, cut excess padding, sl st in 1st hdc. End. Break Thread. Weave in Tail. Note: If there's enough leftover, use excess padding to create a stem for the flower by just folding it in half one time so there is one solid end.

Optional Layering (2nd Flower)

Here (in the 2nd photo) I've layered the Round Flower from my Crochet Bib Necklace Pattern over the center and added a pearl to create fullness and texture.

• ch 5, join with sl st in 1st ch to form ring, • ch 1, sc in ring, *ch 3, sc in ring *repeat for 8 loops, ending with sl st in beg sc • sl st in ch3sp, ch 3, 4 dc, popcorn the 5 sts, *ch 2, 5 dc popcorn in next ch3sp, *repeat around

(=8 popcorns), join with ch 2 and sl st in top of beg popcorn • *sl st in ch2sp, ch3-4dc-ch3-slst, ch 1, *repeat around (=8 petals), join with sl st in beg st and

end. Break Thread. Weave in tail.

Leaf Pattern:

• ch 8, sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next, dc in each of the next three, hdc in next, sc in last • ch 3, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of the next two, hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sc, sl st across • around the perimeter: ch 1, sc, ch 1, sc, etc... at end, ch 1, cross under and resume with eight sc

to end, sl st across, resume the sc, ch 1 along this side. At very end, ch 3, end. Break Thread Long. Use long end to sew/attach to other leaves or to stem.

Bud Pattern:

This is just a free form layering. The bottom is basically the leaf pattern herein, except that the end is forked. The top is more of a triangle and slanted across the "leaf", the two pieces sewn together, then at the bottom, a popcorn is made.

Stem Pattern:

Crochet a chain the desired length i.e. 50, insert hook in 2nd ch from hook, loop solid end of padding over the hook, pull up a thread, y/o, sc to secure. sc in next ch and over all strands of padding for remainder of stem, at end, cut excess padding, add 2 extra sc in last ch, End. Break thread long, use long end to sew to flower.
