What is an Interactive Whiteboard?

An interactive whiteboard or IWB, is a piece of hardware thatlooks much like a standard whiteboard but it connects to acomputer and a projector to make a very powerful tool. Theprojector projects the computer's desktop onto the board's surfacewhere users control the computer using a pen, finger or otherdevice. (SMART Boards respond to Koosh Balls) Whenconnected, the interactive whiteboard becomes a giant, touch-sensitive version of the computer screen.

Anything that can be accessed from your computer can beaccessed and displayed or annotated on the interactive board, forexample Word documents, PowerPoint presentations, photos,websites or online materials.

What can I do with an Interactive Whiteboard?

•Write over the top of programs to highlight and annotate points.

•View & navigate websites that the entire room will be able to see in a teacher-directed manner.

•Promote group work. Students can add their contributions to discussions by writing directly on the

whiteboard.

•Work collaboratively on word processing documents , spreadsheets & other projects.

•Skype

•Use it as you would a normal whiteboard to mark objects, highlight or label elements but with the

ability to save or print out the results easily.

•Show video clips that explain difficult concepts in any curricular area.

•Demonstrate how an educational software program works or how you would like it utilized.

•Create drawings, notes & concept maps in class time which can be saved for future reference or

issued as instant handouts for the lesson you have just given.

•Run on-line tests & opinion polls & display instant feedback to the group.

Log-in to the machine connected to the Board:

• Point Promethean remote at board & press once (red button)•To shut down board point remote at board & press red buttontwice.

• Adjust the height of the Promethean if needed with the remote on the left side of the board

Getting Started…

HOW DO I GET ACTIVITIES ON MY BOARD?

•Use the computer connected to the Board to download/createactivities & then store them in your own folder.

•Download/Create activities on any computer & bring them to themachine connected to the board with a USB key.

•A USB key is a small, portable flash memory card that plugs into a computer s USB port andfunctions as a portable hard drive.

•Download/Create activities on any computer & then store them toyour own website (Website creation is made easy with Weebly!).This will give you access to your activities on any board.

How do I Open an Activity•Locate the icon for the activity.•Double click•Activity will open in the appropriate software.

What Will the Activities Look Like?Basically Interactive Activities resemble the look of a PowerPoint. Typically an activity is composed of individual slides.

Each slide is designed in the same manner as a Power Point,but then it allows you to make certain elements on the slide

function via touch.

What Are My Options for Editing & Creating?

•Utilize SMART Notebook (free license for all buildings with SMART products) &ActivInspire both located on the computer connected to the board.

•Numerous online tutorials/videos.•Attend SMART Notebook PD for pay or hours.•Schedule one on one time for assistance in creating.

•Currently the machines connected to the Prometheans are theonly ones in the schools that have the ActivInspire software tomodify & create Flip Charts. Promethean planet has a FreePersonal Version.•Once I start exploring the ActivVotes clickers we may offerActivInspire PD’s as well.

• Turn off the projector by pressing the red button on theremote twice.• In apple menu bar: Select Software & Quit Software• Close all windows• Logout• Make sure the remote and pens are returned.
