Dr. Ir. Hans van Doorne

Dr. Ir. Hans van Doorne, Dean Faculty of Pharmacy Ubaya and the committee

In recent years, the microbiological examination has become an important element to the quality control of pharmaceutical products both sterile and non-sterile products. The fact shows that the microbiological examination method has been utilised by three major Pharmacopoeias in the world, the European Pharmacopoeia, the Japanese Pharmacopoeia and the United States Pharmacopoeia. Indeed, the harmonisation method will be compulsory in Europe as per January 1st, 2009, while in Japan and the United States the method will be compulsory in the near future. Considering this, there are two challenging ques-tions for Indonesian pharmaceutical industry rise up, they are: “How the method will impact the microbiological examination method in Indonesia?” and “Is Indonesia ready to implement the harmonisation method?”

Being very eager to respond the above questions and to work hand in hand with the Indonesian pharmaceutical industry, last August 6th-7th, 2008, the Faculty of Pharmacy Ubaya in collabo-ration with the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy, University of Groningen, The Netherlands has organized the Pharmaceutical seminar “Current Pharmaceutical Microbiology: Methods, Harmonization, and Technology”. The keynote speaker of the seminar was Dr. Ir. Hans van Doorne, the senior lecturer at the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy, University of Groningen. As an expert in the pharmaceutical microbiology, Dr. Van Doorne has been appointed to join a number of Dutch committees, including the committee that has written the GMP guidelines for Dutch hospi-tal pharmacists. Since 1993, he is indeed the Dutch delegate of Group 1 (Microbiological contamination) of the European Pharmacopoeia, and has actively participated in discussions on the international harmonisation of sterility testing and microbio-logical examination.

In front of more than 100 participants whom mostly come from pharmaceutical industry, traditional medicine industry, cosmetic industry, lecturers, microbiolo-gists, and government representatives nationwide, Dr. Van Doorne delivered some solutions related to pharmaceuti-cal microbiology aspects, and shared the latest information in regards of harmoni-zation method of microbiological exami-nation. There were 6 main topics delivered on the seminar, they are (1) Biology of micro organisms related to implications for pharmaceutical produc-tion and quality control; (2) Validation on heat sterilization and sterility testing; (3) Microbiology examination of non sterile products comprise: total viable count and specified micro organisms with the explanation of new harmonized meth-ods; (4) Validation of cleans rooms; (5) Membrane filtration; and (6) Modern microbiology methods.

At the first session, Dr. Van Doorne explored an introduction in pharmaceutical microbiology including the basic characteris-tics of the various types of micro organisms, with special emphasis on the bacterial cell. The event was concluded with the discussion and workshop on Modern microbiology meth-ods & applications of CO2-detection, ATP measurement, impedance & solid phase laser scanning and their implications on pharmaceutical products.

Australian Scholarship Session Delivered by David Spiller fromUniversity of Adelaide, Australia

For years, it is undeniable that between the Australian Government and the Indonesian Government, there is a strong relationship in many areas. Education including scholarship is one area that has been well maintained and developed. Considering Australian scholarship as an outstanding programme that can constantly develop the competency of its lecturers on July 15th, 2008 Ubaya invited Mr. David Spiller, a Scholarship Linkages person from International Office, University of Adelaide, Australia, who is also a former Project Leader of Australian Development Scholarship (ADS Indonesia).

In Ubaya, Mr. Spiller delivered a special session about Australian scholarship. To the participants consisted of Ubaya academic members, Mr. Spiller informed several forms of Australian Scholarship, such as Australian Leadership Award, Endeavour Award, U of Adelaide Scholarship, and ADS. He gave important advices and guidelines upon the scholarship and encouraged the participants to apply for Australian scholarship as most of the scholarships are addressed to public sector employees, lecturers, or researchers. During the Question and Answer session, Mr. Budi Hartanto, one of the participants asked “What do you consider as an important thing when applying the scholarship?” Mr. Spiller responded “Do not miss even a single point when you are filling the application form, once you missed, even a single point, your application will be eliminated”.

The quotation can be reflected in a positive attitude to accept cultural differ-ences. Cultural differences should be considered as a positive thing to the development of a community because it will stimulate people’s maturity emotion-ally and intellectually as someone can easily accept differences in his/her surrounding. This thing has been done eagerly by Surabaya City Government lately when they held “Cross Culture Fest 2008”. It is an annual cultural festival

which shows not only East Java traditional performing arts but also traditional performing arts from some other provinces in Indonesia, moreover it shows performances from abroad;

“A mind is like a parachute, it only works if it is open”

to study at Ubaya in fall semester 2008-2009. Angelo Vodegel, Fatih Kördemirci, Jacobus van den Nieuwendijk, Joëlle Brouwer, Mario Lauw, and Selina Orban have decided to join study abroad programme in Ubaya before they gradu-ate. Those RBS students major in Asian Trade Management, therefore they find it essential to get deeper understanding by learning the knowledge with real environ-ment and culture related to their major. Their decision to study at Ubaya is strengthened by the fact that Ubaya is able to offer courses taught in English for Indonesian and foreign students. It shows that Ubaya, supported by its human resources, has been ready to be interna-tionally recognised.

such as Japan, China, Korea, USA and Thailand.

One of Ubaya international students was honourably invited by Surabaya City Government to perform her traditional performance in front of public at the closing of the event. The international student was Wei Hou from Guangxi University China. She played traditional musical instrument named GuZheng, a well-known string musical instrument from China. The song she played was Yu Zhou Chang Wan which describes about the journey of a fisherman to the sea and to go back to his homeland. This event certainly can positively become the way of exchanging cultural knowledge towards different ethnics and also nationality in Surabaya.

While waiting to start their courses on August 19th, those students have already experienced to watch the traditional culture of East Java. The Office of Surabaya City Government invited them to come at Reog Festival on August 18th. This annual event is held to keep the existence of the traditional art performance and celebrate Indonesia’s 63rd Independence Day. Bambang D. Hartono – Surabaya City Mayor – in his opening speech said that Surabaya Reog Festival is a good way to show and promote local culture for tourism commodity; and Ubaya international students can be indirect agents for East Java tourism. It proves that the existence of Ubaya international students does not only benefit Ubaya internally in an academic way but also the city of Surabaya culturally and economically.

Joint Research on the Implications of Sidoarjo Mudflow between Ubaya and Yale University, USA

There are 600 multinational companies in Sidoarjo and it might be possible they will leave because of the mudflow. Sidoarjo will not only lose businesses already in Sidoarjo, but also prospective businesses as well. Although only eight percent of Sidoarjo is under mud, international businessmen no longer consider Sidoarjo a viable place for investment. The environmental impact is reflected in the fishing industry losses; Sidoarjo was once the second largest shrimp producer in Indonesia, and since the mud eruption, shrimp production has plummeted.

As time goes by the acknowledgement towards Ubaya’s teaching quality has come from countries around the world. After Australia, several countries in Europe and Asia, this time the acknowledgement comes from United States of America. This is considered as an outstanding acknowl-edgement because it comes from Yale University USA, a well-known world class university.

Yale University is a distinguished world class university in USA and the 2nd best university in the world from The Top World Universities 2007 published by The Times Higher Education Supplement (THES). Having a high standard teaching quality, there are several Nobel Prize winners and USA presidents who graduated from Yale University. The 3 latest USA Presidents; George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush are the alumni of this university.

The acknowledgement is proven by having the trust to send its 3 students to Ubaya for doing a research project. June 20th, 2008, Ubaya welcomed Phoebe Clarke, Edwina Clarke, and Sharon Madanes, 3 students of Yale University. Those 3 students worked together for 6 weeks with the researchers from Centre for Environmental Studies and Centre for Human Rights Studies Ubaya concerning the social, economic, and political implications of Sidoarjo mudflow.
