3rd Annual IPSSA & APSP Crawfish Boil

IPSSA and APSP once again have played host for our third annual crawfish boil located at Smith Ranch in Katy, Texas. This year a

more family-oriented venue was selected which drew rave reviews from our 500+ members and guests in attendance! Tousled into 40

acres of plush greenery Smith Ranch is filled with exciting site amenities such as a small lake with paddle boats, fishing, train rides,

petting zoos, and inflatable bounce houses and obstacle courses for the children. While the children play the adults can dance the

night away to the music styling's of our wonderful DJ, enjoy a beer, participate in our crawfish eating contest, or sit back and relax

while soaking in the ambiance of the country lifestyle and mingling with fellow guests and sponsors.

The event was highlighted by our fundraising event as a winning ticket from our yearly drawing was selected for our winner Oscar

Melendez who won a brand new 2018 pickup truck from Classic Chevrolet in Sugar Land. For our secondary drawing we had three

opportunities to win. One chance to win a $1000 gift card to Athena Gun Club won by Ben Nabors and Two opportunities to win a

$500 Visa gift card won by Daniel Bennett and Larry Krenek. Congratulations to the winners! A big thank you to The Speedy Cookers

cooking team, consisting of Chris Gonzalez and his team of fellow first responders, for volunteering their time to cook the crawfish that

everybody got to enjoy! We are happy to say that this years Crawfish Boil was a success and we are already looking forward to many

As a professional trade organization Ipssa is making change in the world. We have brought a sense of community to the pool industry. Ipssa has founded or helped start trade shows to educate people in the pool business. This year we spear headed the forma-tion of a foundation for those who suf-fered loss in a natural disaster. Ipssa has the best insurance available at a very good price. I would say we are the change!!

HORROR FILE OF THE MONTH

“What were they Thinking?” We have all run into those situations that are just so outrageous, funny or just plain stupid that they warrant

a photo - it doesn’t just have to do with all the “creative” plumbing or equipment layouts we have seen. If you have a contribut ion of in-

terest just let me know at: Ingrid - [email protected]

San Antonio’s Jorge Martinez submitted this. Apparently a “company”

came out to replace a DE with a cartridge and they decided they had an

abundance of flex they needed to use. Jorge tells me the filter bounces,

and the customer does not want it fixed, because it works “fine”.

Builders are always less expensive

If y’all remember correctly I mentioned awhile back about

the three (3) groups within our industry that present us with

what seems an endless stream of challenges, at times en-

tertaining situations and at all times a never ending income

stream. Those three (3) groups are; inexperienced techni-

cians, insurance providers, and builders. This installment of

“Talking Story” involves two (2) of the three (3).

We received a work order from an insurance company that

stated the homeowner’s filter was not working correctly and

was leaking. In the initial conversation with the homeowner

we were informed that about two (2) years ago. The insur-

ance company had a builder replace their old filter with a

cartridge filter. It worked great at first but over time the wa-

ter clarity just seemed to get worse and now it was leaking

from around the middle.

Upon arriving at the pool we verified that yes the water clar-

ity was not what it should be and there was a slight leak at

TALKING STORY

the band clamp. Further more filter pressure was very high and

my initial diagnosis based on all of the above. Was that the filter

cartridges had not been serviced in quite a while. Time to verify

my diagnosis. When I removed the filter top. Surprise! Surprise!

Surprise! Followed by a What The Heck!! YEP!! DE grids so im-

pacted that they looked like fat sausages ready to bust at the

seams?? Wait a minute, what did I miss. Taking a step back yep

no filter valve, no backwash line. Where is the filter label? Ahhh

sure enough the label verified that it was in fact a 48 SQ FT DE

filter. Well something new for the books.

Of course the insurance companies first response “Can you fix it”.

Almost had me rolling on the ground. AHHH yea!! BUT it is going

to cost more then installing a new cartridge filter. When I ques-

tioned their decision of having a builder repair and or replace pool

equipment, their answer was priceless. Ohhh, builders are al-

ways less expensive then service companies. Yeah well you got

me there, they sure can be.

THAT IS ALL!!!

THE WEST HOUSTON CHAPTER IS REMODELING

A SWIMMING POOL FOR A FLOOD VICTIM IN NEED

Corky has lived in her home in the Concord Bridge neighborhood of West Houston

for 18 years. Her time there has been filled with catching up with neighbors at the

local grocery store, volunteering for rescue groups, and serving others anytime an

opportunity arose. In speaking with her, she reminisced about watching the media

coverage as Harvey began to impose himself on Houston. Her heart ached as she

remembered the tears she dried as she volunteered and served those displaced

from Katrina a few years ago. She couldn't believe what she was seeing on the

news and what was happening here. When the reservoir was opened the water

moved quickly. Before she knew it, the National Guard was at her door, water was

up to her knees, and she was placed in a rescue boat with nothing but the pajamas

she was wearing. She was taken to the Berry Center where she found herself on

the receiving end of things. "It was the first time in my life that I couldn't take care of

myself. It was in that moment that I realized what those tears I dried many years

ago held." Corky shared.

Water filled her home for 9 days. Nothing was salvageable. Teams of community

volunteers came and helped her muck out what the flood had left behind. They

removed all the contents of her home, but her backyard pool remained full of con-

taminated water, snakes, and even fish. Corky said, "I have always prided myself

on taking good care of my pool. The water always sparkled. But after Harvey, my

pool was a "clear" reflection of my life. It reflected all that had come into my house.

That dirty, nasty water had put me in this place. Looking at that everyday was

hard." For 7 months Corky was displaced from her home. Once some funds be-

came available she had the

pool drained and cleaned, but

the damage sustained from

the force of the water and

duration of the stagnant, con-

taminated water has left her

pool and equipment in dire need of repair. "I have little buckets

for everything left that is needed to do. I just add a little bit to

each bucket as I can. My system is working...this week I got a

bed. It is so much nicer than a pallet on the floor." she shared.

The West Houston IPSAA chapter feels like Harvey has offered

an opportunity for its members to be actively engaged in giving

back to our community. Our chapter hopes to bless Corky by

remodeling her pool and replacing her equipment free of

charge. Many are responding to the call. Suppliers are donat-

ing goods and pool companies are donating labor to cover the

costs of this project. Some items remain, and we would appre-

ciate if your company would consider making a contribution.

As the project unfolds, we will use so-

cial media, local and IPSAA publica-

tions to promote your company and

thank you for your contribution.
