Introduction
Congratulations on your place at the University of Brighton, and thank you for booking into the Orientation
Programme!
This handbook has details of:
where the Orientation Programme will be held
what it will include
arrangements for temporary accommodation for the week
support for students who need assistance looking for somewhere permanent to live
where we are and how to get here
the airport meet and greet service (if booked) – where to go when you get to the airport and what to do if
there are any problems.
Please do take the time to read this handbook carefully. Please make sure that you print a copy of the
Arrivals Information pages to take with you in your hand luggage for reference, particularly if you are using the Airport Meet and Greet Service.
The University of Brighton Orientation Programme is based on the Moulsecoomb Campus for all students,
regardless of whether they will be studying at a different campus in Brighton or Eastbourne once term starts. There
is information on what will take place during the Orientation Programme in the Activities and Events section of this
handbook. Here is a brief summary:
Tuesday 17 September is arrivals day. Students will arrive, register on the Orientation Programme and
move into temporary orientation accommodation (if required).
Wednesday 18 September. All students will be based on the Moulsecoomb campus in the morning,
where there will be a series of talks and information sessions. In the afternoon you will go with your Student
Ambassadors on a tour of Brighton city centre, which will end with a traditional English afternoon tea party.
Thursday 19 September. All students will attend talks and activities mainly on the Moulsecoomb campus.
There will be campus tours in the afternoon for all Brighton based students. In the evening there will be
some optional social activities for all students, which will be based on the Moulsecoomb campus.
Friday 20 September. All students will check out of their temporary accommodation today by 09:00hrs.
Brighton based students will attend in-person stage 2 enrolment (where you will enrol on your course and
collect your Uni Card). Eastbourne based students will travel by coach to that campus. There will be a
welcome lunch, where you can meet some key staff and tour the campus. After that, you will be able to
move into your permanent accommodation.
If you have a query about the programme which is not answered by the information in this handbook, please do
contact the Orientation team.
We are looking forward to meeting you in person.

Transport in Brighton
Buses: Brighton has frequent buses that travel all over the city. The buses will not automatically stop at all
bus stops so when you see the bus you wish to use approaching you must hold your arm out to signal to
the driver that you wish them to stop and let you on. You must always enter the bus through the doors by
the driver but some buses have doors at the back too, for you to exit from.
For up to date routes and timetables go to www.buses.co.uk
Trains: The main station is Brighton, on Queens Road. There are stations at Moulsecoomb and Falmer
too as well as other locations across the city. Timetables can be found at www.nationalrail.co.uk
To and from the Moulsecoomb campus
The 24, 25, 25x, 28, 29, and 49 buses travel to/from a stop opposite the Cockcroft Building as well as
to/from the town centre of Brighton.
Alternatively, Moulsecoomb train station, situated behind the Huxley Building on the Moulsecoomb campus, is just two stops from Brighton station.
To/from the Falmer campus
The 25 buses travel to/from a stop opposite Ringmer House on the Falmer campus and pass the
Moulsecoomb campus on the way. The 25 goes to Portslade (West Hove) via the town centre.
The 25x travels from a stop outside Falmer Station to Portslade (West Hove) via the town centre. It is an
express service, so has limited stops. It stops opposite the Cockcroft Building at the Moulsecoomb
campus.
Alternatively, Falmer train station is just three stops from Brighton station and stops at Moulsecoomb
station on the way to and from Brighton main station. The station is situated below the playing fields.
25
To/from the Grand Parade campus/ Phoenix Halls of Residence
The campus is situated in the town centre and near Brighton train station. The 25 and 25x buses travel
from opposite St. Peter’s church near the campus to the Moulsecoomb. The 25 stops at the University of
Brighton campus. The 25x is an express service, so has limited stops. It does not stop at the Brighton
campus, but instead at the University of Sussex campus opposite and then again outside Falmer station.
You can then walk to the Brighton campus from either point.
To/from Varley Park
Varley is situated between the Moulsecoomb and Falmer campuses. The number 24 bus runs regularly from
Brighton city centre along the Lewes Road and stops approximately 50m from the Varley Park entrance.
From the Centre of Town
The 24, 25, 25x, 28, 29 and 49, buses travel to/from a stop opposite the Cockcroft Building as well as
to/from the town centre of Brighton. The 25x is an express service, so has limited stops. It stops opposite
outside Falmer stations, and the Cockcroft Building at the Moulsecoomb campus, and travels to Portslade
(West Hove) via the city centre.
Alternatively, Moulsecoomb train station, situated behind the Huxley Building on the Moulsecoomb
campus, is just two stops from Brighton station.
Buying a Bus Ticket
You can buy a bus ticket from the driver when you get on the bus using cash or a contactless credit or debit
card. If you prefer, you can use the Brighton buses app to buy an e-ticket.
If you only want to make one journey, you should by an adult ‘single’ to the place you are going. If you are
making more than one journey, the cheapest option is to buy a ‘city Saver’ ticket, which is £5.00 on the bus
or £4.50 on the app. This will give you unlimited bus travel within Brighton and Hove for 24 hours. It does
26
not include night buses, or City Sightseeing buses, so you may wish to by a ‘network Saver’ ticket instead if
you will be using either.
Once you have registered in person on your course and have your Uni Card (student identity card) you will
be able to buy a discounted student bus pass or ticket for travel on Brighton Buses.
For more information see http://www.buses.co.uk/
Travelling in the Evening
The 25 bus runs a good service during the night, but in the interests of safety we recommend you take a taxi
home if you are returning alone. All taxis in Brighton and Hove are registered with the local council, and all
drivers should have their identity badge on display at the front of the taxi. You can get a taxi from various
points in the city centre, and you can also hail a taxi by standing on the side of the pavement (please do not
stand in the road) and putting out your arm. You can also call a taxi to collect you from where you are.
Some local taxi numbers are:
Streamline Taxis 01273 202020 or 01273 747474
City Cabs 01273 205205
When you are out in the evening please try to remember the following points:
Avoid walking home on your own. Try to stay with a group of friends.
Try to stick to well lit, busy streets.
Be alert when using a mobile phone and do not walk along with earphones in.
Don’t carry large amounts of cash with you and be alert when using ATMs.
These points and more will also be covered in the Safety Talk on Thursday.
Banks and Cash Machines (ATMs)
Santander bank is located in the mezzanine level of the Cockcroft Building. They have an ATM outside
their office.
There are ATMs along the Lewes Road in the following places:
BP Connect petrol station
Sainsbury’s supermarket
The Cooperative Food Store
All the major banks can be found in the town centre. There will be a list of banks in the Brighton and
Eastbourne area in your welcome packs in the section on opening a UK bank account.
At the start of term it can take several weeks to open a bank account, as the main banks are very busy at
this time. Make sure you can use your credit or debit card in the UK.
Please make sure you have notified your bank back home to tell them you are coming to the UK, and to make sure you are able to us your card to withdraw money and make contactless payments in the UK.
