MONTHLY REPORT – JANUARY 2020

From the Desk of Chief Investment Officer… OVERVIEW OF MARKET Nifty fell 1.7% in line with major global markets due to escalating tension between US

and Iran and rising concerns over fast spreading corona virus. Among the sectors IT,

FMCG and Pharma outperformed while Metals, Energy and Auto underperformed the

Nifty during the month. FIIs were net buyers to the tune of about Rs 97bn, while

domestic mutual funds sold Rs 29bn of equity during the month.

IIP reported a growth of 1.8% in November compared to a degrowth of 3.8% in

October. CPI inflation rose sharply to 7.4% in December against 5.5% in November.

WPI inflation moved up to 2.6% in December as against 0.6% in November.

Bond yields rose marginally during the month of January’20. The 10 year benchmark

G-Sec (6.45% GOI 2029) closed 4 bps higher at 6.60% against 6.56% last month.

UNION BUDGET FY 2020-21

Amid slower economic growth, low level of employment and relatively stable macro,

the Budget focused on economic growth and liberalised fiscal discipline within

acceptable limits. Due weightage has been provided to agriculture, rural development,

wellness, education and other social and welfare measures. Other thrust areas are

revival of capex cycle, particularly in infrastructure, start ups and manufacturing

sectors.

Keeping in mind the needs of individuals, the government proposed an optional

simplified income tax structure without any exemptions.

FUND PERFORMANCE

For 3 years period ending January 2020, majority of Equity and Growth funds

delivered annualised returns of around 9-11%. Majority of Balanced and Bond funds

delivered about 5-8% for the said period. Fund wise performance is detailed in the

following sheets.

FIXED INCOME MARKET OUTLOOK

Inspite of uptick in headline inflation, RBI’s recent action aimed at lowering overall

interest rate in the economy through better transmission remained favourable for the

market sentiment. Moreover, fall in global fixed income yield and correction in the

equity market and crude price also supported the market. However, lower revenue

collection owing to slower economic activity was cause of concern for the market.

Market was looking towards Union Budget announcement for clarity with respect to

any additional borrowing. Though absence of incremental borrowing is favourable for

the market in the near term, medium term outlook is contingent upon crude price

movement, central bank action and FPI flows.

EQUITY MARKET OUTLOOK

The new regime on personal income tax is likely to put more cash in the hands of

certain taxpayers, thereby marginally boosting consumption. Apart from consumption, a

recovery in overall capital formation cycle would benefit from lower interest rates,

higher corporate profitability and continued government infrastructure spending.

Corporate earnings so far were largely in line with estimates and growth pick up is

contingent on implementation of reforms, transmission of cumulative interest rate cuts

and global growth scenario. In this backdrop, stocks with strong business models within

the retail banking and consumption space offer a good means to build a core portfolio.
