P a g e 1 Social media platforms are a pervasive part of the way we live our lives and for those of us old enough to remember, it is now becoming increasingly difficult to think about what life was like B.F. (before Facebook). How did we share the details of the most important events in our lives with family and friends? How did we provide our views on the events occurring as part of our lives? How did we tell one another about the delicious meals we’d just eaten at the local restaurant…did we even do that? It is incredible to think this technological force, that has completely changed the way we interact with our world and has spawned the development of a language previously unimaginable, has actually only been around for a comparatively short period of time. ‘The Facebookas it was originally known, first made an appearance in 2004 but did not reach the world in its entirety until 2006, the same year the world learned to share using only 140 characters on Twitter. In between these years, in 2005, the first YouTube video was uploaded. Instagram first unleashed its photo sharing platform in 2010 and the teenagers’ network of choice, Snapchat, began delivering the minutia of life in 2012. It is interesting then to consider that in 2018, rarely a day goes by when we don’t hear about the negative effects of social media on our children; our children with their still developing awareness of self and others, our children with their still developing understanding of time and place. It is clear we are all still grappling with how to harness the positive aspects of social media – its power to develop and maintain connections with others – and avoid the dark side, the side that is leading to distorted self-image, cyberbullying, the commercialisation of happiness, sleep deprivation, the list goes on. As parents we are our childrenrsquos first teachers The most powerful life lessons that children will ever learn come from their parents As role models parents must reflect upon what messages they are sending their own children about the use of technology social media and its place in life Consider the following

Are you guilty of technoference This is a new term coined to describe the situation when your interpersonal interactions are interrupted by technology Would you interrupt a conversation you may be having with your teenager to respond to the lsquopingrsquo of an incoming post What message is this sending

Do you sleep with a phone close to your bed What message does this send to your child Perhaps that you cannot be without your device even during the hours when you should be resting

Do the posts of others make you anxious or angry ndash do you make considered responses in these situations or do you react in the spur of the moment Are you always respectful in your comments and posts

How much time do you spend scrolling through posts or perhaps watching videos on YouTube Observational research indicates that 35 of parents spend 1 minute (or more) in every 5 looking down at their device while their young children are playing at the playground What message does this send

The schools role in educating children to successfully navigate the world of technology and social media is vital but role modelling by parents plays a significant part in helping them to learn balance and moderation ndash elements vital as they develop the understanding and skills they will need to successfully find their place in the world Karen Roman Assistant Principal Junior School
