DR GERHARD PETERSAcademic Head of International Business Programmes
EKTA BHOJWANIBACHELOR OF INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS
Not only did Ekta complete her BIB, but she did it with straight A grades and several scholarships which came as a pleasant surprise, she says. “They were completely unexpected and a good bit of extra money to receive as a student. I was surprised because I didn’t think universities gave scholarships to international students.”
Ekta now works as a management consultant for KPMG with their IT advisory team. Her ability to bring financial knowledge to the IT team is what sets her apart, she says. Her studies at AIS allowed her to develop her skills not just in finance, but in overall business capabilities like accounting, marketing and intercultural communication. “I rounded up my qualifications and made myself more sellable.”
In addition, the international aspects of the BIB program made her more attractive to a multi-national firm. “At the time, you don’t really know how you’re going to use what you’re studying. But now I can see that it opens your mind to working with people from different cultures, especially in
A move overseas from Oman and starting again with her studies was just what Ekta needed after finding herself at a crossroads in life. Originally from India, she recently completed her chartered accountancy qualification which began with Bachelor of International Business (BIB) studies at AIS.

DIPLOMA IN IB
A two-year qualification which gives students the opportunity to progress into specialised courses at Stage 2. Compulsory course Strategic Management looks at business planning from a medium- to long-term perspective and teaches the importance of establishing high-level enterprise goals to guide detailed operational implementation. The programme includes six elective courses which may include subjects in the accounting area (Managerial Accounting, Financial Accounting, Financial Management), the management area (Organisational Behaviour, Operations Management, Human Resource Management), or the marketing area (Marketing Management, Retail Management, Consumer Behaviour).
The programme comprises a total of 14 courses: • 2.101 Accounting Principles• 2.102 Management Principles• 2.103 Marketing Principles• 2.112 Information Technology Concepts• 2.113 Business Economics• 2.120 English: Study Writing• 2.222 Strategic Management• 2.231 Introduction to International Business• and six elective courses, of which four must
be at Stage 2 or higher. Up to four elective courses may be selected from Tourism Management or Hospitality Management.
A three-year qualification that incorporates the courses available in the Level 5 and 6 diplomas, and builds upon this foundation with specialised and elective courses at Stage 3 to cater to the interests of the student.
The BIB can be awarded without a specialisation, or with one of the following specialisations:
Accounting Management Marketing
Students may change their nominated specialisation after completing their Stage 1 courses. A double specialisation can sometimes be achieved by satisfying the requirements of each of two specialisations.
In some cases the specialisation will satisfy the requirements for professional memberships, e.g. 2.114 Business Law and 2.235 New Zealand Taxation must be chosen as two of the four elective courses by BIB (Accounting) students who wish to apply for credit towards membership with relevant accounting bodies such as the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants upon completion of their degree.
The programme comprises all compulsory courses from DIB (L6) plus:• 2.111 Business Communication• 2.331 International Business• One of

Students aiming to have the BIB awarded with a specialisation must complete the courses as specified in the specialisation table (right). The four elective courses may include no more than two courses at Stage I, and may be selected from International Business, Tourism Management or Hospitality Management.
The Graduate Diploma in International Business (GDIB) is designed for graduates of a bachelor’s degree or similar qualification in a discipline other than international business who wish to achieve a level of competency and a qualification in international business. It also caters for those with a bachelor’s degree in one area of business who wish to broaden their knowledge in another. Some students may wish to use this qualification as a pathway to postgraduate study in international business or related disciplines. Others may wish to use it to enhance an existing qualification for a management career in international business.
The programme consists of seven courses:• 2.113 Business Economics• 2.231 Introduction to International Business• 2.331 International Business• One International Business elective course
at Stage 2• and three International Business elective
courses at Stage 3
Note: Cross-credits are not available in the GDIB. Students with prior studies in a subject will be given the opportunity to broaden their knowledge base by taking other courses at the appropriate level.

today’s global market. So that’s fun – you don’t get set in your way of thinking and you constantly get to work with people from different countries and cultures.”
Asked about why she decided on New Zealand as her destination, Ekta is honest in her response. “I just wanted to get away from it all, and my life back in Oman and India. New Zealand is the last bus stop on the planet.” However, in hindsight, it is this distance, she realises that makes the international business studies so relevant and valuable.
Would she recommend AIS to others? “Absolutely. It’s given me the best start I could imagine. I came here with pretty much nothing really that I could sell to New Zealand, and it gave me a great place to start – friendly people, a warm friendly place when you’re a stranger to New Zealand. I would whole-heartedly recommend it. And all I would say is, give it your best shot and anything is possible. AIS will definitely help you go the distance if you’re just willing to put in the work.”
