Ladies and Gentlemen, dear IACL members,

You are all warmly welcome to come to

UW-Madison for the forthcoming IACL-26 in early May.

It is quite unprecedented that after a lapse of twenty some

years the same conference is to be held at the same venue

the second time. It is really amazing and encouraging that

the response to the call for papers has been exceedingly

enthusiastic. On the behalf of the association I would like

to express my heart-felt gratitude to every IACL member

and every participant for joining the upcoming happy

event. Your continued and ungrudging engagement plays

a pivotal role in making the association a perennial

success. I am immensely proud of the vitality and strength

of our association which benefits from the firm support of

every member and the input of young budding scholars. It

has been a truly pleasant and rewarding experience to

work with our executive committee in particular our

secretary, Professor Jianhua Hu and our treasurer,

Professor Chenqing Song, as well as Professor Danqing Liu, our next president. I

really appreciate their ungrudging devotion and enterprising spirit. We owe a deep

debt of gratitude to Professor Hongming Zhang for taking the initiative to organize

this conference. He must have had spent countless hours of putting together a team of

colleagues doing peer-group reviews, and dealing with a host of demanding matters

catering to the need of every member. It is with a deep sense of high expectation that

special sessions will be devoted to presentations by short-listed candidates for young

scholar awards. No less important is the presentation by each and every participant. I

am looking forward to seeing you all in IACL-26, UW-Madison, soon.

摘 要 官话和晋语古咸山摄一等韵的今读，根据并入二等韵的不同情况，可分

为八型、十一类。排比五种主要类型，不难发现咸山摄一等韵的演变具有明显的

阶段性——这是由其内部的端见、阳入和开合的差别造成的，背后俱有语音学上

的道理可说。文章最后结合历史文献考察了部分音变大致发生的时间，并指出：

就咸山摄一等韵的演变而言，晋语虽有保守之处，但并无超出官话的表现，二者

实际同出一源且共同发展。

How to define linguistic units from a psycholinguistic approach: A

case study of morpheme

There remains great ambiguity in psycholinguistic research as to exactly how the

written code is processed in the Chinese writing system. Some areas of confusion

include 1) the lack of consistent application of linguistic terminology in research on

Chinese, where terms such as “morphemes” and “words” have been used to refer to a

variety of distinctive units, 2) a mismatch on the levels of analyses and the stimuli

employed in studies, such that it is not uncommon for a study set up to investigate word

processing to be using complex stimuli that better resemble phrases, and 3) several gaps

in research regarding the role of sub-lexical and character level information in lexical

access.

The present study addresses the first and second issues by summarizing the

inconsistencies and mismatches in psycholinguistic research of Chinese reading. Then

using a lexical decision task, an experiment demonstrates the role of sub-lexical

semantic activation. The fact that semantic meaning is not only present at the character

level, but also embedded in and activated at the sub-character level begs a

reconsideration of the definition of “morpheme” from a psycholinguistic perspective.

The present research offers a more complex view regarding exactly what constitutes

the smallest unit of meaning in online character processing, and provides a nuanced

direction for future psycholinguistic research on reading in Chinese.

上古汉语“主之谓”及“主而谓”结构的句法

摘 要 本文考察上古汉语“主之谓”结构的句法，并以之为参照，分析上古汉语的

“主而谓”结构。这两种结构既有共性又有差异。其共性在于，它们的句法结构都

实现为“NP F VP”形式，陈述对象 NP 与述谓语 VP 之间都有一个显性的功能语类

F；其差异恰恰在于 F，不同结构中的 F 具有不同的特征，句法属性、句法层次

各不相同，正是功能语类的差异导致了不同结构句法本质的差异（Chomsky 1995）。

本文细致梳理并刻画“主之谓”和“主而谓”的语言事实，从事实和理论出发指出前

人观点的问题，在此基础上对两种结构做出全新的句法表征与分析：“主之谓”是

非定式 IP，“之”是非定式 INFL 中心语；“主而谓”是体现说话人主观评价的 MoodP，

“而”是选择定式句为补足语的评价语势中心语 Moodevaluative。“主而谓”与“主之

谓”的不同句法表现正是定式性 MoodP 与非定式 IP 的本质差异所致。基于“主之

谓”、“主而谓”同为“NP F VP”结构的共性，本文引入 den Dikken（2006）的关联

范畴理论，进一步分析功能语类“之”和“而”的异同，发现“之”既能做 RELATOR

又能做 LINKER，“而”只能做 RELATOR。

第 17 屆中國當代語言學國際研討會暨中國社會科學院社會科學論壇定於 2018

年 10 月 26 日（週五）至 28 日（週日）在北京理工大學召開。本屆研討會由中

國社會科學院語言研究所《當代語言學》主辦、北京理工大學外國語學院承辦、

香港中文大學語言學及現代語言系協辦。

兩年一次的“中國當代語言學國際研討會”是國內唯一由期刊編輯部主辦、以期

刊命名的一線綜合性國際語言學學術會議。歷屆大會都有許多世界知名的學者參

加。當代大會的議題涵蓋語言學多個分支領域的研究，包括句法學、音系學、語

音學、語義學、語用學、語體學、話語分析、認知語言學、歷史語言學、功能語

言學、人類語言學、社會語言學、語言獲得、外語教學理論研究等，研究的語言

不僅包括各個歷史時期的漢語以及各地方言，還包括各民族語言、外國語以及手

語。

當代語言學研討會最早可追溯到 1987 年。當時經中國社會科學院語言研究所和

院科研局批准，國外語言學研究室開始每兩年舉辦一次全國範圍的“國外語言學

編輯工作研討會”。第 1 屆、第 2 屆獨立召開；自第 3 屆開始，研討會更名為

“國外語言學研討會”，與高校聯合召開並邀請海內外同行參加，至 1997 年，

累計召開 7 屆。自 1998 年更名為“中國當代語言學國際研討會”，擴大到中型

國際會議規模，截至 2016 年累計召開 16 屆。第 17 屆“中國當代語言學國際研

討會”將於 2018 年 10 月 26-28 日在北京理工大學外國語學院召開。

本屆會議期間，同時舉辦“論元結構和事件結構工作坊”（Workshop on Argument

Structure and Event Structure）和 “手語語言學工作坊”（Workshop on Sign

Linguistics）。本屆研討會將評選第二屆《當代語言學》“青年語言學家獎”。

促進洋為中用、引進創新是歷屆會議的宗旨。本屆會議歡迎當代語言學各個分支

領域的研究成果，包括句法學、音系學、語音學、語義學、語用學、認知語言學、

POLA 是 Project of Linguistic Analysis 的縮寫，是王士元先生在美國加州大學伯

克利分校建立的語言所。《中國語言學報》就誕生於此，海內外很多著名的語言

學學者曾相聚 POLA，在那裡定期討論，交流合作。迄今為止 POLA 論壇已成功

舉辦過兩期，並得到廣大青年學者及在讀博士生的好評。為促進中國語言學的科

Lexicalisation Typology of Motion Events (Talmy 1985, Berman & Slobin 1994; inter

alias) has drawn much attention since the late 90’s and pops up under the spotlight in

various arenas, such as linguistic typology, cognitive linguistics, psycho-linguistics,

language acquisition and even historical linguistics, involving hundred-ish languages

of over ten families.

To further the typological studies on the Expressions of Motion Events in languages

and dialects in China, the Department of Chinese Language and Literature (Key

Disciplines at the Provincial Level), College of Humanities, Changshu Institute of

Technology (CIoT) will host the 2018 Seminar on Linguistic Typology and the

Expressions of Motion Events in languages in China on Donghu Campus, CIoT,

2018.12.21-23.

Description of the School

The School of Linguistic Sciences and arts at Jiangsu Normal University is the first and

only school in China specializing in linguistic research. It is a pioneer of

The school provides and open, dynamic research atmosphere operating an ERP

(Neuroscan 256) lab and an fMRI (GE 3.0T) lab, which provide the necessary facilities

for experimentations in neurolinguistics, psychology and cognitive science.

We are seeking a Linguist to join our data team. This role focuses on speech and

language data, primarily in the areas of transcription, text annotation, and general data

analysis deliverables. The Linguist must be capable of:

- Transcribing and annotating high priority deliverables

- Contributing toward device interaction deliverables

- Translating established guidelines into daily work practices

- Working autonomously with minimum direction

Description

The HERE Chinese Annotator position performs detailed web research for geographical

points-of-interest (POI), using resources like official websites, review sites, online

search, etc for HERE Corporation. Annotation is a measure for how well our HERE

mapping software is performing. When HERE map changes are implemented,

Annotation informs us if those changes are better or worse for the User. As an annotator,

you will help to: 1) determine the possible intent of user-entered map searches, 2)

determine the value of the POI being returned as a map listing, and (3) confirm

information about POIs using web-based research.

Main Responsibilities:

- Rate the quality of HERE maps generated POIs from user-entered map searches. The

Annotator must be able to clearly discuss their thought process leading to each rating.

- Perform online research to determine and list the most likely intent of the user-entered

map searches.

- Perform data quality checks on the various POI attributes in our mapping database.

- Be able to evaluate two different lists of software-generated maps search results.

Work Environment:

All work is done remotely through an online portal website. Annotator work is then

reviewed by Annotation mergers. All Annotators follow task-specific annotation

guidelines. Within that structure, workers must be creative and open-thinkers in terms

of web-based resources needed to perform their work. All data is displayed through

specific task templates through the online portal website.

Scope:

An Annotator is an Individual contributor. Annotators work independently and remotely.

Some workers, after high-performance assessments, are trained as “mergers”, doing

higher level work than normal Annotators wherein they review previous Annotator

work, provide final ratings, and provide feedback to Annotator as necessary. All

Annotation work is done anonymously through username on the online portal website–

no Annotator knows the personal information of other Annotators.

Impact Decision making:

Workers make decisions based on the utility provided by the search responses, or the

correctness of the attributes associated with a POI. Collectively, this data allows the

HERE Team to make informed changes to the HERE map software and for database

quality.

In Grounding in Chinese Written Narrative Discourse Wendan Li

offers a comprehensive and innovative account of how Mandarin

Chinese, as a language without extensive morphological marking,

highlights (or foregrounds) major events of a narrative and demotes

(or backgrounds) other supporting descriptions. Qualitative and

quantitative methods in the analysis and examinations of authentic

written text provide extensive evidence to demonstrate that various

types of morpho-syntactic devices are used in a wide range of

structural units in Chinese to mark the distinction between

foregrounding and backgrounding. The analysis paves the way for

future studies to systematically approach grounding-related issues.

The typological viewpoint adopted in the chapters serves well

readers from both the Chinese tradition and other languages in

discourse analysis.

Southern Min: Comparative Phonology

and Subgrouping

Southern Mǐn refers to a group of Chinese dialects spoken mainly in

Southeast China and Taiwan. This group occupies a special position

in the study of Chinese dialects, not only because of its large

population of speakers (around 48 million) but also because of its

preservation of various archaic linguistic features long lost in other

dialects. In this book, B.C. Kwok applies the comparative method on

new fieldwork data to reconstruct the common sound system of

‘Proto-Southern Mǐn’, from which all modern Southern Mǐn

varieties emerged. The syllable initials, finals and tonal categories of

Proto-Southern Mǐn are illustrated by more than 500 examples. In

addition, this book offers an alternative view on the subgrouping of

12 Southern Mǐn varieties. It proposes that the Quánzhōu dialect and

the Zhāngzhōu dialect form the two main branches of the dialect

group. This book should be of great interest to advanced students and

scholars in the fields of historical linguistics and Chinese

dialectology.
