The program, which began in July of 2013, identifies and addresses the drivers of poppy cultivation in seven targeted districts of Kandahar Province, Afghanistan (Arghistan, Maiwand, Panjawi, Takhta Pul, Shawali Kot, Zharai and Kandahar City). The work includes improving community infrastructure, strengthening livelihoods, and supporting small businesses. KFZ also builds the capacity of the Ministry of Counter Narcotics to provide alternative livelihoods. Roger Ervin, President and CEO of IRD emphasized the strong performance of the IRD team in Afghanistan, led by Country Director Ligia Carvajal, and the effective partnership with USAID in implementing the program. “We are extremely proud of the dramatic impact we are having through KFZ at the local level directly empowering farmers and small businesses.
