Internet6 (Internet-IPv6) is becoming mainstream today

Over  20%  of  Google  hits  in  USA,  Germany,  Switzerland,  Belgium.

15,38%  of  Google  Hits  in  Peru,  most  Telefónica  del  Peru  customers.

Digital Giants: Google (Websearch, Streaming, Developers)

* Temporary

Google  is  one  key  supporter  of  IPv6  transiSon.  •  Also  key  source  of  IPv6  roll-‐out  stats.    Google  has  enabled  most  of  its  services  over  IPv6.  •  Google  public  DNS,  Google  Maps,  Google  APIs  •  Not  sSll  on  Google  compute  (Virtual  machines)    Youtube  becomes  one  of  the  major  IPv6  content  traffic  once  users  get  enabled.

Digital Giants: Facebook (Social Networks, DataCenter)

* Temporary

USA  Internet6  capable  smartphones  surf  Facebook  services  30-‐40%  faster.    IPv6  traffic  to  FB  services  DOUBLES  every  year.    Facebook  has  built  out  many  IPv6-‐only  (>90%  internal  v6  traffic)  •  Leads  IPv6-‐only  Datacenters  /  Cloud  market.

Digital Giants: Apple (Mobile/Laptops , Dev Ecosystem)

Apple:  “Enterprise  &  cellular  providers  are  increasingly  deploying  IPv6  DNS64/NAT64  networks.  A  DNS64/NAT64  network  is  an  IPv6-‐only  network”  •  ConSnues  to  provide  access  to  IPv4  content  through  translaSon    Nov  2015  iOS  9.2  &  OS  X  10.11.2  releases  are  IPv6-‐only  capable.    IPv6  delivery  support  included  in  many  Akamai  products  •  Helps  developers  to  build  compaSble  Apps  (new  and  simple  API  to  synthesize  NAT64  IPv6  addresses

from  IPv4  literals)

Digital Giants: AKAMAI (CDN – Content Delivery Network)

IPv6  delivery  support  included  in  many  Akamai  products  •  Simple:  flipping  a  configuraSon  switch  •  Customer  prerequisite:  ensure  addresses  data  handling  (logging,  tracking,  reputaSon)    IPv6  servers  in  95  countries,  >1.500  locaSons  &  590  different  network  providers    In  2015  Q2  IPv4  unique  addresses  decreased  1.1%  (to  Akamai  Intelligent  Plaoorm)  •  Result  of  IPv6  roll  out  and  Telcos  IPv4  conservaSve  behavior  (CGNAT).    •  Secondary  market  for  IPv4  addresses  heaSng  up  (150K  addresses  $950,000  deal)

Digital Products: Comcast Xfinity (VoIP, Set-top box)  Xfinity  Voice  &  Xfinity  X1  connected  set-‐top  box  plaoorm  moving  to  IPv6-‐only

•  Reduce  their  reliance  on  private  IPv4  addressing  within  their  network.  •  Since  they  have  control  over  both  ends  of  communicaSons  in  most  •  Content  providers  will  provide  contents  over  IPv6  to  ensure  best  user  experience

Digital  Products:  ANDROID,  IOS,  Windows  (Smartphone  OS)

Android,  Windows  8.1  &  IOS  9.2  Smartphones  are  IPv6-‐only  capable  (NAT64+DNS64)    •  464xlat  funcSonality  enables  access  to  legacy  IPv4  services.    A  number  of  carriers  led  by  T-‐Mobile  US  are  deploying  IPv6-‐only.

•  Handsets  only  have  IPv6  external  address.  •  Traffic  goes  directly  out  to  the  Internet  with  no  address  translaSon.

 During  the  past  few  months,  AT&T  Wireless  and  Sprint  have  also  started  deploying  IPv6  to  some  of  their  Android  handsets.    •  In  fact,  all  four  of  the  top  US  mobile  carriers  launched  Samsung's  Galaxy  S6  flagship  phone  with  IPv6

turned  on  by  default.

Digital Products: Openstack, Nephos6 (Cloud)

Openstack  Kilo  enables  today  public/private  naSve  IPv6  Clouds.    New  enhancements  in  “Kilo”  release:  •  Ability  to  assign  mulSple  IPv6  prefixes  for  a  network  •  BeMer  IPv6  router  support:  there  is  no  network  address  translaSon  (NAT)  or  floaSng  IP  model  for

IPv6  in  OpenStack.  The  assumpSon  is  that  VMs  are  assigned  globally  routed  addresses  and  can  communicate  directly  using  pure  L3  rouSng.

•  Extra  DHCP  opSons  (DNS,  MTU,  etc.)

Emerging  market.  E.g.  hMp://www.nephos6.com/

Digital Products: v6 Virtual Machines, Webhosting (Cloud)

As  of  Nov  2015  AWS  is  not  providing  IPv6  naSve  Virtual  Machines.    However,  others  such  as  HostVirtual  are  providing  naSve  v6  VMs  &  Services.  •  A  complete  list  of  IPv6  Cloud  providers:  hMp://bit.ly/1QcoQaG      Cloudfare  offers  simple  and  free  websites  adaptaSon  to  IPv6.

Digital Deals: UK Smart Meter Network (m2m / IoT)

One  of  largest  M2M/IoT  deals  (valued  at  £1.5bn  over  a  15-‐year  lifespan)    Major  naSonal  infrastructure  project  that  will  involve  the  roll  out  of  53  million  gas  and  electricity  meters  across  the  UK  by  2020.    Comms  based  on  IPv6  cellular  m2m  +  6LowPAN  (IPv6-‐based  wireless  mesh  soluSon).    Telefónica’s  UK  unit,  O2,  will  serve  two  of  the  project’s  three  regions.

IPv6:  a  disrupSve  Internet  change/innovaSon?

Amara’s  Law  says  that  we  tend  to  overesSmate  the  effect  of  a   technology   in   the  short   run  and  underesSmate  the  effect  in  the  long  run.    (…)    A  latent  capability  develops,  and  when  the  final  pieces  fall  together,  a  big  swing  occurs.    (…)    That   seems   to   be   happening   for   some   of   the  largest  operators   in   the  world,   such  as  Verizon  Wireless,   T-‐Mobile,   AT&T,   and   Comcast  reaching   very   high   numbers   in   the   US.   With  some   of   these   operators,   most   of   the   served  users  have  IPv6  capability.

While  there  is  a  lot  of  innovaSon  and  change  in  the  Internet,  many  of  us  have  been  accustomed  to  the  basic   Internet   technology   changing   slowly.   But  when   the   right   parts   come   together,   the   changes  can  actually  be  surprisingly  dramaSc  and  sudden.    The  future  is  here,  now.    Jari  Arkko,  IETF  Chair
