Cultus opens up new possibilities. With Cultus on the farm, soil cultivation is morepowerful and work is a sheer pleasure.

Cultus has quickly established itself as a spear-head in soil cultivation – powerful, durable andefficient at one and the same time. It is suitablefor all soil types through the options available toflexibly equip and use the cultivator at differentdepths and working widths, making Cultus asure-fire winner.

Impressive workSimplicity and performance were the keywordsduring the research and development phase. Cul-tus is easy to adjust and the final results in the

field are extremely convincing. It does magnifi-cent work in stubble tillage and incorporation ofharvest trash throughout the entire soil after har-vesting. It is equally good for a second cultiva-tion some time after a quick Carrier pass or forseedbed preparation in spring on autumn-ploug-hed soil.

Always reliableThe future will bring changes in crop production. The economy will continue to rise and fall and itsfluctuations will probably be more extreme andmore frequent than before. In such circumstan-ces, Cultus is a safe and trustworthy businesspartner – a machine to rely on.

Flexible and adaptableFlexibility is a must in soil cultivation. Almost no other activity requires such a feeling for weather, moisture, soiltype and harvest trash. Cultus shows its strength here, witha range of options and equipment for all soil types.

A width for every farmCultus is available in working widths from 3 to 6.2 metres, so there is a Cultusfor small, medium and large farms. The horsepower available determines thechoice of working width. The smallest model has a draught requirement from 90and the medium 200 - 350 hp, while the largest requires at least 310 hp.

Ploughed or ploughlessStubble cultivation is a primary area of work for Cultus, as is deep cultivationand mechanical weed control. For example after sugarbeet harvest, when thesoil is compacted, Cultus does a fantastic job of loosening before wheat drilling.A shallow Cultus pass directly after the combine harvester mixes harvest trashefficiently into the soil for rapid decomposition and to rapidly make weeds andvolunteers to germinate. Cultus also does an excellent job of seedbed prepara-tion in spring. Driving diagonally across the previous cultivation pass maximi-ses the levelling effect.

Working depth can be variedWorking depth can easily be varied according to requirements. It is set hydrauli-cally from the cab on the trailed Cultus 420 - 620 models and can be changed onthe go. The working depth chosen is clearly displayed on a scale. On Cultus300 - 400, the working depth is set with clips.

Time is a narrow window incrop production. For best re-sults, everything must be doneon exactly the right day – timing is everything.

If everything goes smoothly, timeis not a problem. However, mo-dern cropping is often carried outwithin very narrow time margins. There is almost always a lack oftime and there is little leeway. Halfthe days available in the calendarfor field work can suddenly disap-pear due to unfavourable weather. In such circumstances, it is essen-tial to have the capacity availablewhen the right time comes. Cultushas that capacity.

An entire working weekThe diagram above clearly showswhat speed and width can do toincrease the performance of Cul-tus. A Cultus 300 driven at 6km/hour covers around 1.3 - 1.4

ha/hour. However, if the same Cul-tus can be driven at 12 km/hour,the work rate doubles to 2.7ha/hour. On an area of 100 hecta-res, the difference is almost 40hours, or an entire working weekin the tractor cab. Going up in sizeto a Cultus 620 gives a correspon-ding increase but at a higher level. For example, at 6 km/hour a Cul-tus 620 covers around 2.8 ha/hourwhile at 12 km/hour it achieves asmuch as 5.6 ha/hour. This is an im-portant difference when there israin in the air.

Simple equationThe equation is simple. The capa-city is decided by the speed andworking width of the machine. There must be sufficient horsepo-wer available for draught and suf-ficient working width for scope. The faster and wider the machine, the more hectares it can completewithin a certain time. The farmerhimself decides how much the ca-

pacity should cost. A larger trac-tor or a wider machine adds cost, but this must be weighed againstgetting the right things done atthe right time, e.g. drilling on theright day and thus laying the foun-dations for a high yield. Anotherimportant aspect in choice of Cul-tus working width for the tractoravailable is that the work resultsimprove with increased workingspeed – our recommendation is atleast 10 km/hour.

Important in the long termThe aim of cutting minutes in thefield can appear unimportant inan individual year. However, in thelong term all the evidence indica-tes that decreasing productioncosts is the foundation for a suc-cessful business. High producti-vity makes the difference betweenincome and costs a positive value, and this is an area where Cultuscan make a great difference.

Quality is the hallmark of all Väderstadmachines. The most important feature ofCultus is naturally quality of soil cultiva-tion, but other important aspects includequality of material, features, constructionand long life.

Cultus is widely acknowledged for its efficiencyin soil cultivation and incorporation of harvesttrash at both low and high speeds. Cultus leavesbehind a well-levelled surface ready for the seeddrill. The work results, the robust design and thesimple handling are impressive. Equally impres-sive is the quality of individual features on Cul-

tus, which gives long life and keeps the mainte-nance costs low.

Durable frame The main frame of Cultus 300 - 400 is manufactu-red from square profile steel with dimensions of100 x 100 x 10 mm. On the larger Cultus 420 - 620models, 200 x 100 x 10 mm steel profile is alsoincluded to provide a durability that can with-stand stresses and many hectares of tough dri-ving. The frame is made from high quality steeland the fully welded frame construction is desig-ned for maximum resistance to torsion. Compu-ter simulations were used to show how the forcepattern is distributed through the frame and theframe structure was then designed for maximumdurability.

Extensive testingOur R&D department carried out extensive tes-ting of many versions of tine and spring beforethey found the optimum solution. The lifetime ofthe springs was tested through tens of thou-sands of impacts in a fatigue test rig and thesprings themselves were put through their paceson countless hectares in the field before being re-leased onto the market.

Stone releaseThe tine has a release pressure of 450 kP. On im-pact with a stone, the tine exerts the same forcein the soil until it eventually trips up, to a max-imum of 30 cm. It then springs back instantly

once the obstacle has been pas-sed, and proceeds working.

Double springThere is a double spring systemon Cultus tines, with an extrainner spring for a more compactand secure construction. Thisdouble spring is stronger and hasa higher release force and longerlifetime than a single spring.

Stable mountingThe tine mounting is firmly wel-ded to the frame for stability anddurability. For stable and securemounting, the tine leg is attachedwith an ingenious constructionbased on a sleeve with conicalends, against which two concavecartridges are tightened by a bolt.Regardless of wear, this connec-tion never loosens, wear can bemonitored and the sleeve can ea-sily be replaced.

Marathon lasts longerCultus can be equipped with fourdifferent points, with 80 mm beingthe most common option. Boththis point and the wing blade arenow also available in optional Ma-rathon form, where they are rein-forced with a wearing surface ofhard metal (wolfram carbide) forsubstantially longer life.

A unique design of tine and shin, strongframe construction and powerful roller pro-vide Cultus with its enormous soil cultiva-ting ability.

On large models, Cultus 420 - 620, the large sup-port wheels (400/60x15.5) produce a stable rideat high driving speeds.

Exact working depthThe cultivation depth can be set hydraulicallyfrom the driving seat and can also be adjusted onthe go. Thanks to a master-and-slave system, theworking depth is regulated simultaneously onboth support wheels and packer roller, and there-fore always occurs parallel to the soil. Thismeans that Cultus maintains an exact workingdepth even on undulating land. On the smallermodels the working depth is set with clips.

Tight turning circle Cultus is available as mounted, or with either lin-kage drawbar or trailer drawbar. When the draw-bar is attached to the lifting arms the turningcircle is small, which gives good manoeuvrabilityon headlands.

Spacious frame construction The three or four axles are each 80 cm apart andhave a tine distribution of 20 - 30 cm dependingon Cultus model. The machine is spacious andhas a frame height of 85 cm, which means that itallows large amounts of soil and plant residues toflow through.

A 5th bonus axleCultus 420 – 620 has a unique solution wherebytwo tines are moved forward onto a fifth bonusaxle. The machine thereby allows very goodthroughflow of plant residues and has a minimalrisk of stoppages, even in wet conditions.

Effective levelling The large levelling discs leave a smooth workingsurface. These levelling discs have greaselessbearings so as to minimise maintenance. Tine le-vellers are available as alternative on Cultus 300– 420.

Optimal soil reconsolida-tionThe packer roller of steel or rub-ber ensures that the soil is resto-red to a degree of consolidationthat is optimal for germinatingseeds. After harvesting in the au-tumn, when Cultus is most oftenused, good reconsolidation is thekey to encouraging volunteerseeds to germinate, since it savessoil moisture. When volunteerplants have germinated, they can

easily be controlled mechanicallyor chemically later in the autumn.

Cultus Cobra tineThe Cultus Cobra tine is the re-sult of intensive developmentwork. Through the shape andcurvature of the tine, the soilflow is directed upwards alongthe tine face. The point breaksup the soil, which is transpor-ted freely upwards until theflow of soil is broken up into acascade of finely mixed soiland plant residues.

MixIn shin increases thedegree of actionThe MixIn shin is standard onCultus. Its curved shape makesit a phenomenal soil cultivator. The soil is thrown forwards in acircular motion and furthermixed once more when it landsas the tine reaches it andthrows it up again. This meansthat a single pass with Cultusactually gives a double cultiva-tion effect. This is also the rea-son why Cultus is so good atdrawing out rows of straw du-ring stubble cultivation afterthe combine harvester and soeffective at transporting plantmaterial forwards. Point

Folding tine Cultus can be equipped with fol-ding tines that allow the machineto cultivate the soil deeper withthe same tractor, e.g. through fol-

ding up the two outer tines oneach side (A). Cultus can also beused to cultivate with a wider tinedistribution by folding up alter-nate tines (B).

Narrow or wide pointCultus can be equipped withfour different points from 50 to210 mm width. The narrowest issuitable for breaking up hardlayers at depth, while the 210mm arrowhead point is intendedfor shallower work. The interme-diate point sizes are 80 and 120mm, with the 80 mm point asstandard. With the 80 mm tipthe soil profile is completely til-led when cultivating shallow.

Broad wing blades With 129 mm wing blades moun-ted on each side of the point, the cultivated area is extendedto full width. The wing bladesraise the soil and slice offweeds. They can be mounted on80 and 120 mm points.

Two-piece point decreasespart replacement costs The point section of each Cultustine is divided into a point and ashin. When the point is worn outit is easy to replace, whereas theshin has more to give and can beleft in place for longer. This dec-reases the part replacementcosts.

Cultus mixes plant residues effectively intothe entire topsoil. The packer roller recon-solidates the soil and leaves a level andfine-textured surface.

Reconsolidation is important in getting weedsand volunteer seeds to germinate, and in crea-ting good contact between straw and soil for fas-ter decomposition.

Rubber rollerThe 800 mm diameter rubber roller (600 mm forCultus 300 - 400) gives good reconsolidation andis suitable for most conditions. On light soils therubber roller is completely superior thanks to itslarge diameter. The rubber roller has very lowinertia and any risk of soil drag is practically eli-minated. It has a high resistance to wear and hasbeen tested during 6000 km of road transport.

Steel rollerThe steel roller (600 mm diameter on Cultus 420 -620) is the alternative when more aggressive re-consolidation is required, for example on heaviersoils. The steel roller can work in wet conditionsand has a good ability to run cleanly. The steelroller rings are manufactured from hardened spe-cial steel for long life. The profile of the steel rol-lers exerts a slicing and tilling action on plantresidues and soil clods.

Cage rollerThe caged roller provides good consolidation incombination with good carrying capacity. Theroller is recommended for relatively stone-freesoils. The large 550 mm diameter of the cagedroller gives it good performance on light soils.

Thorough soil reconsolidation

13

Effective levellingCultus is equipped with rotatinglevelling discs in hard-wearingsteel. The result is a level soil sur-face that is reconsolidated by thepacker roller. The working depthis set steplessly with the help ofcrank handles. Since the levellingdiscs are controlled by the packerroller, the setting does not need tobe changed for minor adjustmentsof the working depth.

Durable rubber mountingsThe levelling discs are attached tothe frame by durable rubbermountings which give every indi-vidual disc an impressively longlife by absorbing impacts andvibrations in stony soil.

Tine levellersOn Cultus 300 – 420, tine levellersare an alternative to the levellingdiscs. These tine levellers have asimpler construction and workwell on light soil with only a smallamount of plant residues.

Suspended scrapersThe ingenious and responsivescrapers swing from their moun-tings, which allows them to keepthe rollers clean even in tough anddifficult conditions. Adjustablearms with similarly adjustablewearing parts designed to matchthe contours of the roller ringsmean that any soil and harvesttrash that stick to the roller canbe efficiently removed.

The large Cultus models ranges from 4.2 to6.2 metre working width, and can be equip-ped according to requirements

Working width, the linkage between implementand tractor and the type of packer roller makeup the basic character of the Cultus. Choice oftine points, wing blades, shins and other optionsthen gives Cultus a conformation that suits theexisting requirements.

Frame height 85 cmCultus 420 - 620 has four axles plus a fifth bonusaxle on the drawbar for maximum space. Theframe height is 85 cm. Together, these measure-ments provide an unusually spacious construc-tion that allows soil and harvest trash to bemixed together and passed through the machine.Large amounts of straw cause no problems forCultus.

Tine spacing 20 cmA closer tine distribution gives more thoroughlycultivated soil, while a wider distribution leaves

a certain area uncultivated between the tines. The number of passes then determines the ac-tual area and volume cultivated. Cultus 420 has atine distribution of 22 cm, while the larger Cultus500 - 620 models have 20 cm.

Draught requirementFor Cultus 500 - 620, around 60 hp per metre wor-king width is recommended as the optimaldraught requirement. For Cultus 420, which has a22 cm tine distribution, the draught requirementis a bit lower. An important aspect to consider inchoice of working width for tractor size is thatthe higher the driving speed, the better the workresults.

MixIn and folding tineThe MixIn shin is standard on all models, whilethe folding tines are optional. They provide thepotential to vary draught requirement, workingwidth and tine distribution in order to match soilcultivation method to conditions in the field.

Working depth set from the cabMaximum working depth for Cul-tus extends to 25 cm, but the ma-chine also works very well atshallow cultivation. The optimalworking depth is normally 10 - 15cm. On Cultus 420 - 620 the wor-king depth is set hydraulicallyfrom the cab on the go.

Trials with seedboxEstablishment of winter rape usinga BioDrill on Cultus has been tes-ted in recent years. The trials anddemonstrations have gone welland the results appear promising.Evaluation of the project is nowunderway.

Cultus 300 - 400

The smaller Cultus models are mainlybased on the same components as the lar-ger Cultus series. The smaller Cultus mo-dels have three axles, 30 cm tinedistribution and the same strong and effec-tive Cultus tines.

Cultus 300 - 350 is available in both hydraulicallymounted and trailed models. Cultus 400 is onlyavailable as trailed. The trailed model is createdby simply mounting a drawbar on the hydrau-lically mounted machine. The MixIn shin is stan-dard on all models.

Rubber and steel rollerThe trailed model is transported on its roller, sothe rubber roller is supplied as standard. Therubber roller gives good reconsolidation and uni-form results. It also gives the machine a stableand safe ride in transport. On the hydraulicallycarried model, both the cage roller, the steel rol-ler and the rubber roller are available as stan-dard.

Working depth set with clipsOn Cultus 300 - 400 the working depth is set withclips on a cylinder in the centre of the machine. The same points and wing blades as on the largemodels can be mounted on the tine.

Draught requirementCultus 300 - 400 has three axles and a tine distri-bution of 30 cm. The three axles are placed 80 cmapart and the distance between the tines on eachaxle is 90 cm for maximum throughflow. The ma-chine requires around 35 hp/m working widthand is suitable for 90 - 160 hp tractor size.

Straw incorporation and depth control aretwo good reasons for the Gisselfeld estatein Denmark to invest in a Cultus 500. However, manager Kim Lundby is most im-pressed by the MixIn-shins on the CultusCobra tines. ‘The shins mean that the soil is cultivatedtwice in a single pass.’

Cultus best in testThis story began in autumn 2007, when the Gis-selfeld estate tested Cultus on its home ground. ‘We were impressed because it did such a goodjob’, explained Kim Lundby, who is manager ofthe estate and responsible for farming opera-tions. Cultus was not the only machine involvedin the test drives in autumn 2007, as other culti-vators were also put through their paces in thefield. ‘The combination of Cultus cultivation resultsand Väderstad’s machine quality made the deci-sion for us’, concluded Kim Lundby.

Straw incorporationStraw incorporation is the feature that has mostimpressed Kim Lundby at the end of the first au-

tumn season. Some winter wheat yielded up to12 tonnes per hectare in 2008 and high grain yields give rise to large amounts of straw thathas to be mixed into the soil. ‘But the cultivator has done a fantastic job withstraw incorporation.’After winter rye, they only needed two passeswith their new Cultus to mix in the straw. The estate’s Rapid with Crossboard and tworows of cultivator tines in the toolbar was able toestablish a new winter rye crop without strawcausing any problem in the tines.‘Cultus passed the toughest straw test with dis-tinction.’

Shin gives two cultivationsOther aspects that impress Kim Lundby are thedepth control and the range of possible varia-tions of Cultus.‘The depth control is excellent, so we can workat shallow depths at the surface or down to 25cm with the same machine.’ However, deep culti-vation uses diesel and demands horsepower andmakes Cultus hard to run, according to KimLundby, although he doesn’t blame the machinefor this.‘It’s not the fault of the cultivator that we want towork to depth occasionally when we need to loo-

23

sen the soil and mix in harvesttrash.’Whatever the task, work has to befast at Gisselfeld. Since Cultus canrace onwards at over 12 km/hour,cultivation is even better and theshins above the cultivator tinescome into their own. ‘The shins mean that the soil iscultivated twice in a single pass. The soil is thrown upwards andforwards, and is then cultivated asecond time’, explained KimLundby, making a circular move-ment through the air to illustratehow the stream of soil rotates andfalls back onto the soil surface toundergo a new pass with the tines.

Cheap in the long runAfter a complete first autumn sea-son at Gisselfeld, the machine hasshown its capability.‘To date, Cultus has fulfilled expec-tations. The machine is robust andthe rubber roller reconsolidates ina way that suits our soils.’ KimLundby has had good experience

of Väderstad machines in the past.‘We could have bought a cheapercultivator, but I don’t believe thatit would last as long with the de-mands we have on operating relia-bility. So in a few years’ time I amconvinced that our Cultus will becheap in the long run.’

More uniform emergence, decreased diesel consump-tion and fewer problemswith crusting are three ofthe benefits brought by Cul-tus to Stanislaw Bruchwaldin northern Poland. The re-liability of the machine iswhat he appreciates most.

Stanislaw Bruchwald combinespig production and arable on320 hectares on his farm Rogalein northern Poland. The au-tumn is labour-intensive, sincealmost 300 hectares have to bedrilled with winter rape, winterbarley, winter rye and winterwheat. All that remains in thespring is 30 hectares of springbarley.

Adjustable working depthFor the past few years he hasnot ploughed but uses a Cultus420 together with a disc imple-ment for shallow cultivation. He first uses the disc imple-ment regardless of precedingcrop, and then after 2 - 3 weekshe uses his Cultus 420. For au-tumn drilling he cultivates to

around 15 cm depth, while thedepth is increased to 25 cm be-fore winter rape. At the greatestworking depth, he has a workrate of 2.5 hectares per hourwith 50 mm points on the tines.A few days after Cultus cultiva-tion, the next crop is establis-hed with a Rapid seed drill.‘The results are fantastic’, dec-lared Stanislaw Bruchwald. In the past he had problemswith crusts on hills and slopesbut these have disappearednow due to harvest trash beingleft in the topsoil. The fields arealso better levelled and emer-gence is greatly improved, which he believes to be a resultof the uniform working depth ofCultus.

3700 litres of diesel savedThe old system with the ploughused 43 litres of diesel per hec-tare to establish a new crop. Now fuel consumption has dec-reased to 31.5 litres per hec-tare, mainly due to all thecultivations before and afterthe plough no longer being nee-ded. In total for his 320 hecta-res, this amounts to a saving ofalmost 3700 litres of diesel – a

tidy saving that can be veryuseful elsewhere.

Cultus reliability appre-ciatedIt is not only fuel costs thathave decreased by 30%. Equallyimportant is the time saving. ‘I appreciate the fact that thehours in the field have decrea-sed by around 40%’, said Stani-slaw Bruchwald. These areimportant hours for someonewho also has animals on hisfarm. The capacity was decisivefor him when he invested in hisCultus. However, most impor-tant of all is the quality andtrustworthiness of Väderstadmachines.‘Cultus is exceptionally reliablein all situations.’

Harvest trash is mixed in phe-nomenally well by Cultus, ac-cording to Swedish farmerCarl-Ragnar Orsmark. Therigid tines break up the soil, the MixIn-shins mix and theroller crushes. In two passesthe soil has turned black andwinter wheat drilling is aneasy task, even on heavy clay

In the very south of Sweden, Carl-Ragnar Orsmark runs ÅsbackaGård, a 300 hectare arable farm.Half his crops are established inthe autumn and the other half inthe spring. The soils are mainlyheavy clays with a clay content ofover 40%, and unfortunately thereare lots of stones. ‘These soils are no easy task whenit comes to cultivation’, he explai-ned.

Black soil after 2 x Cultus For a few years Carl-Ragnar Ors-mark operated using a home-builtcombination of an old Cultus with

spring tines linked together with aCarrier. However in 2005 the newCultus model with rigid tinescame out and Carl-Ragnar tested ademo machine. It was almost a mi-racle for him. ‘It was amazing! I stood at the sideand watched how the harvesttrash was mixed into the soil and Icould see the difference at once. There was only half as much trashleft on the surface compared withthe old Cultus model. It is truly astep forward.’ Now he makes two passes with hisCultus 420 before drilling winterwheat. Sometimes one pass isenough, but only in exceptionalcases. In the spring, sugarbeetand spring cereal are drilled di-rectly or after a surface cultiva-tion in areas where Cultus workedthe field in the autumn. But twopasses are the basic strategy. ‘The soil should then be black andit usually is, except for a bit oftrash on the surface.’

Breaks up and crushes He abandoned ploughing around2003 - 2004 to save diesel andtime. Ploughing took up 1 hourper hectare, plus a lot of time toget a finished seedbed. Now hehandles 2.5 - 3 hectares per hourwith Cultus. Two passes are usu-ally needed to decrease the diffe-rence compared with the plough, but there is still more time overfor other things. After ploughing itwas often difficult to establishwinter crops, but that is easierwith Cultus.‘The tines break up the soil, theshins mix and the packer rollercrushes clods in a single pass. That saves moisture for germina-tion.’

Cultus is a winning combination ofperformance and reliability. In Cul-tus, the strength required for reli-able soil cultivation is combinedwith a simple and robust construc-tion. The results are convincing, and are familiar to all those pro-gressive growers who have seenCultus transform newly-harvestedfields with very heavy trash into afinished seedbed in only 1 or 2 pas-

ses. The dominant role of Cultus atthe cutting edge of development isdue to its flexibility. The Cultus ma-chine can be tailor-made to the far-mer’s requirements. Workingwidth, tine distribution, points, wing blades, levellers and packerroller can be varied. This meansthat creative crop producers cantransform their own ideas aboutsoil cultivation into reality with

Cultus. The Cultus range includesworking widths from 3 to 6.2 met-res. The smaller models are avai-lable as both hydraulically carriedand trailed options. Regardless ofworking width, Cultus performsthe same excellent work in thefield and helps growers achieve op-timum soil cultivation for profi-table crop production.
