High Level Goals
• Long-term goals– Implement mathematics inquiry in ordinary math classes in four
CPS high schools.– Increase student independent research in mathematics.– Establish thriving student math research symposium with 75
papers.
• Short-term goals– Deliver a student math research symposium in spring of 2013 with
participation from schools across the district.– Hold citywide professional development activities on promoting
inquiry and research in mathematics classes.– Engage UIC or other research university as partners and student
mentors.– Secure one long-term corporate or individual sponsor of math
symposium.

Objectives
Long-term Objectives (3-5 Years)• Inquiry-based and writing activities included in mainstream math classes at six
target schools by 2013-2014• Increase number of students doing math projects for city science fair from 5 to
30 out of 300, and for STS from 0 to 10 by 2014-2015• Have at least one student or team attend Intel ISEF with a math project by
2014-2015
Short-term Objectives (12 months)• Engage 20+ students in math research leading to 20 papers submitted to math
symposium.• Deliver a stellar math symposium involving students, local mathematicians,
parents, school officials, and business in April 2013.• Engage 10 mentors in working with high-level projects.• Four teachers to complete PREP workshop on research in advanced high school
mathematics by June 22, 2012• Create and deliver 4 short (2-hour or half-day) professional development
sessions for Chicago math teachers with at least 20 participants, on including inquiry and writing in the mathematics classroom.
