Global Atlas Medium Term Strategy Workshop

14.00 – 17.00 Capital Suite 16

The purpose of this workshop is to gather information and ideas from stakeholders that can feed into IRENA’s development of the medium-term strategy for the Global Atlas. Workshop participants will engage in a practical discussion around how the Global Atlas can help overcome barriers to renewable energy development, generate ideas for more effective communication on the Global Atlas, and discuss the needs and ideas of data providers.

Post-launch Meeting of the Global Geothermal Alliance

17.00 – 19.30 Capital Suite 14

The meeting, which is the first gathering after the official launch of the initiative, aims at collecting views on the priority areas of action. The meeting aims at developing streamlined communication and coordination between members of the Alliance and stakeholders, and at creating synergies between the regional components and other geothermal programmes. The discussions will focus on how to operationalise the principles set out in the GGA Joint Communique adopted by Members and Partners at COP21 in Paris.

Catalysing Private Sector Participation in Renewable Energy-based Mini-grid Development

9.00 – 11.00 Capital Suite 14

Renewable energy-based mini-grids will be key to achieve universal access to modern energy by 2030, one of the recently adopted Sustainable Development Goals. The private sector will play an important role in meeting this objective, given its ability to tap into a larger pool of private financing and to formulate innovative approaches to designing, deploying and maintaining mini-grid systems. The meeting will convene key stakeholders to discuss actions needed to facilitate private sector involvement in the mini-grid sector, building on the findings from IRENA’s analysis on mini-grid policy and technology aspects. The Annual Report of the SE4ALL Clean Energy Mini-Grid High Impact Opportunity will also be presented during the meeting.

Enabling Environments for Clean Energy Investments

9.30 – 12.30 Capital Suite 15

This joint IRENA / Energy Charter workshop presents the advisory and technical support activities of these two institutions aimed at strengthening domestic legal and regulatory frameworks for clean energy investments. A roundtable discussion will bring together international financial institutions, the private sector and governments to discuss experiences and views on the importance of good governance practices to overcome barriers to clean energy investment.

Financing renewable energy projects in developing countries: Sustainable Energy Marketplace

11.30 – 13.30 Capital Suite 14

The meeting will present the newly launched IRENA Sustainable Energy Marketplace and the IRENA/ADFD Project Facility, and discuss how collaboration

with other organizations can increase public and private investment into renewable energy in developing countries. Project proponents, expert project evaluators, ADFD and other funds will be engaged in discussions on their participation in the IRENA/ADFD Project Facility and the new Marketplace.

Transforming the Transport Sector: IRENA Technology Outlook for Advanced Liquid Biofuels

16.00 – 17.30 Capital Suite 14

At this meeting, participants will discuss how to effectively support advanced biofuels for a transition towards a sustainable energy system in the transportation sector. During the meeting, the preliminary results of IRENA’s ‘Innovation Technology Outlook for Advanced Liquid Biofuels’ will be presented together with a comparative assesssment and innovation prospects of advanced biofuel production pathways and strategies in the next thirty years. This meeting will connect policy makers, research insitutions and producers.

Renewable Energy Market Analysis: The GCC region

9.00 – 11.00 Capital Suite 14

The ‘Renewable Energy Market Analysis: The GCC Region’ report provides in-depth insights on the best practices in innovative policy making, project development and financing that are driving the transition towards more sustainable energy systems in the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council. This meeting is held in collaboration with the Middle East Solar Industry Association (MESIA).

Sustainable Bioenergy to Support a Doubling of Renewables

9.30 – 11.30 Capital Suite 15

IRENA analysis indicates that a least-cost path to doubling the share of renewable energy could require a four-fold increase in modern bioenergy for power, heating, and liquid transport fuels. Such a scale-up could come through a mix of options such as collecting more food crop residues, reducing waste in the food chain to free up farmland for bioenergy crops, raising livestock efficiently to free up pastureland, encouraging afforestation of degraded land, and cultivating algae. The workshop will present initial findings on these options and discuss practical policies and measures to unlock a portion of this potential.

Socio-Economic Benefits of Renewable Energy

14.00 – 18.30 Capital Suite 15

In an effort to bridge the existing knowledge gap on the socio-economic benefits of renewable energy, IRENA is partnering with GIZ and the Regional Centre of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE) to present and discuss the results of the various assessments that have been conducted in this respect. Furthermore, this session will revisit the approaches and trajectories which front-running countries have followed, and explore the policies and conditions needed to maximise the multiple renewable energy benefits for local populations.

19 January 2016 Solar Resource Assessment for Policymakers

10.00 – 16.00 IRENA HQ, Masdar City

Solar resource assessment portals, including the Solar-Med-Atlas and the IRENA Global Atlas, have been developed to ease access to solar resource data, and to improve policy planning and implementation of solar energy systems. This session will provide an introduction to the capabilities of such tools and how they may be used to improve the design of policies for solar energy. Participants should bring laptops to participate in the hands-on exercises.

19 January 2016 Valuing Energy Storage for Off-grid Renewable Energy Systems

11.30 – 13.00 Capital Suite 18

The workshop is part of the SIDS Lighthouse Initiative and the first follow-up meeting after the release of IRENA’s global technology roadmap ‘Renewables and Electricity Storage’, and addresses the question “How to assess the value streams of storage in off-grid renewable energy systems in islands and remote areas?”. The meeting is organised in collaboration with the Government of France, and the aim is to allow stakeholders to discuss the topic.

19 January 2016 Renewables, Climate, Natural Gas and the MENA Energy Transition – What's new for 2016?

14.30 – 16.30 Capital Suite TBC

Together with Masdar, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates, REN21 and the International Energy Agency, IRENA will join the discussion on renewables and their relevance to the MENA region. This session will also look into new perspectives for renewables and gas in the MENA energy mix. Participants will share the latest updates on developments relevant to the MENA region.

20 January 2016 Habitat III Thematic Meeting on Sustainable Energy and Cities

09.30 – 17.30 Capital Suite 7

The Habitat III Thematic Meeting on Sustainable Energy and Cities, hosted by the United Arab Emirates, Habitat and IRENA, will provide the official input on sustainable energy for Habitat III, the UN Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Quito, October 2016) that will set the international agenda on development in cities for the coming decades. The Thematic Meeting will bring together Ministers, government officials and a broad range of stakeholders to debate and prioritize technology, policy, and financing interventions and mechanisms to accelerate uptake of sustainable energy in cities. Topics will include 100% renewable cities, distributed generation, waste-to-energy, biofuels, building and appliance codes, and others. An outcome document will identify new actions and commitments for the endorsement of stakeholders and constitute an official input into the declaration and programming of Habitat III.
