Refugee

My idea came from the news coverage of the “Refugee Crisis”

I felt that there was not enough coverage on why refugees are not being allowed in, as one of the richest

countries in the world the UK definitely has the capacity.

• I would put this doc on BBC 3 or YouTube as these platforms are known for progressive content that questions social norms.

• Promotion through social media, such as twitter and facebook as most of my audience is on social media.

• Target audience is 16-25 as they are going into further education so will be politically minded

• The mode of address will be formal as it is a serious topic, I will convey this through music with sad tones and slow paced cutaway.

Page 3: Intitial ideas

Conventions• Facts and statistics about refugees and the laws surrounding

migration.

• Interview with a refugee or refugee support group about what they think should be done about the crisis.

• I will try to find an expert or representative who could explain the laws

• I will do voxpops about what people think about the legislation surrounding migration, this is to highlight the possible contrast of public opinion and law.

• Cutaways of news footage of refugees crossing border, maybe some shots of refugees in the support group.

Page 4: Intitial ideas

Primary research• For my refugee idea I sat down with 3

students to discuss the crisis. • I found out that none of them knew

that all refugees accepted into the UK will be deported at 18

• 2 of the 3 thought that this was unjust• The 3rd thought it was acceptable as

they thought the conflict would be over by then.

• Also 2/3 thought that 20,000 migrants being allowed into the country was a small number compared to the hundreds of thousands of migrants needing refuge.

This helps me as this shows me what peoples

opinions are on the crisis and why I should present the story in a more balanced way.

Strengths• People responded well to the idea saying that they were

surprised by some of the facts.• Current issue which will interest a wide range of people

not just target audience• Very good topic as its happening now• Balanced idea as interviewing people about laws and

refugees themselves• I Know the topic well so information is reliable• I have lots of contacts for my documentary eg. Refugee

support groups

Page 8: Intitial ideas

Weaknesses• Needed to do more detailed secondary research

on the topic• Need a back up idea if I cant interview a refugee

due to language barriers• Could be hard to do uniquely as many people are

talking about it • Need a more direct focus for the documentary• Needed to work out how to make my program

show both sides of the story

Page 9: Intitial ideas

Opportunities• Able to get an insight into the crisis• I could go to rallies and protests to get good

cutaways and interviews• Can get the publics opinion on the legislation to

see whether its fair• Good opportunity to question government

decision• Could use archive footage from news reports to

get a professional theme

Page 10: Intitial ideas

Threats• I might not be able to get camera shots inside the

refugee support group, I should create a back up plan

• There is a lot of coverage on the topic already so finding an original take on the topic

• Hard to interview refugees as there is a language barrier so meaning could be misinterpreted

• Also I might not be able to interview a representative to fully explain the laws, this will involve extra research so I can do it myself

Skateboarding-My idea is that Skateboarding like other action sports is considered to be a slightly antisocial and sometimes criminal sport. My idea came from my passion for skateboarding and enthusiasm for changing opinions on the sport. -My idea is different from other documentaries as instead of just following a specific skater or story I want to document the sport as a community-I would put my documentary on channels such as BBC 3 and YouTube channels like Vice as I think as skateboarding is such a progressive sport -I would promote it through social networking sites as a majority of skateboarders are active on the internet with Instagram accounts etc. -The mode of address will be informal as the roots of skateboarding have often been associated with counterculture to convey this I would use fast upbeat music with creative editing techniques to present the fast paced theme. - This is also to appeal to the target audience, as the target audience will be 14-20 year olds who may or may not skate themselves to appeal to the target audience I will present it myself and there will be elements of comedy throughout.

Page 13: Intitial ideas

Conventions• I will do Voxpops with the public about what they think about skateboarding.• I will try to interview “slam city skates” a famous London Skateshop on how

they feel skateboarding is presented I feel this is possible as I regularly skate with a member of staff there.

• I will follow a skateboarder on a day out in the streets filming for a video part (most likely me)

• Lots of slow motion cutaways of skaters in London, multiple shots of street skating and travelling through London.

• -The mode of address will be informal as the roots of skateboarding have often been associated with counterculture to convey this I would use fast upbeat music with creative editing techniques to present the fast paced theme.

• - This is also to appeal to the target audience, as the target audience will be 14-20 year olds who may or may not skate themselves to appeal to the target audience I will present it myself and there will be elements of comedy throughout.

Primary research: Questionaire

• Do you think Skateboarding is a legitimate sport?

• Do you think it is antisocial to skateboard in the streets?

• Would you stop and watch skateboarders if you saw them?

• Could you see skateboarding becoming an Olympic sport in the next few years?

All 4 people asked said they thought that Skateboarding was a legitimate sport, although they are

teenagers and traditionally the antisocial view of skating comes from adults. 1/4 people thought that skating in the streets was

antisocial. 2/4 said they would stop to watch

skatersOnly 1 person thought that

Skateboarding could be an Olympic sport.

This helps me as It gives me a perspective of skaters that I don’t

have being a skater myself.

Page 16: Intitial ideas
Page 17: Intitial ideas

Strengths• I am a skater so I have a lot of background knowledge of the

sport that could help the documentary.• Passionate about the subject so I can convey this through my

presentation• Certain audience members also said it was a unique idea and

that they hadn’t watched a British skateboarding documentary• It has a good appeal to the target audience which is teenagers

due to the conventions and topic• Creative visuals and cutaways • I have a good list of contacts and I am sure I can get the

interviews I wanted with slam city skates.

Page 18: Intitial ideas

Weaknesses

• Some of the audience said I should have back up ideas for my interviews, but I know some of the staff at the shop I want to interview

• Need a more focused research question and to focus my research on that question

• The idea is too broad, it may be too much to film

• Might not have permission in some parts of central London

Page 19: Intitial ideas

Opportunities• Able to get an insight into the sport and

community• I have access to large amounts of skaters and

different people to interview• London has multiple different skate communities • Also Southbank is an iconic skateboard spot

where I can film creative cutaways• Also there is prospect for endorsement from a

local skateshop

Page 20: Intitial ideas

Threats

• May not be able to interview Skate shop employee

• Could hurt myself while I’m filming which could slow production

• Might not be able to get permission to film in certain parts of central London

• Central London is extremely busy which could mess up audio and get in the way of shooting.

Jeremy Corbyn in the media

• My idea came from all the subjective headlines and how Jeremy Corbyn is being treated in the media

• This is an original idea as there are no documentaries as yet on how Jeremy Corbyn is presented.

• This would be on YouTube or BBC3 as many young supporters have joined Labour as they are being neglected by the current government. This would help appeal to them

• I would promote it on social media sites such as twitter or facebook as recently I have noticed there a lot of politically minded people who would be interested.

Page 22: Intitial ideas
Page 23: Intitial ideas

Conventions• I will do voxpops with the public on what they

think of Corbyns policies and whether they support the medias slamming of Corbyn.

• I will film a rally at which Corbyn will be speaking• I will then find a supporter and interview them, if

possible I would interview a labour member or representative.

• I will also to show contrast interview a Conservative member/supporter.

Page 24: Intitial ideas

The mode of address• The theme will be formal and investigative as I feel the

message Corbyn is spreading is serious and he is being represented badly. It will be balanced as I will interview both conservative and labour supporters.

• The music will be dramatic and I myself will present it.• The target audience id 16-23 year olds as this is the

age where people go into further education so will be politically minded. The young presenter will appeal to the target audience and the Astons will be creative

Page 25: Intitial ideas

Primary research: Interview

• Do you think how Jeremy Corbyn is being presented in the media is fair? • No because papers like the sun are printing white lies like how he was

mistaken for giving money to an IRA conman but this was a misprint from another newspaper but the sun shared it anyway.

• Do you think this will affect his political campaign?• Definitely, News papers like the Sun and Daily Mirror have extremely large

audience so if there only source of political news are these newspapers a large number of people will have a subjective point of view on corbyn.

• Would you say many of these news papers do it to just present interesting news or do they have ulterior motives?

• I am certain that they want to influence politics as the slamming of Corbyn is very similar to the headlines about Ed Miliband eg. When the Sun used a bad photo of Miliband eating a sandwich to use as reason to not believe what he said.

• This research is useful as the 1st two articles are blatant examples of bias and picking someone to attack. I think if I show this to the public I could gage interesting responses from the public.

Page 27: Intitial ideas

Strengths

• Effective secondary research, these are examples I can use in the actual documentary

• It’s a very current topic so will capture the attention of the audience

• Strong subject as it is relatable to politically minded individuals

• Good primary research• Increased appeal through modern topic

Page 28: Intitial ideas

Weaknesses

• Secondary research should be more focused on the topic

• It is also reported on a lot so need more specific ideas and examples

• Need more Astons and music ideas that will be in the documentary

• Would be hard to interview political figures

Banter? Or Bullying?•My idea came from the constant stream of news about cyber bullying, I wanted to delve into whether cyber bullies where aware of the seriousness of their crime. •This is an original idea as I want to see the stories from the cyber bullies point of view compared with the victims.•This is a different approach to the subject matter as I want to investigate the fine line between harmless fun and serious bullying. •I would want to share it on channel 4 and YouTube as they have both been platforms for discussion about social media.•I would promote it through social media sites such as twitter and Facebook as this is an audience who would be affected by cyber bullying also through sharing and retweeting my Documentary could reach a bigger audience

Page 31: Intitial ideas

Conventions• Interviews: I will have interviews with victims of Cyber

Bullying. I will also if possible try to interview a convicted cyber bully. If not I will try to get statements from them.

• I will try to film outside locations like YouTube headquarters to have relative mis en scene.

• I will also do voxpops with the public showing them specific hateful or bullying tweets to gage their reactions to see if there is controversy in opinion.

• I will use cutaways of people using social media and archive footage of news reports of cyber bullies.

Page 33: Intitial ideas

• Mode of address: The mode will be formal as cyber bullying is a serious topic just like bullying in general.

• I will convey this through serious music and the presentation will be done in a dramatic tone. Astons will be in the style of social media tabs and cutaways will be dramatic shots of hateful tweets etc.

• The target audience is young males and females aged 15-20 as I feel this is the age most people if at all suffer cyber bullying,

• I will try to appeal to the target audience through the use of a young presenter and the subject topic is something that concerns this age group. The style will be dramatic and technological to further the appeal.

Page 34: Intitial ideas

Primary research:Focus group

• I spoke with 3 students about cyberbullying and whether trolls were aware at the time of the severity.

• 2/3 people thought that most trolls wouldn’t realise the damage they were doing because the internet often makes you feel safer when sharing your opinions.

• The 3rd person thought that most cyber bullies were probably bullies in real life which is why they could easily insult others online.

• 2/3 thought that most things said online would not be said face to face for fear of confrontation.

This helps me as it backs up my own ideas that mot Cyber bullying incidents without the bully realizing the full extent of

their bullying. This also shows me what I could ask people who have been accused of cyber bullying.

• These articles are useful as they provide info about different cases of cyberbullying. But they also show me what I can do differently by showing it from the perspectives of the trolls.
