1. The earliest known beads, made of teeth and shells, were found in the cave in France 38,000 years ago.


2. Early manufactured beads were created using simple, readily available materials: bone, teeth, ivory, stones, seeds, wood and a varietyof plant and insect resin.


3. First beads were worn as talismans to protect against forces of nature.


4. Historically men enjoyed adorning themselves with jewelry as much and sometimes even more than women.


5. Before development of the process of cultivation, pearls were more valuable than diamonds. In 1917 Cartier bought the six-story mansion on Fifth Avenue, New York for $100 plus a double strand of pearls.
