Que veut-on dire parmusique celtique ?

What does “CelticMusic” mean anyway?

There are many possible interpretations of whatdefines Celtic music. However, the guiding

principle of this Festival is that the music musthave its source in the traditions of one

of the eight Celtic “nations” of Europe,i.e., Ireland, Scotland, Brittany, Wales,Isle of Man, Cornwall, Galicia or Asturias.

The music cannot easily be categorizedbecause it goes from the very tradi -

tional to the very contemporary. Itcovers many styles along the way such as

jazz, world, folk, fusion, and of course, alltypes of traditional music including Québécois,

Americana, Gaelic singing, mouth music, traditionalpiping, fiddle and piano duos, etc.

The instruments one usually associates with Celticmusic are the fiddle, the bagpipes, the harp, the fluteand tinwhistle, the accordeon, various percussioninstruments such as the bodhrán, bones and feet, and of course, the human voice. However, many otherinstruments come into play such as the piano, guitar,mandolin, bombarde, Irish bouzouki, cello, bass anddrums, to name just a few.

On peut définir la musique celtique de bien desfaçons. Pour être incluse dans ce Festival, il faut

que la musique ait son origine dans les traditionsd’une des 8 « nations » celtiques d’Europe,soit l’Irlande, l’Écosse, la Bretagne, le paysde Galles, l’Île de Man, la Cornouailles,la Galice et les Asturies.

Il est difficile de classer une musiquequi va du très traditionnel au trèscontemporain. La musique celtiqueinclut bien des styles comme le jazz, lamusique du monde, le folk, la musiquefusion et, bien entendu, tous les types demusique traditionnelle comme le trad québécois,l’americana, le chant gaélique, la turlute, la cornemusetraditionnelle, et les duos violoneux et pianiste.

Les instruments généralement associés à la musiqueceltique sont le violon, la cornemuse, la harpe, la flûte et le flageolet, l’accordéon, divers instruments depercussion comme le bodhran, les osselets et les pieds,et, bien entendu, la voix humaine. D’autres instrumentss’ajoutent à la liste comme le piano, la guitare, la mandoline, la bombarde, le bouzouki irlandais, le violoncelle, la basse et la batterie.
