Attached please find the half year report requested as well as the list of WG1 members. As there have only been slight changes to my report prepared for the Yearbook of Medical Informatics 1996, 1 have taken this report and have added som additional comments at the beginning. I will bring 80 copies of this report to the next meeting of the General Assembly. Please let me report about two other Issues of WG1 . As you know, Wendy Swinkels and I were preparing a first proposal for a 6th IMIA WG1 conference on health and medical Informatics education as satellite conference following the Health Informatics 97 Conference of HISA and APAMI on August 11-13 1997 at Sidney, Australia. We have the possibility to run the working conference at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences in Newcastle, a lovely city about 100 miles north of Sidney. A proposal is also attatched. It will be distributed on our next WG1 meeting on Monday, August 19th. A first SPC meeting Is also planned on this Monday. I would like to report about this conference on the IMIA general assembly, preferably on Friday, as I cannot attend the assembly on Saturday. We got a lot of encouragement to prepare such a conference, besides from you e.g. from IMIA president Otto Rienhorf, IMIA past president Marion Ball and APAMI president K.C. Lun. As I had no other possibility to have the WG1 and the SPC meeting during MIE, it is my hope that we can have an approval by the general assembly afterwards. The next topic is, that the name of IMIA WG1 (Information Science and Medical Education) does, in my opinion, no more fit appropriately to the objectives of WG1 (cf. the WG1 description for the Yearbook 96). ( will discuss on the next WG1 meeting, whether we should propose to the IM1A General Assembly to rename WG1. My proposal for an appropriate name of WG1 is: Health and Medical Informatics Education. I also would like to raise this topic on the general assembly on Friday, depending on the votes of the WG1 members on our meeting on August 19th. I am very much hoping that you as the WG1 representative of Switzerland will have the time to come to the WG1 meeting on August 19th. Otherwise I will meet you on Thursday, August 22nd, on the meeting of the IMiA working group and special interest group chairs and I will then ask for yor advice. I am very much looking forward to meet you at Copenhagen. Yours sincerely, Enclosures: half year report, WG1 member list, proposal for 6th WG1 conference 22/07 '96 08:?9 TX/RX 40Q7 P.001

Especially weshould discuss the structure of the IMIA WG1 database on health andmedical informatics programs and decide about further steps. We shouldalso discuss, whether the 'call for participation' should be modified andwhether it should be submitted to medical informatics journals.

6 IMIA WG1 working conference 1997 at Melbourne, AustraliaWendy Swinkels and I are currently preparing a proposal for a workingconference on health and medical informatics education as satelliteconference, following the Health Informatics 97 Conference of HISA and

APAMIon August 11-13 1997 at Sidney Australia. We would have the possibility

to runthe working conference at the Faculty of Medicineand Health Sciences in Newcastle, a lovely city about 100 milesnorth of Sidney. A proposal will be distributed on our meeting. In parallel I am also in contact with the IMIA board.

7 Name of IMIA WG1The name of IMIA WG1 (Information Science and Medical Education) does, in

myopinion, no more fit appropriately to the objectives of WG1 (cf. the WG1description for the Yearbook 96). I would like to discuss with you,

whether we
