Our international student community

We have students and staff from over 150countries, involved in adiverse range of activitiesand programmes of study.From Study Abroad, trans-national education,research and collaboration,to short courses and hosting visiting scholars.

Our international student body, which includesstudents from the European Union (EU),grows strongly year on year, and internationalstudents are a vital and vibrant part of campuslife at the University. We recognise theimportant contribution that our internationalstudents make, facilitating a sharedunderstanding between countries and helpingto develop an international awareness forfuture employability in a globalised world. Thediversity of experience and outlooks from ourinternational students help to form excitingscholarly activity based around achievement,open-mindedness and academic excellence.

We have a network of collaborative exchangeswith university partners all over the world, andregularly welcome students from institutions inJapan, Korea, the United States and Canada tostudy part of their degrees with us. We alsohelp our students to experience othercountries and cultures through our exchange, Study Abroad, and Socrates Erasmus programmes.

We also regularly travel overseas to teachand offer English language courses delivered ina number of countries. Over the past 26 yearsthe International Short Programme Unit(ISPU), part of our education of department,has established a network of partnerships withministries of education and universities fromaround the world. The ISPU designs and runscustomised programmes for internationalteachers, teacher trainers, university lecturers,school principals and other educationalprofessionals from a number of countries ona regular basis, and also welcomes groups to the University of Chichester on our Bognor Regis Campus.

Socrates Erasmus and Exchange programmesThe University of Chichester has strong andestablished international links with institutionsand organisations all over the world.

Socrates Erasmus is an EU-led initiative thatallows mobility of students and staff betweencountries for training and to get a taste offoreign study. The University and our studentbody are active and committed participants inthis activity. Each year many students fromEurope and Turkey come to the University tostudy, and in exchange many University ofChichester students grasp the opportunity toexperience other cultures and countries.

Our reciprocal exchanges with partneruniversities throughout the world enables ourstudents to study part of their course overseas,and for us to host students in return.

Study AbroadIf you are from outside of the European Union,or from an EU or Turkish university we do notcurrently have an agreement with, we welcomeapplications from Study Abroad students tospend part of their course with us.

Following successful application, and permissionfrom your current college, it will be possible foryou to study one or two semesters at theUniversity of Chichester. The grades youreceive will be transferred back to your homeuniversity or college and awarded as credit foryour final degree.

This is an excellent way to experience studyingin the United Kingdom as part of your overall degree.

Studying in a new country isa transformative and positiveexperience. It can also seemdaunting at first, especially ifyou haven’t spent much timeabroad before. More so ifthe education system inyour home country is verydifferent to that of the UK,and English is not yourfirst language.

Fortunately, as well as having friendlyapproachable staff who are always ready tohelp, we have a complete range of supportservices for international students. These areavailable to help you adjust as seamlessly aspossible, and ensure you realise your fullacademic potential, while getting the most outof all that the UK has to offer in your free time.

Student ServicesOur student services provision offers practicalsupport and advice on health, visas, study skills,accommodation and settling in to your newenvironment. You will have access to adedicated international student adviser, as wellas a range of University support services.

International Academic Language SupportAll international students are entitled to anorientation programme and ongoing languagesupport throughout their course of study. Thisincludes extra tutorial support, social activities,English assessment and extra time and the useof dictionaries in exams. This service is entirelyfree of charge.

Supporting you with yourEnglish language needsduring your programme isimportant to us. It will helpyou to get the most of yourstudies, university life, andfuture career.

We offer an English language programme(International English Studies) and an academicand language support package to all ourstudents for whom English is not a firstlanguage. Whether or not you choose to studyInternational English Studies with your chosensubject, all international students are entitled toInternational Academic and Language Support(IALS) at no extra charge.

What is IALS?• IALS is an essential and distinctive feature

of the support we offer our internationalstudents.

• It is a package specially designed to supportinternational students for whom English is not a first language and/or those who have not previously been educated in the UK.

• The support runs alongside your regularprogramme, at undergraduate or postgraduate level, and across all subjects.

How does the support help?We recognise that international students mayface special challenges when they enter UKuniversity education.• IALS offers you specialised help with the

development of your English language skills and with their use in a UK academic environment.

• It supports you in making the transition tostudy in a new academic culture.

What does the package offer?• A two-day orientation programme• A language profiling service so that you, and

your department(s), may be advised on thebest options for language support.

• Individual tutorial support, (up to three hours per student, per semester) to help you plan, carry out and check assessed work.

• Social gatherings, excursions and other informal contact with international students.

• English language classes (if you are not already taking the BA International English Studies programme as part of your studies; see page 30).

• The use of extra time and bilingual dictionaries in University examinations.

• A regular point of contact with a memberof staff who can supply answers to yourquestions about academic life in the UK.

How will I know which services to use?• You will have a regular tutor who will advise

you throughout your studies.• You can, if you wish, stop using the

support at any point in your studies.

As an international student, you willautomatically be enrolled when you begin yourstudies at the University and the services areprovided at no extra cost to you.

Steeped in history, theUniversity is situated ontwo campuses. Bishop Ottercampus in the historicRoman walled city ofChichester, and theBognor Regis campus.

The Bognor Regis campus is undergoingextensive upgrading through a multimillionpound renovation programme.

Both campuses have accommodation forinternational students. This ranges fromshared rooms with shared bathrooms toprivate en-suite study-bedrooms.

If your course is split over both campuses thenthere is a shuttle bus that runs regularlythroughout the day. Wherever you arestudying you will benefit from the friendlycampus atmosphere, excellent student to staffratio, and exciting recreational opportunities.

Where you’ll be learning

Choosing a university ismore than deciding whatyou want to learn on acourse. Where you willbe learning and yourenvironment will also have abig impact on your universityexperience and success.

Bishop Otter campusThis historical campus, based in Chichester,dates back to 1839. It houses the Universitychapel, main building and administrative offices,and is surrounded by extensive parkland,playing fields, and well-maintained grounds.

Only a short walk from the bustling centre ofChichester, this campus is where you will be ifyou are studying one of our Arts, Humanities,Social Science or Sport programmes. As well ascomprehensive sport and educational facilities,students are fully served with accommodation,a restaurant, cafe, award-winning bar andrecreational facilities.

Bognor Regis campus Built in the late 18th Century and originallydesigned to be a holiday residence for KingGeorge III, the Dome has long been a centralpart of Bognor Regis life and now representsthe centre point of the recently renovatedcampus. You will be able to benefit from thesenewly renovated facilities first hand if you arestudying one of our business related courses inthe School of Enterprise Management andLeadership (SEMAL).

Recent improvements comprise a multi-millionpound, high-specification, learning resourcecentre, classroom improvements andupgraded, secure and comfortableaccommodation. Wi-Fi access allows you toconnect to the internet or your online learningaccount anywhere on campus.

West Sussex offers a perfect combination ofcountryside, coast, bustling cities and traditionalcountry villages. The South Downs National Parkis close by so there are plenty of outdooractivities on offer, from walking and horse ridingto exploring cycling routes, while the coastlineprovides sailing and water sports.

The Bognor Regis campus is a 10 minute walkfrom the sea and is famed for its sandy withpebble beach coastline and water sports.Here you’ll find traditional seaside cafes,amusements as well as a choice of high streetshops, bars, restaurants and nightclubs. Where you’ll be socialising

There’s a lot to enjoyabout living in the UK,and socialising duringyour studies is seen as animportant part of a Britishuniversity education.

This is because the friends and networks youmake at university help you develop and growthroughout your study and stay with youthroughout your life.

You will have a wide range of opportunitiesto meet people, not only in class, but at eventsorganised by the University and Students’Union; and, when using the sport andrecreational facilities on campus.

Free orientation and welcome partyAs an international student you will be invitedto the free international party and orientationprogramme before the beginning of yourcourse. This is a great opportunity to get tomeet staff, and get to know other students.

Also, look out for international events heldthroughout the year, such as guided trips, visits and social events.

Students’ UnionThe Students’ Union (SU) is a long establishedand important part of campus life in the UK.The SU is an actual trade union that campaignsfor your rights as a student, and can providepractical help and support to students.

As well as student organised clubs andsocieties, the SU is also responsible for runningthe entertainment and events that studentshave access to throughout the year.

The SU licensed bars and canteens offersubsidised refreshments throughout the week,and well into the evening.

Elected representatives manage the variousparts of the SU remit, and all students arefree to run and campaign for election.There is an international student officerwho deals especially with overseas studentsand their representation within the University’s student body.

The University has a widerange of comfortable,secure and modernaccommodation onboth campuses.

This ranges from shared rooms andbathrooms, to catered private accommodationwith en suite bathrooms.

We also have off-campus accommodationavailable. This ranges from private lets, sharedhouses, and home stays.

Living with other students is a fun and easyway to get to know other people. We havea range of accommodation available and willmake every effort to cater to the needs ofall residents. If you have special dietary orparticular living preferences please let usknow well in advance.

How to apply for accommodationTo apply for accommodation you will need tocomplete an application form and pay a depositto the University. You will receive completedetails about how to do this once you haveaccepted your offer for your course.

On-campus accommodation is guaranteed toall international students as long as you apply by the summer deadline (please check with the Accommodation Office).

Although every effort is made to provide on-campus accommodation to those whoapply after the deadline, home stay options are guaranteed.

CostsWe have a selection of different rooms, andcosts vary. On-campus rooms cost between£90 a week for a single room with sharedfacilities, up to £150 per week for privatefacilities and meals.

This includes the cost of all utilities. Pleasecheck with the Accommodation Office for an up-to-date price list.

Off-campus home stay and house or flat shareaccommodation varies, but on average isbetween £65 to £105 per week. You will needto check in advance whether or not utility billsare included.

You will be taught in astimulating environment byhighly qualified andaccomplished academic staff.Our programmes arerenowned for academicrigour and real worldpracticality.

British degrees involve a high level of criticaland analytical thinking. This is achieved throughworking closely with your tutors and fellowstudents. There is also a significant amount ofresearch, assessment, and self study.

Our courses will also prepare you for yourworking life. Many courses contain an elementto help you promote yourself throughout yourcareer and give you real life work experiencethrough placement opportunities. There is awide range of courses available to youdepending on your level of academic study and level of English.

We also offer• A pre-sessional programme in academic

English – to improve your English and prepare you for studying at a UK university(see facing page for more information).

• A wide range of undergraduate programmes – many of which can be combined with International English Studies.International English Studies is a Joint or Minor degree programme which focuses on language studies which allows you to begin your three-year degree programme with a minimum IELTS score of 5.5 (see page 30 for more information).

Our Pre-Sessional EnglishProgramme focuses onthe development ofUniversity-level academiclanguage and studyskills for those planningto undertake degreeprogrammes deliveredin English.

The Programme is open to all those for whomEnglish is not a first or main working language.It is specially tailored for those who intend tostudy at the University of Chichester and whoneed to improve academic and language skillsby the equivalent of 0.5 of an IELTS grade.

The Programme is also open to you if, forother reasons, you wish to improve youracademic language and study skills beforebeginning a degree programme in the medium of English.

When and where is the Programme?• The Pre-Sessional Programme runs from

the beginning of July to August over seven weeks. Please see website for exact dates.

• The Programme is delivered on ourBognor Regis campus.

What will I gain from the Programme?• Personal language development including

academic English related to your future degree programme

• Relevant study skills for a UK university education

• Experience of studying a university-level module

• Experience of studying with UK universitylearning and teaching approaches andresources

• Individual guidance on your progress andpersonal development strategies

• Opportunities to learn and socialise with those with similar aims from a variety of international backgrounds.

The Programme is delivered using small groupworkshops, individual tutorials and guided selfand group study. It is delivered by a smallspecialist team of tutors who regularly teachon Chichester undergraduate and graduateprogrammes and are experienced in workingwith international students.

There are three main elements to theprogramme: Language development,academic skills development and a studymodule. You will also need to put inapproximately one additional hour of self-study for each hour you spend in classto complete the Programme successfully.

Assessment is included within the three mainelements of the Programme. You will need toshow, in each element, that, by the end of theProgramme, you have reached the level oflanguage competence you need to begin yourdegree studies at the University of Chichester.Provided this is the case, the University will, oncompletion of the Programme, then confirmyour offer as unconditional.

International English Studies

International English Studies(IES) is a three-year BAdegree programme speciallydesigned for students forwhom English is not a firstor main language, and whowish to complete a degreein their chosen subject withintegrated English and studyskills support.

For example, you could study Business as your chosen degree subject, and have theopportunity to have additional English andstudy skills support by combining your degreewith IES. This means you can:• Start your degree with an IELTS score of 5.5

(minimum)• Gain additional English and study skills

support• Complete your degree with single honours

in your chosen subject if you wish.• Complete your degree in just three years.• Have flexibility depending on personal

preferences, needs and progress.• Be assessed and advised on making

appropriate choices.

How does it work?You will first be assessed to see how muchEnglish support you need. Then, for example,in Year 1 you might study the Joint Route:• 50% International English Studies• 50% Academic Subject• And then in Years 2 and 3, you have a choice

of one of three routes:1) You can continue with the Joint Route

(50%/50%)2) You can take the Major/Minor Route

and study: 75% Academic Subject and 25% International English Studies

3) You can take the Embedded Routeand study: 100% Academic Subject with integrated English Support.

* If you choose route 1 or 2 you will receive a BA (Hons) Degree from the list below and or with International English Studies.

This is a practical performance-based Mastersprogramme combining extensive developmentof skill as a member of a dedicated choralensemble, with a range of related skills in choirtraining, choral arrangement and individual vocaldevelopment. The Master’s choir will undertakeat least two concert tours in each academicyear, both in the UK and overseas. At this level,you will be expected to demonstrate yourcritical awareness of current practice in yourown specialist area through your skills in choralarrangement, choral direction and choralsinging. This can only be done with a fluent levelof technical and expressive skill, which gives youthe confidence and the means to showoriginality in applying through your work theknowledge you have developed in research andscholarship. The minimum language requirement forstudying at the University of Chichester isIELTS 6.0. However, if you achieve 5.5 you can study International English Studies alongsidesome subjects (see page 36). StudyingInternational English Studies allows you toreceive additional English tuition as part ofyour course while continuing your studies inyour chosen subject, so that you can, if youwish graduate with single honours in yourchosen subject. The cost of living andstudying at Chichester

The cost of living andstudying will depend on thetype of course you arestudying and where andhow you choose to live.

You will either be studying a ‘laboratory-basedcourse’ which means that specialist equipmentor resources are required to deliver yourcourse, or a ‘classroom-based course’.

Laboratory-based courses are £9990 per year, and classroom-based courses areapproximately £8755 per year.

In addition to this you should budget to pay for core books for your course, and any otherspecial equipment you may need. How muchthis will be varies, and some students spendmuch more than others.
