choosing what to studyat Unitec you can build a study programme to suit you. this means starting your studies at the right level and then progressing to more advanced programmes as you need to. You will be taught by lecturers who are experts in their field and have excellent connections in their industry.

Many Unitec programmes include a work placement, which can give you a competitive advantage when you start applying for jobs.

Variation to Work VisaDuring your studies, if you are eligible to work 20 hours per week, immigration new Zealand (inZ) will include this condition on your student Visa. this allows you to work part-time during the academic year (February to December). You are then able to apply for a further Variation to Work Visa, which allows you to work full-time during the summer holidays (December to February). Graduate Job search Visa (GJs)once you have completed your studies and if you are eligible, you can apply for the GJs visa.

part-time jobs there are all sorts of part-time jobs in auckland throughout the year including hospitality, office work and retail. some part-time jobs may continue throughout the semester, some may just be for a few days. employers in nZ must abide by the laws when hiring staff so make sure you know what the law is: http://dol.govt.nz/er/

on campusif you want the buzz and security of living on campus, Unitec offers a range of accommodation from a studio to five-bedroom apartments which are all self-catered. each apartment (except for the studio) has a separate bedroom, lounge, bathroom (or two) and a well-equipped kitchen. Your furnished bedroom has a comfortable bed, some storage, space to study and a connection for a phone and computer (please note that if you require a fast broadband connection, then that is your responsibility). there is parking available and also an on-site laundry. You can choose to stay for a semester or a year.

Unitec residential Village on campus this 134-bed apartment complex offers a mix of living options (listed below). prices are for one person/per bedroom/per week (based on one person per bedroom):5 bedroom/2 bathroom apartment – rent per bedroom: nZD 175

Meet and greetUnitec offers a pick-up service from auckland airport (homestay students excluded) for a fee of nZD 65. please fill in the form at least five days before you arrive in auckland. You can find the form online www.international.unitec.ac.nz > pre-departure and download the pre-departure guide.

off campus stay with a homestay family all homestay students have their own room and are provided with two meals a day during the week and three meals a day at the weekends. the cost is nZD 270 per week, plus a placement fee of nZD 250 and an airport pick-up fee of nZD 80. the homestay information and application form can be found online at www.accommodation.unitec.ac.nz

Finding your own accommodation if you are looking for your own accomodation, please make sure you arrive in auckland at least two weeks before your semester starts. some houses, flats or apartments will not be furnished so you may need to purchase household items when you first move in. there is a huge variety of accommodation available and to secure this, you need to view the property and meet with the landlord to formally sign the tenancy agreement, so please do arrive in auckland early! tenancy and landlord details are here http://www.dbh.govt.nz/tenancy-agreement

Unitec offers a wide range of programmes, from certificates to doctoral degrees. A doctorate is the highest level of study in New Zealand (level 10), while certificates usually start a level 3. If you’re studying for a bachelors degree you would normally take courses at levels 5 to 7.

the theory, your knowledgeregardless of the programme you choose, your theoretical knowledge is an integral part of your learning process. You will attend lectures, tutorials, workshops and also participate in the classroom.

Bachelor of computing systems students complete a semester-long work project for an organisation of their choice.

Boatbuilding students create a variety of project boats. in 2011, one of them, Karma police, successfully held its own against much larger boats in the round the north island race.

early childhood education students work in an early childhood education centre throughout their studies.

Unitec collects and stores information about students to comply with various statutes, including the education act, the public Finance act and the inland revenue act. We also collect and store information to enable us to make decisions regarding your progress, and to provide you with evidence of your academic achievements. it may be disclosed to academic and administration staff where relevant to their duties, and also where relevant to other agencies such as the Ministry of education, tertiary education commission, new Zealand Qualifications authority, Ministry of Foreign affairs and trade, career services, tribal trusts and scholarship providers, Ministry of immigration, industry training organisations, industry licensing and registration bodies, other tertiary institutions, previous secondary

schools and providers of work experience for students in courses with a practical component. please note that your name, date of birth and residency as entered on this enrolment will be included in the national student index, and will be used in an authorised information Matching programme with the new Zealand Birth register. For further information please see www.nsi.govt.nz/ima. in addition, when required by statute, we will release information to government agencies such as the new Zealand police, Department of Justice, inland revenue and the accident compensation corporation. You have the right to see and correct information which has been collected by us.

Guidelines for credit recognition/cross-creditsplease note:

the maximum credits ever granted is half a programme, but the actual credits granted will vary according to individual assessment, as credits are based on how similar your previous courses are to Unitec’s courses.

if you want to apply for cross-credits, you need to:

» obtain detailed course descriptions (in english) from the previous institution you studied at

» complete the application for credit recognition/cross-credits (online or in the international prospectus)

» please apply for credits at least two months before the semester begins; do not leave it too late as the process can take 2-3 months, and credits approved more than two weeks after the semester begins will not affect your enrolment (ie you will not be able to withdraw from the courses or apply for a refund due to the credits). credit applications received less than two months before the semester begins may not be assessed in time, and applications received less than one month in advance will not be assessed in time.

note: if the previous qualification is from new Zealand – please take these items to any student central office on campus. (if you are in your final semester, bring your results so far, plus confirmation of the courses you are currently enrolled in. provisional assessment can be made on this basis; your final results will be required to confirm any credits provisionally granted.)

if the previous qualification is from a country other than new Zealand – please apply through the international office; email the credit application form and course outlines as pdf or Word documents if possible as this allows faster assessment than hard copies.
