Types of interaction
Whole class work
• Drilling to fix and memorise a correct model
• Drilling as a classroom routine
• Drilling as a practice activity (e.g. substitution drills)
• Checking homework
• Taking the attendance
• Getting the children’s attention
• Starting and stopping activities
• Tidying up
• Revising classroom rules

Advantages
•Everyone participates
•Easy for teacher to control
•Gives students a sense of security
•Fun
Disadvantages
•Possible for practising only short chunks
•Very controlled language production
Pair work
Advantages
•Everybody participates
•Student talking time is maximised
•Less stressful for students
•Long chunks of language can be practised
•Can be personalised
•Chances to experiment with language
Disadvantages
•Difficult to control
•Noisy
Conditions for successful pair work
• SS need a reason for doing it
• Gradual introduction of pair work
• Careful structure with clear repeated procedure
• Show how to do it, involve SS in demonstration
