A REPORT ON THE KROMAD* FORMULA-HOW EACH INGREDIENT HELPSTURF STAY HEALTHY

No.3 in a series of reports on anew approach to turf diseasecontrol with KROMAD-thebroad-spectrum fungicide devel-oped by Mallinckrodt.

This article will give you the "inside story"of KROMAD and present many facts aboutthis new broad-spectrum fungicide thathave never been published before. We want to discuss each active ingredientin KROMAD and show how it helps keepyour turf healthy. You will then have abetter understanding of just how this broad-spectrum fungicide controls more turf dis-eases than any other fungicide availabletoday. You will also be better informed onhow to use KROMAD advantageously. It is important for you to remember thatKROMAD is the result of an extensiveresearch and testing program. A great dealof experimentation was required to deter-mine the ingredients and exact proportionsof each that should go into the product. The action of these individual ingredientsand the action of the right combinationof them is the secret of KROMAD'seffectiveness.Cadmium Compound-Cadmium is ex-tremely effective and economical for controlof such turf diseases as dollar spot, copperspot and pink patch. This cadmium com-pound controls disease and does not dam-age turf.Potassium Chromate-Tests in 1953witha Mallinckrodt experimental fungicide re-vealed that potassium chromate is verysuccessful against leaf spot diseases such asCurvularia and Helminthosporium. Addingthis ingredient to KROMAD makes iteffective against these diseases.Malachite Green-Malachite Green is ef-fective against brown patch. In KROMAD,Malachite Green is combined with otherelements also effective against brown patch, and the combination provides positive andlong-lasting control. Further research indi-cates that Malachite Green may controlpythium too.

May, 1956

Auramine-Auramine is one of the ingre-dients which act against brown patch andCurvularia.

Thiram -Continued research indicates thatThiram may be absorbed by the leaf blade. In combination with the other ingredientsof KROMAD it contributes some degree ofprotection against a number of fungi thatattack turf grass.

Urea and Ferrous Sulfate (Iron)-Theseingredients in KROMAD are valuable aidsto turf culture. By stimulating healthygrowth, they make grasses more resistantto disease.

Renex - Better, longer lasting protectionis assured when a contact fungicide such asKROMAD completely covers the leaf area.Renex, a wetting agent, is used in KROMADto insure good coverage.

There you have it-eight important ingre-dients-each one contributing to the pro-tection and health of your greens. That'swhy KROMAD controls more turf diseasesthan any other fungicide on the market!

SMALL DOSAGE-LOW COSTSOn a preventive schedule: Two ounces ofKROMAD per 1,000 sq. ft. every five toseven days will control the major turf dis-eases during normal weather. During ex-tended periods ofhigh temperature and highhumidity, larger quantities of KROMADmay be used to achieve increased control. It has been applied at four times the recom-mended rate with no visible damage tofine turf.

On a curative schedule: Experience hasshown that if a green is badly infested, outstanding control is achieved by apply-ing KROMAD on three successive days. After this series of treatments, the golfcourse superintendent can determine byobservation when the next dose is needed.

Consult your Mallinckrodt turf fungicidedistributor. He will be glad to help youplan a KROMAD turf disease preventionprogram.

Kanawaki is a much used, popular private golfclub in Montreal, Canada. The turf on greens, tees, and fairways is excellent always - thanksto the know-how of Jimmie Patterson.

In the early days Patterson was the Professionalonly. Then he was asked to d,irect course main-tenance in addition. Now he devotes all his timeto maintenance. In addition, Patterson is gen-erous enough to lend a helping hand to otherclubs in Quebec Province.

Kanawaki started to use Milorganite before1930. They have been a consistent carload userever since - for more than two decades.
