Introduction

Peak Hosted Advanced Applications

2

• What is this project all about?• Enhanced TOP situational awareness and ability

to perform real-time assessments using Peak’s West-wide System Model (WSM)

• Provide tools to perform add-hoc studies using real-time state estimator solution as an input

• The full Peak RC operations, engineering, and IT teams supporting the tools

• Low cost, low maintenance for TOPs

Project Intro

3

• TOP system operatorso Improved real-time situational awareness of existing pre-

and post-contingency conditionso System operator ability to run studies using actual

system conditions (state estimator snapshot)

• TOP Study or Planning Engineerso Engineer support operations with next-day or real-time

studies using same model and data as Peako Engineer can export model and studies for further

analysis in PSLF, PSSE and PowerWorld

Who Benefits

4

• Peak RCo Additional eyes on the WSM as well as the Peak

RC initiated model validation activities will result in significant improvements to the WSM and applications that use the WSM.

o Data and application sharing will improve communications in real-time operations.

Current Customers

6

• PHAAUG is a committee established by the signatories of the Peak Hosted Advanced Applications Agreement.

• Users Group meets monthly via webinar and twice a year face-to-face.

• Focused on supporting the development and delivery of training.

PHAAUG (Peak Hosted Advanced Applications Users Group)

7

The primary objectives are to ensure members possess the tools necessary for adequate situational awareness (pre and post-contingency) and are able to meet compliance with pending NERC standards through the use of real-time contingency analysis software. In order to accomplish these objectives, PHAAUG shall:• Develop training materials.• Consolidate user feedback to provide to Peak’s PHAAUG

representatives.• Maintain a current list of members and their maintenance fee

contributions.• Evaluate performance of the HAA Agreement terms.• Ensure dues are sufficient to cover costs and reserves.• Prepare and submit an annual budget.

PHAAUG Purpose/Responsibilities

8

Peakrc.org – Discussion Board

• The discussion Board is available for the HAA Customers to have an open forum for questions, comments, and the option to reply to one another.

9

• The Enhancement log allows for the customer to request an enhancement on the functionality of the tools.

• The request will be reviewed by the User Group and Peak at the following monthly meeting.

Next Steps

11

• Peak Serviceo Year 1: $30k initiation, $75k service feeo Year 2 and 3: $75k each year

• Alstom Licenseo Year 1: $80k - $120k, depending on size of

systemo Future years: 20% of year one license

• WISP WAN connection is additional cost (optional)

Cost

12

• Execute contract with Peak • If interested in STNET, execute contract with

Alstom• Confirm your company has a Peakrc.org site

Admin - this person will provide you access once contract has been executed by both parties.

Tool Overview

15

• Wide-area overviews

• Station onelines• Why important?

Primary input to State Estimator

• Five minute snapshots

SCADA Situational Awareness

16

• Calculates state of the system (voltage magnitude, angle, flows, injections)

• Identifies facility rating and bus voltage limit exceedances

• Five minute snapshots

Real-time State Estimator

Phase angle estimate with phase angle measurement (measurement in tan color).

17

• Identifies the following unacceptable post-contingency system conditions:o Line/transformer facility rating exceedanceso Bus voltage limit exceedances (high and low voltage)o Node-pair phase angle limit exceedanceso Contingencies that result in an electrical islando Unsolved contingencies

• 8,000 + contingencies• Five minute snapshots

Real-time Contingency Analysis

18

• Power Flow and Study Contingency Analysis (STNET)

• Used by operators for near real-time studies (what-if scenarios)

• Used by engineers for performing next-day studies, operations support studies

Study Tools

19

• Peakrc.org / Cloud Services
