RANSOM HATCHCompiled and written by Nina F. Moss

About the time the Massachusetts Bay Project had been developed in England,

several members of the Hache (Hatch) family had determined to cast their lot in the new

world. They realized that much must be sacrificed in order to accomplish this move, but

were yet to learn how great these trials were to be in doing their part in establishing

themselves in America.

The branch of the family in which were particularly interested for this historical

sketch is that of Thomas, who with his wife Grace, were registered at Dorchester,

Massachusetts in 1634. In 1641 he received an allotment ofland at Barnstable,

Massachusetts where he lived until his death in 1661. Few of us realize the tremendous

influx of immigrants who filled the existing towns to overflowing at this time. They were

generally given permission to rest a few days in the vicinity of Boston after their

exhausting sea voyage, but were then notified to find a new location. It was then that

they contracted for "a preacher," who sometimes also served as a schoolmaster, a

carpenter, to build their homes, a blacksmith, a tanner, etc., along with someone to form

their laws and survey their lands and then the group set out for the frontier to establish

new communities. Consequently we find one Benjamin Hache (a grandson of Thomas) a

cordwainer (shoemaker) residing at Falmouth, Massachusetts with his family. The record

states that most of his family moved to Connecticut and other parts after 1721.~}

Among Benjamin's children was one son, Maletiah, whose birth is recorded as 24

October, 1693 at Falmouth, Massachusetts. On 1 March 1715 this Maletiah married

Johanna Wills of Boston. Early Hatch family records give no account of his family, but

state that he was "lost at sea". For many years, members of the Hatch Genealogical

Committee of Utah, searched in vain for the antecedent of their father, Ira Steams Hatch,

but found no connection with any of the immigrant families. 01'0[:.' recently did they

At that time there had been no established line for the Northern limits of

Massachusetts. It was with alarm and resentment that some of the inhabitants of the

Northfield found themselves belonging to the State of New Hampshire when the line was

eventually surveyed. And thus it was that the family ofMaletiah and Johanna are

registered at Winchester, Cheshire County, New Hampshire.

At this time there were no roads from Concord, New Hampshire the capital city,

and New Hampshire was not prepared to defend or care for her newly assigned

settlements on the southern line. Consequently these inhabitants were left to their own

devices to protect themselves from the Indians and make peace with their neighbors.

Having such responsibilities placed on their shoulders they became rough but ready men.

Among the children of Maletiah was a son Jeremiah who grew to manhood at

Winchester, evidently without much influence from his father who had gone to sea and

did not return. We learn from reading the history of Winchester that Jeremiah was

interested in religion since he was among the residents of the vicinity who signed a

petition for the removal of their local pastor because he was unsatisfactory. Jeremiah's

wife was Mary Stearns. Numbered among their children born in Winchester was one

"Ira".

It was a day of rejoicing for the land agents when fvIassachusctts::sTab1is~ed her

section of what is now New York State was opened for co ionization. Here in the

beautiful Genesee Valley, a few whites had been brave enough to venture for a

homestead but the roads were mere trails and they had little contact with the other

settlements. By 1802, the whole of the section was opened to settlers. Road contracts

were let, permits "vere now granted for inns along the way. Farmers who had eked out an

existence in Vermont and >.ie\vHampshire and rile crowded sections ofeastern New York:

removed to this fertile valley where land sold for a trifle.

It was in the year 1799 that Ira Hatch, son of Jeremiah and Mary Stearns, married

Lucinda Rice. About 1809, Ira and Lucinda left Winchester, New Hampshire and moved

their family to Farmersville, Catteragus County, New York. Here among the Indians,

Iroquois, Seneca's Oneidas, Ononaga's and Mohawks they established a home. The Five

Nations were noted as great conquerors but also for the kindness they exhibited to those

whom they conquered. Great strides were made by Elliott toward converting them to

Christianity.

Captain Israel Chapin was appointed Superintendent ofIndian affairs in this new

project. Among the sachems gathered for the sale of land \-'iUS one Seneca Chief known

as "Farmers Brother:. It was for him that the settlement of Farmersville was named.

Catteragus County was originally included in the great Genesee C:Cl.lT1~V ":u: as the

baptisms occurred. It was here amongst the Indians \\/110 still held their great councils

near by, that Ira Steams Hatch, son ofIra and Lucinda Rice Hatch and progenitor of the

branch of the Hatch family, grew to manhood. He had been born in Winchester, New

Hampshire but had been brought to Farmersville by his parents. On 25 January 1825, Ira

Steams Hatch married Weltha Bradford. They resided at or close to his father, Ira

Hatch's homestead and reared their family namely Maletiah, born 1:5 July 1825; Ransom,

Ephraim, 30 November l837; and Ancel, 18 June 1840.

Weltha Bradford Hatch was ever mindful of her heritage and of the

responsibilities which fell to her to maintain the purpose of her life. She was a daughter

of Simeon and Martha True Bradford and was born in November 1803, at Turner, Oxford

County, Maine. Her father was a former resident of Kingston, Massachusetts. and was a

descendant of Governor William Bradford. Time will not permit relating the history of
