CANDIDATE BRIEF
Summary of positionThe International Hockey Federation’s first priority is to
govern the sport of hockey worldwide. In so doing it must
increase the participation, the profile and the financial
viability of the sport. A high priority for the FIH is to promote Hockey as a sport that has the
highest ethical standards, entertainment and competition value, so that
it remains a core sport on the Olympic programme.
The FIH is committed to the World anti-Doping Code.
The CEO is to provide leadership and management skills in effecting
a strategy to achieve the vision of the FIH and for hockey globally.
The FIH seeks a commercial leader, with significant experience and
understanding of revenue generation, fan engagement and innovative
content creation and distribution.
Reporting
The CEO reports directly to the FIH Executive Board (EB).
Working Relationship
A close ongoing relationship with the President and the HRR (Human
Resources and Remuneration) Panel. Also must maintain excellent
working partnerships with all key FIH stakeholders and FIH staff
Responsibilities10 Year Strategy: The Hockey Revolution
• Provide inspiring leadership to the global hockey community,
ensuring FIH and Hockey is well regarded in the International
sporting community.
• Provide leadership to develop and continually reinforce the
Vision (Strategic Direction), Mission (Purpose) and Values
(Culture) of the organisation
• Develop, articulate and deliver the vision for the first Hockey
Pro League.
• Through active engagement with key stakeholders, develop
and annually review a Rolling Strategic Plan to maximise value
and recommend the Plan to the Board for input, review and
approval.
• Implement the Rolling Strategic Plan and report to the Board
on progress and agreed strategic, key performance indicators.
• Review trends and opportunities in society generally and
create delivery models that recognise these opportunities to
encourage membership and participation growth.
ResponsibilitiesFinancial Management
• Act in the best interests of the FIH within the
ethics and code of conduct expected in the
Olympic movement.
• Ensure that nothing is done, or authorized to
be done, that could in any way cause financial
harm or threaten the FIH’s financial integrity.
• Optimize both the short and long-term
financial performance of the FIH.
• Play a full part in enabling the EB to arrive
at balanced and objective decisions in the
performance of its agreed role and functions.
• Share joint-signature responsibility with the
President.
• Ensure the Risk and compliance framework
approved by the Board is implemented
• Report to the Board on the management of
risks as required by the Risk Management
Policy.
• Ensure the accuracy, completeness, integrity
and disclosure of the organisation’s financial
statements through appropriate policies,
procedures and internal controls.
• Ensure the organisation complies with all
regulatory and government requirements.
• Provide any required regulatory or
government assurances regarding the
organisation and its activities.
• Ensure appropriate operational policies and
procedures are developed, implemented and
maintained.
ResponsibilitiesGovernance Obligations
Ensure the objectives of the FIH, as agreed by the EB, are fully and
promptly carried out to:
• Ensure the EB is kept fully informed in the manner and
frequency it requires to achieve the objectives
• Attend all EB meetings and Congresses as a participating
member of the EB
• Ensure presentation to the EB for approval proposals for all
major expenditure exceeding authority and budget limits
• Works with the EB to ensure the EB is continually improving its
Governance activities and policies and procedures
• Ensure that adequate systems are in place for monitoring
organizational performance and for adequate reporting to all
stakeholders
ResponsibilitiesMaintain Strategic Relationships
• Represent the FIH in a professional and irreproachable manner to
all stakeholders
• Manage relationships with the IOC, ASOIF and similar organisations
• Enhance the relationship with National Associations and
Continental Federations
• Ensure sponsorship relationships are grown and managed in
accordance with the strategy
• Ensure that all staff and others who represent the FIH do so in a
professional manner
ResponsibilitiesOperational Management
• Uphold and strengthen the integrity
of hockey, ensure that the FIH is
accountable, transparent, and adheres to
the values as set out and defined by the
EB and the Olympic movement.
• Provide leadership and develop
all areas of the operation, which
includes Performance, Operations
and Development (in total approx. 35
employees)
• Develop and retain a senior management
team with appropriate skills and
experience to achieve FIH’s objectives.
• Establish annual operational plans
through which the strategic objectives
may be delivered.
• Increase sustainable sponsorship,
oversee the management of sponsor
relationships, build and consolidate
reserves and raise other revenues.
• In conjunction with the EB, set all
budgets and manage them efficiently.
• Ensure the implementation of effective
Human Resources practices throughout
the FIH.
• Regularly review the structure of the
organization and make recommendations
to the EB for changes as necessary. (ie)
conducting an organizational audit
• Ensure policies and provisions are in place
to protect the organization and staff from
potential liabilities and risks
• Comply and review policies and
procedures
Responsibilities Hockey
• Initiate and monitor all aspects of the sport of hockey worldwide to
ensure the principles of dignity, integrity and good governance, within
the framework of the Olympic Games and of events organized or
sanctioned by FIH
• Ensure management of FIH events as successful commercial entities
and attractive sporting events
• Supervise all FIH Committees and Panels ensuring good cross-
committee communication
Commercial, Broadcast, Media Rights
• Develop a coherent commercial strategy to drive revenue into FIH
through sponsorship, broadcast and media rights deals and content
distribution. Ensure that the FIH is at the cutting-edge in terms of
content, fan engagement and innovation.
• Effect the creation and monetisation of the first Hockey Pro League
– experience of previous management of leagues or major events an
advantage.
