THE INDIAN INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT KOZHIKODE(IIM KOZHIKODE)

The Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode was established in 1996 by theGovernment of India as the fifth IIM in the country, in collaboration with the stategovernment of Kerala. Spread over about 100 acres of land, the Institute is situatedon two hillocks, located amidst the scenic setting of the Western Ghats. The campusof IIMK was referred as the ̀ God`s own Campus` by former president of India, Dr.A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. The Institute has emerged as a centre of excellence inmanagement education and has earned a unique position for itself in this field.

The Institute is taking a leap forward in each of its key activities in a highly synergicmanner. The presence of regular visitors from institutions abroad gives an addedflavor to its various activities. Though young, it has earned a name for itself as apioneering, distinctive and efficient management Institution in India. The Institute,not content to rest on its laurels, aims to emerge as a fully integrated managementinstitution of higher learning in Pacific region, and is particularly known for a focuson global, cross-cultural issues as well as for the analytical rigour of its academicprogram. It, therefore, has the full range and breadth of academic activities, coveringresearch, teaching, training, consulting and intellectual infrastructure development.

IIMK KOCHI CAMPUSIIM Kozhikode has also set up its first satellite campus at Infopark in Kochi. Thecampus offers two-year part-time post graduate programme in management inaddition to several short and long-term management development programmes.The Kochi campus focuses on executive education with full-time, part time, short-term and specialised programmes for middle and senior management employeesto enhance and upgrade skills for better career prospects.

The international partnerships, which IIM Kozhikode enters into, also have a facultyexchange component, which are expected to be more comprehensive, and morerewarding than the usual students exchange agreement. Faculty members from IIMKozhikode may spend an academic term at partner institution, which may sendtheir academic staff in turn to IIM Kozhikode, under mutually agreed terms. Thegoal of such faculty exchange is not just to exchange course instructors, but is,rather, to develop research linkages of a continuing nature, facilitating access toinformation and data on a scale and of a qualitative nature, not possible otherwise.

LocationIIMK is located at Kozhikode in Kerala, the southernmost state of IndiaProgrammesPostgraduate Programme in Management (PGP) is the flagship programme ofIIMK. THE TWO-YEAR POSTGRADUATE PROGRAM IN MANAGEMENT

The two-year Postgraduate program (PGP, equivalent to MBA), is the flagshipprogram of the Institute. The programme attracts students from India and abroad,and draws many leading companies to the campus for the recruitment of programmegraduates. Admission to the program is through a rigorous nation-wide competitiveprocess, conducted by the IIMs. The admission process also includes personalinterviews. Current intake is 360 students per year. The intake number assures afavourable faculty-students and Institute resources per student ratio.

Unique characteristicsThe IIM Kozhikode Postgraduate Program in Management has some uniquecharacteristics, distinguishing it even within the IIM family of institutions. Besidesthe usual course elements, the program is oriented to inculcate an abidingcommitment to the wider society, which encompasses more than just the local ornational community in this era of globalization and international linkages. A socialdevelopment project, in which, students work with a non-governmental organizationfor the entire length of their stay at the Institute, is an integral part of the program.Another distinguishing feature of the program is the emphasis laid on combininguncompromising academic rigour with industry interaction and exposure to choices,problems and crises facing managers in actual, real world situations. A continuousprocess of evaluation of existing courses and the inclusion of new modules, oftendriven by the process of industry and social interaction, is another characteristic,which sets apart the postgraduate program of management at IIM Kozhikode.There is also considerable focus on management in a global scenario, with analysesof international business strategies in various sectors and a present awareness ofcross-cultural issues.

Summer InternshipThe programme also provides direct student links with industry and enhancementof application skills through projects undertaken for industry. The summer projectsof 8 to 10 weeks duration are done at the end of the first academic year.Continuous RevisionThe management development programmes offered by the institute provides anopportunity for students to update their knowledge so that the students are equippedwith the necessary skills to respond to the changing challenges posed by businessand industry.

STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAMThe first year is devoted to basic courses in all the management and management-related disciplines while the second year offers the opportunity of gaining breadthand depth in at least two major areas. Combinations in specialization such asFinance and Marketing, Information Technology & Marketing or Finance are currentlyin favour with students and industry recruiters. There is a compulsory summer projectof about two months duration, which may be undertaken with an employer anywherein India or abroad. Courses may vary in terms of the volume of content from 1.5 tothree credits. The maximum load of courses that may be taken in a single term isrestricted to 21 credits. Project-based courses, tailored to suit the needs of individualfaculty members and students, may also be offered. Instruction and evaluationusually combine several modes as classroom lectures, assignments, projects, termpapers, case studies, group discussions and role-plays.The academic year consists of three terms, scheduled as shown below. The datesgiven below are tentative. There may be marginal changes in the future toaccommodate changes in the incidence of holidays, Sundays etc.

Executive Postgraduate ProgrammeThe Executive Post Graduate Programme (EPGP) in Management at the IndianInstitute of Management Kozhikode (IIMK) offers a judicious blend of theory andpractice and is deliberately designed to be change-oriented. The EPGP inManagement is a two-year postgraduate diploma programme offered on aninteractive learning platform. A unique feature of the IIMK EPGP is its in-built concernto impart management education to working professionals seeking to upgradetheir knowledge and skills. FACULTYIIM Kozhikode has been put on the world map to a large extent due to the reputationearned by its faculty members due to their uncompromising academic excellence.The Institute faculty base comprises of guest, adjunct, visiting and regular faculty.

Experienced guest faculty members are usually drawn from the industry to providecritical insights on a particular topic/issue in a course or a programme. Many ofwhom have been associated with the institute for several years now. There is aregular flow of faculty members from leading foreign institutions. The institute aimsto have a faculty mix of 70% regular and 30% adjunct/visiting in variousprogrammes. The composition of faculty from foreign institutions may be up to10%, to bring global experience and perspective. LIBRARY & INFORMATION CENTER (LIC)The Library and Information Center (LIC) is IIM Kozhikode's knowledge hub, actingas a nerve center of scholarly and corporate information. It aims at providingstate-of-the-art information backup and support to its instructional processes andresearch, through excellent resources and value-added information services in allareas of management and related disciplines. Over the years, the LIC has registeredsignificant progress and brought worldwide recognition and laurels to IIMK. The E-Learning Platform developed by the Center for Development of Digital Libraries(CDDL) for the WHO India Office, the Information Portal for the Coir Board, andthe Greenstone Support Network for South Asia deserve a mention. IIMK's ambitiousDigital Library project, sponsored by the Ministry of Human Resource Development,received the status of an example collection from the renowned 'Greenstone' familyof the University of Waikato, New Zealand.

It houses over 31,300 books in print form, 265 print journals, 30,000 e-books,3,500 bound volumes of research journals, 15,000 corporate annual reports andmore than 15,500 e-journals from India and abroad, in addition to 2,555 CD-ROM publications on contemporary issues. The audiovisual unit in the LIC hostsover 254 educational videos covering a wide range of disciplines in management.IIMK is an active member in the IIMs' Library Consortium as well as the Ministry ofHRD's INDEST Consortium. The annual rupee equivalent of document resourcingin the LIC is around five crores. IIMK is also developing special documentationcenters in the European Union and in the ASEAN countries.

INDIAN BUSINESS MUSEUMIIM Kozhikode, during the end of 2010, embarked on an ambitiousprogramme to create a Museum of Indian Business History, which isnow first of its kind, unique, monumental, and significant inacknowledging the contribution of India's business leaders in themaking of India. The Museum spans over 23,000 sq. ft. area withtheme-based sections; such as the ancient, medieval, colonial, pre-independence, post-independence, business sector, public sector,banking sector, technology sector, individual contributors, makersof modern India etc.

Over half a dozen of the top level corporate in India has set up their own exclusivepavilions in the Museum. TATA, Godrej, Reliance, SBI, Infosys and FACT havealready made their presence. COMPUTING FACILITIESIn the last decade, the use of information technology in education and researchhas grown in importance across a wide spectrum of disciplines. We at IIMK, viewInformation technology not only as a critical infrastructure needed for supportingmodern academic needs but also as a central component of the academic processitself.

IIMK provides distributed and clustered computing across the campus through awired and wireless backbone running across the campus. Various buildings in thecampus are interconnected through a 6 core SMF Gigabit Fiber Optic backbone.The connectivity to Desktops is either using eCAT5 UTP cable or through Wi-Fi.The computer centre acts as the main hub of the network and hosts a layer 3backbone switch. All the hostel rooms are also connected to the campus LAN.Classrooms, Computer Centre, and Library buildings are enabled with indoor WI-FI facility. The academic hill is enabled with the outdoor WI-FI facility also.

Network printing facility is available on a variety of printers such as Laser, LineMatrix and Dot Matrix Printers. Other equipment available in the centre includeCD/DVD Writers, Scanners and Digital Video Camera etc.A wide range of latestsoftware tools and office automation packages such as MS Visual Studio, DB2,Oracle, Developer-2000, Macromedia, Flash, 3D Studio Max, STATA, SYSTAT,SPSS, SPSS Form Builder, LINDO, LINGO, MINITAB, LIMDEP, EVIEWS, MS-Office,MS-Project 2007, MS-FrontPage, Dragon Naturally Speaking, Scansoft Pro, etc.have been made available for users.

The computing facilities are available round the clock on 24 hours/day, 365days/year basis.

Backwaters – Management Festival

'Backwaters' is the annual B-school meet of IIMK which incorporates thezeal of participation in management events along with enlightenmentof buzzing minds through eminent personalities who come, discuss andenlighten all with their experience and views. Backwaters has widespreadparticipation of students from across numerous premier B-Schools ofIndia participating in events spanning all management verticals withstar attractions including White Knight (Business Plan), Avatar (Next BestCEO), Bizzathalon (Quiz) and Labyrinth (Online Treasure Hunt) amongother events.

Expressions

Expressions, with the theme of 'Yes, we care', not only acknowledges thehard work of the support staff but also gives them a platform to showcasetheir talent and realize the potential that they have within themselves.Apart from performances from the employees, PGP students of IIMKozhikode also showcase their talent in the form of variousperformances for the audience.

Aarogya – Health Camp

The objective of the program was to promote a healthy IIM-K community by providing the convenient option of taking medical tests within campus,given the hectic schedule and lifestyle of the fraternity. It also meant to provide free medical check-ups for support staff. A margin from tests taken by them was used to subsidize the check-ups done by the support staff.

ECHOES – Cultural Festival

The Cultural Committee of IIM Kozhikode is an integral part of everystudent's life at campus. The committee's premier event is the AnnualNational Cultural Festival, Echoes conducted in the month of January.Echoes include a wide variety of events from Music, Dance, Theatre toQuizzes and literary events spread over a period of three days. Echoesgarner participation from colleges across the country from differentdomains creating an atmosphere of healthy competition and borderlessinteraction.

International Day

International Day celebration at IIMK is observed in the last week ofOctober every year. On this day, the incoming international exchangestudents, studying with the second year students at IIMK, play host to thefaculty members and all students. They make presentations about theirinstitutions and countries they belong to. They also prepare dishes oftheir home countries, and personal a cultural extravaganza includingsinging and dancing performances to showcase their respective cultures.

Horizons

The Industry Interaction Cell (IIC) organizes the annual managementconclave of IIM Kozhikode, Horizons. It brings together industry leadersfrom diverse sectors and offers a unique opportunity to students to learnfrom some of the leading minds in the country.

GETTING TO KOZHIKODELocationKozhikode (also called Calicut) is the third-largest city in the state of Kerala. Thecapital of the erstwhile Malabar district, Kozhikode city is the headquarters of theKozhikode district. A melting pot of diverse cultures, Kozhikode is an importanttrade centre in south India, associated for long with trade in spices and silk. Today,Kozhikode is famous for its palm-fringed beaches, tropical forests, and Ayurvedictherapy.

TravelKozhikode is well connected by air, rail and road to major cities in India. IndianAirlines, Spice Jet and Jet Airways have frequent flights from Delhi, Bangalore andMumbai to Kozhikode International Airport. Cochin International Airport is a 4-hour drive from Kozhikode. Alternately, Cochin and Kozhikode are connected bydirect flights. Kozhikode International Airport is connected by daily direct flights tomajor cities in the Middle East. The city is also well connected with the rest of thestate through its rail and road systems.
