The Power of Now was launched in India in June 2001.At that time, we did not envisage the tremendousimpact the teaching would have on thousands ofIndians. As mentioned in a write-up which recentlyappeared in a popular spiritual magazine, “...And hisbook The Power of Now is on the bestseller list even inIndia, which teems with spiritual masters.” Testimonyto the fact that we are open to any teaching which isgenuine and strikes a chord in our hearts and being.

Eckhart traveled to India in February 2002. Headdressed gatherings in Chennai and Pondicherry, andthis was followed by a seven-day retreat in Rishikesh.Eckhart's first India tour culminated with a two-day

evening talk in Mumbai, which was attended by over500 people.

On my recent trip to France, I visited the gloriouscathedrals across the country. Their imposing grandeurand quietness was in stark contrast to the hustle andbustle inside the great temples of India. Prior to mydeparture I visited a typical, small roadside temple in abylane of Mumbai. In retrospect, I feel that the fiveminutes I spent within this temple’s chambers had thesame quality as the moments spent in a cathedral, despite the difference in their environment. It was thenI realized why this was so, and what was common toboth. It was the feeling ‘within’ and not that whichwas ‘without’. A feeling of peace and tranquility – astate of ‘being’ which most of us have experienced atsome point or another in our lives. Eckhart refers tothis as the invisible inner body, the animating presencewithin the visible and tangible body. In The Power ofNow he states, “Underneath your outer form, you areconnected with something so vast, so immeasurableand sacred, that it cannot be conceived or spoken of –yet I am speaking of it now. I am speaking of it not togive you something to believe in but to show you howyou can know it for yourself.”

This is what Practicing The Power of Now helpsyou to do. Moving forward from The Power of Now,it extracts the essence of the teachings, showing us

how to free ourselves from “enslavement to the mind.”Through meditations and techniques, Eckhart showsus how to quiet our thoughts, see the world in thepresent moment and find a path to “a life of grace, ease and lightness.”

During a brief conversation prior to his departurefrom Mumbai, Eckhart mentioned that Practicing ThePower of Now was for those who wanted the essencefrom The Power of Now in a book they could often referto, to help them enter into and sustain an awakenedstate of consciousness in everyday life. For those whohave not read The Power of Now or were daunted by itfor some reason, this book should provide a steppingstone in understanding the teaching in its shorter andconcise format.

Eckhart’s message on the ‘present moment’ isuniversal and timeless. As echoed in the words ofSensei Nyogen Senzaki, a pioneer in bringing ZenBuddhism to the West, “You cannot see it with youreyes. You cannot hold it with your hands. You cannotsmell it with your nose. You cannot hear it with yourears. You cannot taste it with your tongue. You cannotform it in your thoughts. Here it is!”

Since it was first published in 1997, The Power of Nowhas already had an impact on the collective conscious-ness of the planet far beyond anything I could haveimagined. It has been translated into fifteen languages, and I receive mail from around the globe every dayfrom readers who tell me that their lives have beenchanged through coming into contact with the teach-ing embodied in the book.

Although the effects of the insanity of the egoicmind are still visible everywhere, something new isemerging. Never before have so many people beenready to break out of collective mind-patterns thathave kept humanity in bondage to suffering since time

immemorial. A new state of consciousness is emerging. We have suffered enough! Even at this moment it isemerging from within you, as you hold this book inyour hands and read these lines that speak of the pos-sibility of living the liberated life, in which you nolonger inflict suffering on yourself or others.

Many of the readers who wrote to me expressed a wishto have the practical aspects of the teachings containedin The Power of Now presented in a more readily acces-sible format, to be used in their daily practice. Thatrequest became the impetus for this book.

In addition to the exercises and practices, however, this book also contains some shorter passages from theoriginal work that can serve as a reminder of some ofthe ideas and concepts and can become a primer forincorporating those concepts daily.

Many of those passages are particularly suitable formeditative reading. When you practice meditativereading, you do not read primarily to gather new infor-mation, but to enter a different state of consciousnessas you read. This is why you can re-read the same pas-sage many times, and every time it feels fresh and new.Only words that were written or spoken in a state ofpresence have this transformative power, which is thepower to awaken presence in the reader.

These passages are best read slowly. Many times

BEING AND ENLIGHTENMENT

19

There is an eternal, ever-present One Life beyond themyriad forms of life that are subject to birth and death. Many people use the word God to describe it; I oftencall it Being. The word Being explains nothing, but nordoes God. Being, however, has the advantage that it isan open concept. It does not reduce the infinite invisi-ble to a finite entity. It is impossible to form a mentalimage of it. Nobody can claim exclusive possession ofBeing. It is your very presence, and it is immediatelyaccessible to you as the feeling of your own presence. Soit is only a small step from the word Being to the expe-rience of Being.

ART_PAR3:ART_PAR3.qxd 24/06/10 2:11 PM Page 19

Page 15: INTRODUCTION by Eckhart Tolle 13 ACCESSING THE POWER OF NOW … THE... · 2020. 2. 14. · by Eckhart Tolle 13 PART ONE ACCESSING THE POWER OF NOW CHAPTER ONE Being and Enlightenment

BEING IS NOT ONLY BEYOND BUT ALSO DEEP

WITHIN every form as its innermost invisibleand indestructible essence. This means that itis accessible to you now as your own deepestself, your true nature. But don’t seek to grasp itwith your mind. Don’t try to understand it.

You can know it only when the mind isstill. When you are present, when your atten-tion is fully and intensely in the Now, Beingcan be felt, but it can never be understoodmentally.

To regain awareness of Being and to abide in thatstate of “feeling-realization” is enlightenment.

The word enlightenment conjures up the idea ofsome superhuman accomplishment, and the ego likesto keep it that way, but it is simply your natural stateof felt oneness with Being. It is a state of connectednesswith something immeasurable and indestructible, something that, almost paradoxically, is essentially youand yet is much greater than you. It is finding your truenature beyond name and form.

The inability to feel this connectedness gives rise tothe illusion of separation, from yourself and from theworld around you. You then perceive yourself, consciouslyor unconsciously, as an isolated fragment. Fear arises, andconflicts within and without become the norm.

The greatest obstacle to experiencing the reality of yourconnectedness is identification with your mind, whichcauses thought to become compulsive. Not to be ableto stop thinking is a dreadful affliction, but we don’trealize this because almost everybody is suffering fromit, so it is considered normal. This incessant mentalnoise prevents you from finding that realm of innerstillness that is inseparable from Being. It also creates afalse mind-made self that casts a shadow of fear andsuffering.

Identification with your mind creates an opaquescreen of concepts, labels, images, words, judgments, and definitions that blocks all true relationship. It comesbetween you and yourself, between you and your fellowman and woman, between you and nature, between youand God. It is this screen of thought that creates the illu-sion of separateness, the illusion that there is you and atotally separate “other.” You then forget the essential factthat, underneath the level of physical appearances andseparate forms, you are one with all that is.

The mind is a superb instrument if used rightly.Used wrongly, however, it becomes very destructive. Toput it more accurately, it is not so much that you useyour mind wrongly — you usually don’t use it at all. Ituses you. This is the disease. You believe that you areyour mind. This is the delusion. The instrument hastaken you over.

It’s almost as if you were possessed without knowingit, and so you take the possessing entity to be yourself.

THE BEGINNING OF FREEDOM is the realizationthat you are not the possessing entity — thethinker. Knowing this enables you to observe theentity. The moment you start watching thethinker, a higher level of consciousness becomesactivated.

You then begin to realize that there is a vast realmof intelligence beyond thought, that thought is only atiny aspect of that intelligence. You also realize that allthe things that truly matter — beauty, love, creativity, joy, inner peace — arise from beyond the mind.

You begin to awaken.

FREEING YOURSELF FROM YOUR MIND

The good news is that you can free yourself from yourmind. This is the only true liberation. You can take thefirst step right now.

START LISTENING TO THE VOICE IN YOUR HEAD asoften as you can. Pay particular attention toany repetitive thought patterns, those old

audiotapes that have been playing in your headperhaps for many years.

This is what I mean by “watching thethinker,” which is another way of saying: Listento the voice in your head, be there as the wit-nessing presence.

When you listen to that voice, listen to itimpartially. That is to say, do not judge. Do notjudge or condemn what you hear, for doing sowould mean that the same voice has come inagain through the back door. You’ll soon real-ize: There is the voice, and here I am listeningto it, watching it. This I am realization, thissense of your own presence, is not a thought. Itarises from beyond the mind.

So when you listen to a thought, you are aware notonly of the thought but also of yourself as the witness of thethought. A new dimension of consciousness has come in.

AS YOU LISTEN TO THE THOUGHT, you feel a con-scious presence — your deeper self — behind orunderneath the thought, as it were. The thoughtthen loses its power over you and quickly subsides, because you are no longer energizing the mindthrough identification with it. This is the beginningof the end of involuntary and compulsive thinking.

When a thought subsides, you experience adiscontinuity in the mental stream — a gap of“no-mind.” At first, the gaps will be short, a fewseconds perhaps, but gradually they willbecome longer. When these gaps occur, you feela certain stillness and peace inside you. This isthe beginning of your natural state of felt one-ness with Being, which is usually obscured bythe mind.

With practice, the sense of stillness andpeace will deepen. In fact, there is no end to itsdepth. You will also feel a subtle emanation ofjoy arising from deep within: the joy of Being.

In this state of inner connectedness, you are muchmore alert, more awake than in the mind-identifiedstate. You are fully present. It also raises the vibrationalfrequency of the energy field that gives life to the phys-ical body.

As you go more deeply into this realm of no-mind, as it is sometimes called in the East, you realizethe state of pure consciousness. In that state, you feelyour own presence with such intensity and such joythat all thinking, all emotions, your physical body, aswell as the whole external world become relativelyinsignificant in comparison to it. And yet this is not aselfish but a selfless state. It takes you beyond what

you previously thought of as “your self.” That pres-ence is essentially you and at the same time incon-ceivably greater than you.

INSTEAD OF “WATCHING THE THINKER,” you canalso create a gap in the mind stream simply bydirecting the focus of your attention into theNow. Just become intensely conscious of the pres-ent moment.

This is a deeply satisfying thing to do. In this way,you draw consciousness away from mind activity andcreate a gap of no-mind in which you are highly alertand aware but not thinking. This is the essence of med-itation.

IN YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE, you can practice thisby taking any routine activity that normally isonly a means to an end and giving it yourfullest attention, so that it becomes an end initself. For example, every time you walk up anddown the stairs in your house or place of work, pay close attention to every step, every move-ment, even your breathing. Be totally present.

Or when you wash your hands, pay atten-tion to all the sense perceptions associated withthe activity: the sound and feel of the water, the

movement of your hands, the scent of the soap, and so on.

Or when you get into your car, after youclose the door, pause for a few seconds andobserve the flow of your breath. Become awareof a silent but powerful sense of presence.

There is one certain criterion by which youcan measure your success in this practice: thedegree of peace that you feel within.

The single most vital step on your journey towardenlightenment is this: Learn to disidentify from yourmind. Every time you create a gap in the stream of mind, the light of your consciousness grows stronger.

One day you may catch yourself smiling at thevoice in your head, as you would smile at the antics ofa child. This means that you no longer take the contentof your mind all that seriously, as your sense of self doesnot depend on it.

ENLIGHTENMENT: RISING ABOVE THOUGHT

As you grow up, you form a mental image of who youare, based on your personal and cultural conditioning. We may call this phantom self the ego. It consistsof mind activity and can only be kept going through

constant thinking. The term ego means different thingsto different people, but when I use it here it means afalse self, created by unconscious identification withthe mind.

To the ego, the present moment hardly exists. Onlypast and future are considered important. This totalreversal of the truth accounts for the fact that in the egomode the mind is so dysfunctional. It is always con-cerned with keeping the past alive, because without it— who are you? It constantly projects itself into thefuture to ensure its continued survival and to seek somekind of release or fulfillment there. It says: “One day, when this, that, or the other happens, I am going to beokay, happy, at peace.”

Even when the ego seems to be concerned with thepresent, it is not the present that it sees: It misperceivesit completely because it looks at it through the eyes ofthe past. Or it reduces the present to a means to an end,an end that always lies in the mind-projected future.Observe your mind and you’ll see that this is how itworks.

The present moment holds the key to liberation. Butyou cannot find the present moment as long as you areyour mind.

Enlightenment means rising above thought. In theenlightened state, you still use your thinking mind when

needed, but in a much more focused and effective waythan before. You use it mostly for practical purposes, butyou are free of the involuntary internal dialogue, andthere is inner stillness.

When you do use your mind, and particularlywhen a creative solution is needed, you oscillate everyfew minutes or so between thought and stillness, between mind and no-mind. No-mind is conscious-ness without thought. Only in that way is it possible tothink creatively, because only in that way does thoughthave any real power. Thought alone, when it is nolonger connected with the much vaster realm of con-sciousness quickly becomes barren, insane, destructive.

EMOTION:

THE BODY’S REACTION TO YOUR MIND

Mind, in the way I use the word, is not just thought. It includes your emotions as well as all unconsciousmental-emotional reactive patterns. Emotion arises atthe place where mind and body meet. It is the body’sreaction to your mind — or you might say a reflectionof your mind in the body.

The more you are identified with your thinking, your likes and dislikes, judgments and interpretations, which is to say the less present you are as the watching

consciousness, the stronger the emotional energy chargewill be, whether you are aware of it or not. If you can-not feel your emotions, if you are cut off from them, you will eventually experience them on a purely physi-cal level, as a physical problem or symptom.

IF YOU HAVE DIFFICULTY FEELING YOUR EMO-

TIONS, start by focusing attention on the innerenergy field of your body. Feel the body fromwithin. This will also put you in touch withyour emotions.

If you really want to know your mind, thebody will always give you a truthful reflection,so look at the emotion, or rather feel it in yourbody. If there is an apparent conflict betweenthem, the thought will be the lie, the emotionwill be the truth. Not the ultimate truth of whoyou are, but the relative truth of your state ofmind at that time.

You may not yet be able to bring yourunconscious mind activity into awareness asthoughts, but it will always be reflected in thebody as an emotion, and of this you canbecome aware.

To watch an emotion in this way is basicallythe same as listening to or watching a thought, which I described earlier. The only difference is

that, while a thought is in your head, an emotionhas a strong physical component and so is pri-marily felt in the body. You can then allow theemotion to be there without being controlled byit. You no longer are the emotion; you are thewatcher, the observing presence.

If you practice this, all that is unconscious in youwill be brought into the light of consciousness.

MAKE IT A HABIT TO ASK YOURSELF: What’s goingon inside me at this moment? That question willpoint you in the right direction. But don’t ana-lyze, just watch. Focus your attention within.Feel the energy of the emotion.

If there is no emotion present, take yourattention more deeply into the inner energyfield of your body. It is the doorway into Being.
