Fall 2015 Issue 92 Volume 23 Number 4

Those of us who made it down toMuhlenberg County for the lastweekend in September were treatedwith a full 3 days of guitar pickingevents. Friday night was the Hall ofFame induction ceremonies where weadded some great pickers to the Halland recognized others for theirthumbpicking support andpromotion. The annual Home of theLegends Thumbpicking GuitarContest was held on Saturdayfollowed by an evening concert. Finally, Sunday was planned to be"Pickin in the Park" but the weatherwas "iffy" and it was moved indoorsto the Merle Travis Music Center. That's a busy weekend. And I had tocarve out a few hours on Saturday toslip into a class reunion luncheon.Busy, busy, busy.

We arrived at the Merle TravisMusic Center on Friday shortly afterthe doors opened and in time to hearthe pre-show picking from Paul

Moseley and friends. Paul got alittle help from several pickersincluding his cousin Larry Stone and

even Palmer Moore slipped out onstage for a few tunes. Paul wasplaying as smoothly as ever. He hasa lot of Chet's hands and even has his

laid back easy going demeanor whenhe plays.

The Hall of Fame inductionsinclude recognizing pickers, supporting musicians, supportingfans, recording of the year and a fewspecial presidential awards. See thesidebar for the complete list ofawards and inductions on page 3.

The inductions were followed bya special premiere showing of a newKET produced special entitled"Merle Travis: Guitar Man". other musicians talking aboutTravis and his influence as well asclips of Travis that we had not seenbefore. After the premiere, itsproducer, Tom Thurman, took thestage in Travis’ Nudie suit andtalked briefly about the making if itand answered questions from theaudience. It was a great endfor the Friday eveninginduction ceremony.

Saturday morning thecontest began with all thecontestants registering anddrawing picking ordersometime around 9 AM. Thecontest began at 10 AM.There were about 18 in thecontests and it takes allmorning and about half theafternoon to get through thepicking categories and 2 rounds ofpicking. There has been a juniordivision but this year there were noentries so the prize planned for itwas added to the regular roundawards. Evan Twitty won theTraditional Thumbpicking division,Alonzo Pennington won theContemporary Thumbpickingdivision and the GrandChampionship. Alonzo playedCannonball Rag in the play-offround for Grand Champion and Idon't think there was a person inthe building who could havechallenged him. Put down thescorecards and get out the crown. After all, when I went to my firstMuhlenberg picking event in 1995,I saw Alonzo playing it when hewas having more trouble reachingaround a guitar twice his size thanplaying those Travis choke chords.See the sidebar for all of the contestresults. Notice how the contestdrew folks from all over the

country. This contest is not likeWinfield or the growing IndianaFingerstyle Contest in that itconcentrates on thumbpicking. Infact, one division must be Chet orTravis style strong alternatingthumb traditional tunes. Thatcuts out a lot of slap, tap andpyrotechnics guitarists that have

started to dominate some of theother contests and it limits thenumber of contestants in theInternational Home of theLegends thumbpicking contest tosome degree. It was good to seethe participation we had and thediversity of their home towns.

After the contest picking, there is a break for everyone tosneak a bite of dinner before theevening show. The doors re-opened at 5:30 and the nightperformance began with a bit ofpicking from the contest winners.Alonzo could not be present dueto a prior musical engagement butEvan played his new GretschTennessee Rose guitar for us andsang. I really think Evan's strongsuit is playing those old TravisFolk Songs of the Hills tunes.

Next was a set from Dr. JohnKnowles who has become such apart of our events in MuhlenbergCounty. So often we get to hear

a detailed story about Chet orLenny Breau, a recording session,an idea for a song that turned intoa Chet standard. We appreciateJohn's help with our programs andparticipation and experience. Noone says it better than John. Andhe let his Kirk Sands nylon stringdo some of the talking. Michael

Moseley on sound dialed himin nicely and he played his owncompositions inspired by tripsto Muhlenberg County calledDrakesboro Saturday Nightand Central City Flyer. Heplayed one that he loves andhas so many arrangements, intros and outros that heprobably has trouble selectedone - the Tennessee Waltz. After all of the eveningperformances one of the

visitors was complimenting theshow and said that the song thatstood out and impressed him mostwas Tennessee Waltz. And thewinner is...

The Endless Road StringQuartet was re-assembled for theevent now that Joanna Binford hasmoved to Virginia Beach and TinaSimpson moved to Nashvilleleaving Julie Lastinger and RebeccaKiekenapp in Lexington. They areso great. They now have hugenotebooks of scores of music forplaying with fingerpickers. Eachmusician has his own section withtheir songs. I'm proud to have myown sandwiched in with TommyEmmanuel, Pat Kirtley, JohnKnowles, Richard Smith, ThomBresh and on. It's good to have arhythm guitar back up but it'samazing to have 4 sets of stringsplaying rich bass lines and movingharmonies. The ERS Quartet

performed with several of thepickers through the evening.

John invited one of his "youngthumbs", Kirby Easler to play. Shehad played in the contest earlier inthe contemporary division andcame in second. She is working ona CD of her own arrangements ofBilly Joel songs and played severalof them in her set.

Pat Kirtley took the stage nextand played a great set with a mix ofhis own compositions and coverarrangements. My introduction tofingerstyle guitar was hearing Pat’sKentucky Guitar after he won theFinger Picked Guitar championshipin Winfield, KS. I still love thosegreat standard tunes pickedfingerstyle and many with opentunings that give it that distinctivesound. Pat has been teachingParker Hasting using Skype overthe internet and you can hear hisinfluence in Parkers new CD.Great job picking and teaching Pat.

As last year's Grand Champion,Parker Hasting followed andplayed a full set. He did severaltunes with the strings including hisown tune Grandma's House. Anice tune full of Tommy Emmanuel

like licks and Pat Kirtley chordvoicings. You are what you eat.He played his own arrangementsof Smile and Remember. Parkercouldn't make it to Muhlenberg onFriday night because he wasplaying again for MichaelJonathan's Woodsongs event nearKnoxville. He is playing all of thetime. He played for the KyLegislative session opening, theEKU presidential inauguralceremony, Woodsongs RadioProgram and many others. He isgetting better and better and at afrantic pace. One day he noticedthe plaque in my Taylor guitarfrom winning it in Muhlenberg in2000. He said, "that's when I wasborn". Great! I've learned a fewmore tunes, picked up trick ortwo while he's learned walking, talking, reading, writing, ANDthumbpicking. So it's no surpriseto us that he was votedThumbpicker of the Year for hisgrowing skills and being athumbpicking ambassador to theregion and beyond. It waspresented to him on stage after hisperformance. We weren'tsurprised but he certainly was.

They say never follow actswith animals or children. And Ihad to follow Parker. I mentionedthat problem to someonebackstage and they said but youhave experience on your side thathe didn't have. So I needed to betold I was old again just beforestepping out on stage? I played adity I wrote called "Funky andWarm" with some of Windy andWarm's chords, a different melodyand a touch of funk. The stringsjoined me in another tune I wrotecalled It's Raining. Thensurprising everyone, I sang ChinaBlue, a tune I learned from a

Loren Barringer and MarkMasengarb CD. I decided to do itafter hearing it at CAAS thissummer with the string partsadded. Then I had to do ClassicalGas that I love to play with thestrings. So much power in theirparts.

There was a short breakbefore the special EverlyBrothers Tribute concert withJeff Boyet and Matt Newton. They sang the parts of Don(Jeff) and Phil (Matt) and theband was made up of localmusicians with Joe Hudson andPaul Moseley on guitars. Aswe've seen before, Joe had workedon getting those little guitar licksjust right to sound like the originalrecordings. Boyet and Newtonfirst sang together in the 1998production of Bye Bye Love at thehistoric Ryman Auditorium afterhaving been select from anaudition pool of hundreds. Theyplayed the Everly Brothersfavorites and tossed in few thatwere less familiar to even the

Muhlenberg fans. They playedKentucky which is a hard songfor me to find when to come inon the line following Kentucky.A beautiful tune with greatharmonies. They played All I

Have To Do Is Dream, Let It BeMe, Bye Bye Love, Claudet, Rain(With the Strings), Walk RightBack and of course Wake UpLittle Susie.

I heard some complaintsabout not having enough straightup thumbpicking for the eveningconcert. But I heard many morecomments praising the program.

Sunday afternoon has alwaysbeen an open stage for pickers to

take turns and show off a little.Marilyn Kirtley organized a lunchout at the Country Plantation andmany of the out of town visitorsjoined in. What a meal.Everything was prepared perfectly

and pipping hot buffet style. Itried to put the tiniest spoon ofeach of the items on my plate butit wouldn't fit. So many choicesand all good. We slammed thebuffet then went outside forpictures and goodbyes for some.Paul Yandell's family and Dr.Mark Pritcher and Carol allheaded home since we werepretty far south in the countyand already on the way back to

Nashville and Knoxville for them.We returned to the Merle

Travis Center where the pickinghad already begun and those withenough energy and not too muchlunch joined in. I still had to getpacked up and head back toLexington so I didn't stay at theCenter too long before moving on.It was a busy weekend full of greatmusic, wonderful picking andvisiting with friends.

If you've been a KTPC newsletterreader for a while you've read aboutWoodsongs Old time Radio Hourperformances in past issues. I reallyappreciate what host Michael Jonathanhas done in bringing live music toLexington weekly andproviding a stage for manyartist outside the mainstreammusic machine. The shows aretaped each Monday evening atthe Lexington Lyric Theatre &Cultural Center in downtownLexington. It is streamed liveonline and broadcast to over350 radio stations around theworld. The videos are archivedand available for viewing lateron-line. The program also airson KET TV. That's greatcoverage.

Michael has recently added afeature showcasing young musicianseach week in a regular “WoodSongsKids” segment. We have been wellrepresented with performances bythumbpickers Evan Twitty and ParkerHastings. There have been manyothers and many are bluegrass and folkas well. If you know a youngster, 6-16years old, who you think should be onthe show, you all can apply online bysubmitting a simple 2-minute videoclip. It's a nice addition to the showand generally is limited to a shortintroduction and one quick song.

But on October 26th Woodsongshad a whole show dedicated to theWoodSongs Kids. We saw that Parkerwas one of the "Kids" to be featuredagain so we reserved a couple of seats.

It turns out we didn't need tobecause Parker's Mom and Dad sent usa note inviting us to join them andseveral other of their and our friendsfrom Richmond. They were arrivingearly for Parker's sound check andgoing to claim a few seats. It's good toknow the stars.

Michael opened as usual with asong and introductory words about the

WoodSongs Kids then introducedParker first. He noted that Parker hadreceived the National Thumb PickersHall of Fame Horizon Award lastyear and this year was selected asThumbpicker of the Year. Jonathan

also noted that it had been held byTommy Emmanuel for the last fewyears and that says a lot. Parkerplayed and sang Kentucky (and itmeans Paradise). Parker's hot off thepresses CD was available atWoodsongs and Parker was in thelobby after the show receivingenthusiastic guests, signingautographs and peddling CDs.Something that may become acommon scene for Parker. You guysmust pick one up at the ChristmasParty Dec 12th. It is excellent.Recorded at Richard Smith's studio inNashville, it is filled with quite avariety of musical styles, allperformed and produced beautifully.A couple of songs are recorded with aband of guitars, bass, drums andkeyboards. Richard may be easinginto some of Chet's qualities in that hehas a growing league of musicians hecan call on for recording at his studio. He gathered Sam Bush's band rhythmsection for Parker's CD. You gottahear Jerry Reed's Lightning Rod withthe band. Also Parker's own tunes, afingerstyle tune called Grandma'sHouse full of hints of Pat Kirtley and

Tommy Emmanuel, two of histeachers and a Bossa Nova tune calledSalida Del Sol. I'm so proud of him,his speed of learning, his steady thumband love of thumbpicking. We atKTPC can all be proud of him since he

has attended several of ourmeetings and picked up loadsof tricks. He's a bit like a pickpocket, you never even knowyou've been ripped off. Justplay a tune and he's nabbing theparts he likes. Sponge.

We also heard fromChristina Joneikas, young ladyof 14 years from Sherve, Ohiowho played banjo and a crossbetween a dulcimer and banjo. An 8 year old kid called simplyFiddlin' John tore into a coupleof fiddle tunes. In a bit of a

different take, Woodsongs had a SteelDrum Academy of middle school agekids who played Stevie Wonder andMichael Jackson songs on the steeldrums. A Lexington school musicteacher came up with the idea andrecruited a bunch of kids, made thedrums and arranged a bunch of tunesthat the students liked. It was a niceinterlude and change of pace.

We are lucky to have Woodsongsright here in Lexington, but rememberthe music program is available aroundthe world on radio, online webcastingas well as archived online for viewingat any time. It’s great to see thepromotion of kids playing fingerstyleand thumbpicking music. Thanks toWoodsongs for their special effort.

Also, we should thank CAAS andtheir recognition of youngsters withtheir “Young Thumbs” program. Youcan follow them online at:https://www.facebook.com/YoungThumbs/. As you read this newsletteryou’ll see that we aren’t getting anyyounger and we need to nurture thisgroup of young pickers who have, forsome reason, gravitated tothumbpicking and fingerstyle guitar.

Tommy Emmanuel at the Grand Ole Opryby Scott Taylor

Guess who played at the GrandOle Opry. The title was a clue. For a change, Tommy played at theOpry and was actually scheduledahead of time, got on the billingand everthing. Before he has beena guest of another artist and quiteshort notice.

We made our plans to go butdidn't buy tickets in advance. Wearrived in Nashville early sowe could make our traditionalJack's BBQ dinner stopbefore going on to"Opryland". It was kind ofnice just going out the Brileyto the Opry instead of ourusual drive into the belly ofthe beast ... downtownNashville. It was a niceevening to hang around theOpry area, check out the giftshop and of course get ourtickets. It was almost soldout and hard to find two seatstogether. We sat with ourbacks against the wall in the lastrow and the highest seats around.I felt like I was going to a UKBasketball game and I would beable to see the plays develop. Buteven those seats were good. TheOpry theater has a great soundsystem with much of it up at theceiling level and above the stage aswell as huge TV screens on eachside of the stage. So maybe Icould call the fouls after all.

The reason it was sold out waseither Tommy or this guy namedDierks Bentley. Anyway theevening opened with Larry Gatlin& The Gatlin Brothers singing acouple of their hits including ofcourse, All the Gold. What asound. They began singing and

everyone kicked in at once and itwas balanced great. How dothey do it? As Doyle Dykes said, there's no crying in baseball andthere are no sound checks at theGrand Ole Opry.

We heard from The CadillacThree and Rainey Qualley beforeTommy was introduced. Tommyopened with Traveling Clothes

and the sound was excellent. The bottom kicked and the highswere clear. And plenty ofvolume as is needed for hisdynamic acoustic guitar music.Often venues are ready forelectric bands but have a timeadjusting to a single guitar. Butnot the Grand Ole Opry thisnight. He played Chet's ElVaquero where he plays bothparts at once and explained whathe was going to do ahead oftime. The audience got it. Heplayed another Chet recordedtune One Mint Julep with allTommy's deviations and jams. His dual string bends are so coolin that one.

He took a bow and headed

off the stage only to be stopped bythe host at his podium. He spokequietly to Tommy then announcedthat he had graciously agreed toplay another tune. Exxxceeellent!Since he had played one of his andtwo of Chet's, it was time forTravis and Nine Pound Hammer. He killed it. The place erupted instanding ovation at the end. Only

time I'd seen them up allnight. Tommy impressed alot of people that night andthumbpicking solo guitarwent up a notch as well.

Following Tommy, therewas a short intermission. Then in the second half BillAnderson, Dailey & Vincentand Dierks Bentley played.

We met up with Tommyafter the show and caught upon his travels and he caughtup on the Muhlenbergpicking weekend and contest.I told him he had the best

sound I've heard at the Opry andhe confessed that his sound man,Steve Law, had called the Oprysound man and asked that he notcut back the bass and give it plentyof volume. It worked. It wasgreat and he got a tremendousresponse. I believe he'll be backagain.

We said our goodbyes and hitthe road back to Lexington in anasty rain coupled withconstruction lane closures and thetypical I-65 truck traffic. Lookslike the fun part of the trip wasover. But, we had a great time inNashville as usual, saw a greatTommy show and got to spend afew minutes with Tommy. One ofthose win, win, win things.

We've lost another great one.Freddie Russell was s fine guitar pickerbut an even finer gentleman. His losswas so sudden that it's hard to put it inperspective. Freddie went into thehospital a few weeks before he passedaway Nov. 5 at Bradford HeightsHealth and Rehabilitation Center inHopkinsville. Freddie was a long timeclub member, a regular at all of theMuhlenberg County picking events andthe organizer of the Odell Martinannual picking event. Freddie was only68 at his passing.

Visitation was on Sunday atHughart, Beard and Giles FuneralHome in Hopkinsville, KY. I arrivedintentionally a little late hoping thecrowd would have subsided by then. But it was one of the largest funeralvisitations I have ever attended due tothe fact that Freddie was so loved andrespected in his community. The linewas still an hour or more long and itwound through the funeral homefolding back on itself allowing you tosee many of the visitors. To the side ofthe viewing in a separate room, EddiePennington and Paul Moseley werepicking. Over the visitation period Iwas there, several pickers took a turnpicking one for Freddie: AlonzoPennington, Larry Stone, ParkerHastings, Evan Twitty, David Duncan.I played I'll See You in My Dreams.

On Monday, the services wereconducted by Rev. Rodney Skipworth.Rodney said that he had mentioned toFreddie once that he had tried to learn a

little guitar but didn't get very far. Then one day there was a knock at hisdoor and there stood Freddie with aguitar and amp in hand. He had cometo play a little but mostly to give theguitar and amp to him so he couldlearn to play. That's Freddie, one ofthe kindest gentlemen you'll ever meet.Several of us noticed that his pictureat the funeral home didn't lookright....he wasn't smiling. I lookedlater at my photos and can't find onewithout him smiling that big smile ofhis. Palmer Moore said "The onlytime he lost that infamous smile waswhen your answer to his "You thinkin'about selling that guitar?" was a littletoo high.

Here are some of the comments Ifound on the web from his friends:

"Thumbpicker extraordinaire, butmost importantly the kindest and mosthumble gentleman I have ever known.I learned so much on guitar byknowing him and also about life andhaving true friends. Rest in Peace myfriend! Till we meet again!"

Glen Browning

"This is just how he always was, happy and he made everybody elsehappy too. RIP Freddie J Russell."

Eddie Pennington

"We loved you not just for yourplaying but because of your beautifulsoul. Take your place amongst thegreats. They are as happy to receiveyou as we are sad to lose you. Pick afew with Mose, Ike, Merle, Chet,Jerry .......so many others waiting foryou." JT Oglesby

"Freddie was one of the firstpeople to inspire me to pick up aguitar. He was also the first to pushme in the direction of Country Musicand made me take music seriously andturned it into what I want to do therest of my life. He helped me along

every step of the way teaching me manyof the styles and licks I still use today. If not for him I'm certain I wouldn't bewhere I am today doing what I love inNashville. He was one of the nicestpeople I've ever met as well as one ofmy biggest supporters and I can'tbelieve he's gone. Rest in peaceFreddie Russell." William Bagby

"I have been blessed beyondcompare to have known such awonderful person. At the monthlyDrakesboro jams his antics neverceased to make all of the pickers andme laugh and smile. God BlessFreddie. For he blessed all of us withhis presence. Our thoughts and prayersgo out to his family. Rest in peace, myfriend. Rest in peace." Evan Twitty

"With just about everybody youknow and really like there are a fewthings that bug you about them. Thereare things that bug me about myself! That's normal human behavior.Freddie was one of the rare exceptions:There was nothing wrong with the man.Kind, talented, gracious, bright, warm, and always with a compliment. As apromoter of thumb style guitar, ofsorts, and organizer of the OhioFingerstyle Guitar Club I habituallywrite as though I am speaking for themembership of my club saying thingslike, "WE will surely miss Freddie."Well, folks, you are on your own withthis one... I will miss Freddie's warmwelcome to Muhlenberg County and hissmooooth style of playing guitar. Restin peace my friend." Palmer Moore

It won't be the same picking inMuhlenberg without Freddie. It will bequite some time for the Drakesboropicking circle to be able to meet and nothurt over the loss of one of the finestpickers and persons we know. AsMarilyn Kirtley put it "The circle isbroken"
