Southern Appalachian Hoedown Everyone has a partner and is designated as an odd or even couple. Tradi-tional mountain figures with a caller leading the dance is performed while also performing the rhythmic footwork that will be taught prior to the fig-ures. The dance is performed in a counter clockwise direction.

Old Time Square Dance Similar to that of the southern Appalachian hoedown, only no footwork is required. Dancers can skip, walk, or dance however the music feels to them while performing the figures and partner progressions. Many of the small figures are performed in groups of 4 or 8 with partners facing each other in a square formation while the caller shouts the next movements.

Virginia Reel An American Country dance performed with couples facing each other in parallel lines and a caller leads the dance through various movements. It was
