All living things are made of cells

• 65% Oxygen

• 18% Carbon

• 10% Hydrogen

• 3% Nitrogen

• 2% Calcium

Organelle

• Mitochondria: powerhouse – produces energy

• Endoplasmic Reticulum – transports fluid and chemicals throughout the cytoplasm

• Cytoplasm – all of the fluid in the cell

• Golgi apparatus – produces/collects lipids and enzymes and packages them for export/carries material out of the cell

Organelle continued…

• Lysosomes: contains enzymes that can break down large molecules or invading matter (bacteria or viruses)

• Vacuoles: bubble like containers enclosed by membrane. Contain water/help water balance.

• Nucleus: brain of cell. Directs cell activity. Stores genetic material

• Cell membrane – controls passage of material in/out of cell. Acts as a boundary.

A cell is like a house….

• A eukaryote cell can be compared to a house. The walls are like the cell membrane. The halls and stairs are like the endoplasmic reticulum. The mailbox is like the golgi apparatus. The furnace is the mitochondria and the people are like the nucleus.

Write your own analogy

• Your analogy should start with the sentence “A cell is like a ___________”

• It should have 5-7 sentences.

• You should include six of the eight organelles we discussed.

• Marked out of 10
