You are very welcome to the International Pan Celtic Festival, which returns to Derry for a second year. The Pan Celtic Festival is a celebration of the cultural links between the nations of Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Brittany, Cornwall and the Isle of Man. The theme running through all of our events is one of Celtic celebration, and we hope that everyone gets a chance to learn a little more about the unique connections between the Celtic countries, including a taste of the different languages. Is gael-ionad ealaíon agus cultúir é Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin lonnaithe i bhfoirgneamh suntasach ina bhfuil spás taibhiúcháin, caife, seomraí ranga agus spéirghairdín. Agus í suite i gcroílár na Ceathrún Gaeltachta atá ag teacht chun cinn, cuireann an Chultúrlann imeachtaí agus féilte ceoil ar fáil ar bhonn rialta, imeachtaí le scoth na gceoltóirí traidisiúnta agus tíre. Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin is an Irish language arts and cultural centre, housed in a landmark building which incorporates a performance space, café, language classrooms and an urban roof garden. At the heart of Derry’s developing Gaeltacht Quarter, the venue runs regular concert and festival events featuring the best in Irish traditional and folk music. It opened its doors in September 2009 and was named after long-time Irish language activist, Seán Ó Canáin.

This festival comprises a variety of workshops, masterclasses and evening concerts with old-style step dancing taking centre stage.

One of the highlights of the Pan Celtic Festival each year is the choral concert. This event offers an opportunity to hear choirs performing in a variety of Celtic languages in the beautiful surroundings of Derry’s Christ Church. Visiting choirs from Scotland and Wales will perform alongside some local Irish choirs in what is sure to be an ethereal experience.

The Pan Celtic Festival opens with colourful ceremony including performances from all of the participating Celtic nations.

Experience a wide variety of Celtic cultural traditions, including indigenous music, folk singing and dancing.

The opening ceremony will be followed by a Pan-Celtic céilí dancing event, in which everyone is welcome to take part.

The six Celtic nations will parade through the city centre in full costume, led by a conglomerate of pipers marching as ‘The Pan Celtic Pipe Band’.

The Armagh Rhymers in Guildhall Square

The Armagh Rhymers are one of Europe’s most celebrated folk theatre ensembles. A respected professional group of entertainers that have delighted audiences for over 30 years with our unique blend of mumming, poetry, music, drama, song and dance. Their style is deeply rooted in the old Irish Mumming traditions and they are easily recognised by their willow masks. After the Parade of Nations they will do an outdoor performance in Guildhall Square.

The cultural affinity between Scotland and Ireland has been long celebrated through the arts. In this event, Irish and Scottish musicians, singers and dancers will take part in a day of entertainment for all the family. Anyone is welcome to come along and take part in this social event.

Beidh Julian Whiting ag teagasc céimeanna damhsa Ceilteacha le tionlacan ceoil ó The Brim. This event is open to both seasoned dancers and those with a keen interest in learning. Julian Whiting will teach a range of Celtic dance steps with musical accompaniment by The Brim. Consisting of piano accordion (Alan Pengelly) and guitar (Jamie Toms) The Brim perform an eclectic mix of both contemporary and traditional Cornish music, including their own compositions along with Celtic/folk music from regions outside of Cornwall. Alan and Jamie have built upon their distinct compatibility as a duo to help develop and establish a new and dynamic sound, drawing upon elements of folk, jazz and other genre nuances.

Is mac léinn taighde é Conal Mac Seáin in Ollscoil Uladh. Cainteoir dúchais Gaeilge de bhunadh Dhún na nGall tá PhD ar bun aige i saol agus saothar Enrí Uí Mhuirgheasa.

Conal Mac Seáin is a research student in Ulster University. A native speaker of Irish from the Donegal Gaeltacht he is currently working on a PhD on the life and works of Henry Morris.

Escaldàrium: ‘Finscéal tine agus uisce’- seó ilmheáin le ceol beo, scéalaíocht agus íomhánna sainchruthaithe don Fhéile Pan Cheilteach le taithí ar leith a thabhairt don Eoraip.

Suite sa bhaile teirmeach Caldes de Montbui (Barcelona), gach bliain i mí Iúil tagann 4,000 duine le chéile don Escaldàrium sa seanchearnóg ag damhsa agus ag ceol faoi thaispeántais dhraíochta tine agus uisce agus le ceol beo na féile féin. I 2014 bhí an grúpa traidisiúnta ó Dhoire Dara mar aíonna speisialta.

Escaldàrium: ‘A legend of fire and water’ is a multimedia show with live music, storytelling and images specially created for the Pan Celtic to unveil a unique experience in all Europe.

Set in the thermal town of Caldes de Montbui (Barcelona) every July the Escaldàrium gathers 4,000 people in the old square to dance and sing under spectacular performances of fire and water and to the festival’s own live music. In 2014 the Derry traditional band Dara performed as special guests.

Dr Wmffre is a Lecturer in Irish Language at Ulster University. An expert in phonetics and dialectology, he is currently engaged in research in various aspects of the Celtic languages.

This talk by Niall Comer, a Lecturer in Irish in the University of Ulster, concerns the place-names of Derry City, which is the topic of his recent book, ‘The Place-Names of Derry City’. The townland names of the Parishes of Templemore and Glendermott are discussed in detail in this publication, names which show the rich Gaelic and ecclesiastical history of the city.

Religious Shift in the traditions of Ireland, Armenia and Sri Lanka

Dr Fomin is a Senior Lecturer at Ulster University. An expert in folklore, he was the primary investigator on the ‘Stories of the Sea’ project.

Dr Mac Cathmhaoil is a Lecturer in Irish Language at Ulster University. He is currently engaged in research on Irish language manuscripts and has published a book on the poet and scribe, Muiris Ó Gormáin.

Voices of the Islands - Voices of Scotland and Ireland

Dr Ó Dónaill is a Lecturer in Irish Language at Ulster University. He is engaged in research on the use of technology in language acquisition and has current projects in Ireland and Scotland.

A very basic introduction to the Cornish language, delivered by John Ellery Gillingham.

The Pan Celtic Festival Club kicks off every year with a display of the finest in Irish culture and tradition.

This event will exhibit the high calibre of traditional musicians and dancers in Derry and the North West. Expect singing, dancing and plenty of high-powered traditional music.

Each night of the festival, a different nation will host an evening displaying the very best of their Celtic traditions. There will be singing, dancing, loads of great tunes and plenty of craic!

For the final night of the Festival Club, the Scottish visitors entertain festival goers with the very best in Gaelic culture.

The Welsh festival club will feature choir performances, harpists, solo singers and costumed dancers.

I’m With Her is the most anticipated folk collaboration of 2015. Sara Watkins, a singer-songwriter and fiddler from California is a founding member of the progressive bluegrass group Nickel Creek. Sarah Jarosz, who fits comfortably where contemporary folk, Americana and roots music intersect, has long been embraced for the depth and maturity of her songwriting, her pure and nuanced vocals, and her instrumental mastery. Boston born Aoife O’Donovan began her career as lead singer and songwriter of Crooked Still, which became one of the world’s most acclaimed progressive string groups over the past decade.

Tá an Gypsy Folk Klub ar na hoícheanta ceoil áitiúla is mó clú agus tá lúcháir ar Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin a bheith mar óstach. Bíonn meascán mearaí de cheol tíre agus ceol domhanda ag gach imeacht, curtha i láthair ag an ghrúpa iomráiteach ó Dhoire Balkan Alien Sound.

Is grúpa iad Balkan Alien Sound a mheascann stíleanna Éireannacha, Klezmer, Giofógacha agus Balcánacha chun ceol leithleach agus tógálach a chruthú, ag seasamh amach mar cheannródaithe cheol an domhain in Éireann.

Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin are delighted to be the new host venue of one of the local music scene’s most popular nights: the Gypsy Folk Klub. Each event plays host to an eclectic mix of folk and world music acts and is curated by the popular Derry-based band Balkan Alien Sound.

Balkan Alien Sound are a high octane, dance driven, folk fusion outfit that offer a mix of Irish, Klezmer, Gypsy and Balkan styles to create distinctive and infectious music, setting them apart as world music trail blazers in Ireland.

Is tionscadal amhránaíochta traidisiúnta é an Birdsong Project a chum agus a léirigh Aileen Lambert agus Michael Fortune. Bunaítear an tionscadal ar bhailiúchán agus léiriú na n-amhrán, ón traidisiún Éireannach, ina bhfuil éin nó ceiliúr éan luaite. Léireofar an ceiliúr éan ag ceolchoirmeacha i gcúige Uladh, cúige Laighean, cúige Mumhan, cúige Chonnacht agus ceolchoirm amháin i mBaile Átha Cliath. I measc na gceoltóirí ó Chúige Uladh beidh John Tunney, Brigid Tunney, Jim MacFarland, Jackie Boyce, Grace Toland, Rita Gallagher agus Maurice Leyden.

The Bird Song Project is a traditional song project which was devised and produced by Aileen Lambert and Michael Fortune. The project is based around the collection and performance of songs, from within the Irish tradition, which feature or reference birds or birdsong. The bird songs will be performed at five concerts which will take place in the four provinces of Ulster, Leinster, Munster and Connaught with a fifth concert in Dublin. The Ulster singers will include: John Tunney, Brigid Tunney, Jim MacFarland, Jackie Boyce, Grace Toland, Rita Gallagher and Maurice Leyden.
