Leaders of Men 24

First up lads, how longhave you been togetherand how did you meet? Brian: As a band we’ve beentogether since the end of 2011.We all worked together in CaptainAmericas in our teens, that waswhere we first met. We were all indifferent bands before this andwhen they ended we decided tomake a little Tallaght supergroup!

For the last two years we’ve beengigging, we’ve done some greatshows like Longitude andIndiependence, plus we’ve playedwith Mumford and Sons, JakeBugg and the Stereophonics, which was amazing. As well as this we’ve been churning outdemos, which has got us to where we are now and our firstsingle which is called For Want Of A Better Word and is out onValentine’s Day.

Could you tell us aboutthe single?Brian: It’s kind of a tongue incheek song about adultery and a

guy who cuts off his nose to spitehis face. It went to radio at thestart of January, Paul McLooneplayed it on his show on TodayFM and they named us Irish Act ofThe Week which we weredelighted with. The reaction so farhas been amazing, we’re reallyexcited and our management isreally excited. We’re shooting thevideo for it next week, it’s going tobe very controversial. There’s nopoint me telling you anythingabout it because it’ll ruin thewhole thing!

Is the single off aforthcoming album then? It’s off the EP Alexander Housewhich is also out next month..

How would you describe Leaders Of Men musically? Brian: I suppose we’d be indierock and roll. Other people havesaid we sound like Interpol or TheVerve, which is great to hear anda massive compliment.

What’s the story behindthe band name? Brian: There’s not a huge storybehind it really. The usual one wesay is Bono came to us in a dream!Ed: It was literally the first namethat came to us. It soundedpretentious so we liked it!Dean: It gives us something tolive up to!Brian: It’s also the name of a JoyDivision song and we can relate tothe whole suburban aspect thatcame with them.Dean: It can be really polarizingat first when you say the namepeople sometimes roll their eyes! We’re all humble people thoughreally!

Who writes most of thesongs? Brian: It’s very much a collectivething; everything gets donebetween the five of us. We’ll get afew chords together, I’ll throw amelody over it, bring it to thejamming room and then everyonegets involved. It’s a five way thingwhich is great as you’ve got five

filters to get through.

Does this make for a lotof rows? All: Yes!Ed: Nobody beats about thebush, if we think something iscrap we’ll say it.Dean: It’s all for the greater good though.Brian: Yeah nobody takesoffence; if he (Ed) tells me “That’ssh*te” I don’t get upset about it.It’s healthy and it works, so far wehaven’t killed each other!

What has been thehighlight of your careeras a band so far? Brian: The biggest buzz so farwas last year when we got signedto Big Life Management. Theyalso look after The Verve, ScissorsSisters, George Michael, LisaStansfield.

The guy in charge of the label isJazz Summers who we would allbe big fans of and he’s someonewe always wanted to work with.He was over here last year at aScissor Sisters show in TheOlympia and someone gave himone of our demos. He loved it; hesaid it reminded him of The Vervewhich was very exciting or us.After that he took us over toLondon to record four songs. Hewanted to hear what new materialwe were working on, we played itfor him and he said that’s an EP,which became Alexander House.

Did the label try tochange anything about the band?Brian: No not all, we knew a lotabout them going into itregarding how they work. Jazzlets his artists evolve. He’ll pointyou in the right direction but he’ll

INTERVIEWBy Padraig Conlon

Leaders of Men are a local five piece indie band who are just about to release their very first single.

InTallaght Magazine met up with three of the lads: lead singer Brian Ashe, guitarist Ed Porter and drum-mer Dean Byrne to chat about this exciting moment in the group’s career, their story so far and theirplans for what we hope will be a very successful 2014 for the band.

25never change anything.

Do you guys all still live in Tallaght? Ed: Yeah we all do apart from our bass player who hasemigrated to town!

Is there any rivalrybetween the Tallaghtbands? Brian: No not all, we all get onreally well; we look out for eachother. There’s a great scene hereat the moment with a lot ofbrilliant bands and we’d love to alldo some kind of festival togetherhere in Tallaght. It’s somethingwe’ve all talked about; it’s justtough getting everyone togetherat the same time. It will happenbut we want to do it right. It’d beincredible to do it in the Civic anddo it for charity.

What are your thoughtson the current Irish music scene? Brian: There are a lot of goodthings happening in this countryright now, there’s a lot ofrecognition and focus being puton it. Hosier have just got a hugedeal, Kodaline are doing reallywell, there’s so much coming outthis year, it’s very very healthy andit’s great to be part of it. When wego to London they all know what’shappening here, which wasn’t thecase 10 years ago.

What can people who go to one of your gigs expect? Dean: They can expect a showthat’s really really loud and reallyenergetic. We’re not going to playanything we don’t like ourselves. There’s no filler tracks at our gigs,we’re genuine, what you see iswhat you get.

If you could go on toursupporting any band in the world who would you pick? Dean: It would have to be U2because they’re the biggest no?!Ed: I’d say Interpol.Brian: I agree, they’re our band,we love them.Dean: Yeah I suppose I’d have toagree with the lads there, Interpolit is! They seem so untouchable;no one ever gets near them. That’d be the dream.Brian: It’d be a dream for themto work with us! I’m sure if youasked them that question that’swhat they’d say! I can see theheadline now: “Paul Banks SaysYes To Leaders Of Men”!

How much have youevolved as a band? Ed: We’ve evolved hugely, even in the last six months, probably becausesubconsciously we allrealise this is it, thepressure is on now,if we’re gonna doit we have to do itnow. We’re notgetting anyyounger, I’m 27which is adangerous age! I’m either going todie this year or dosomethingamazing!Brian: We wereactually just talkingabout this ourselvesabout 20 minutesbefore we sat downto talk with you. When we startedout we mademusic that wasall about going

against the odds, doingsomething that you shouldn’t do,making songs that were 6/7minutes long, very self indulgent. We’ve reined that in now a bit butkept what we wanted to. Dean: We really notice when wego back and listen to ourselvesfrom two years ago, you can hearit’s the same band but we’vegotten better.

Finally lads what are yourplans for 2014? Brian: What we’re focusing onright now is the release of thesingle next month. It’s our firsttime having a single on the radioand we’re all really excited to seewhich way it goes, either in thebin or really well, whatever,

because at least then we’ll know. But we’re very confident in thesong. We want to play a festival aswell and we’re working on ouralbum which is due out near theend of the year. Every day of theweek we’re in the studio working, writing songs. Ed: Last year we playedLongitude and we didn’t evenhave a single out so dependingon how the single goes will decidewhat festival we do. We’re just innegotiations at the moment.Brian: If the single goes tonumber one we’ll be able tocharge a lot more!Dean: And pick what stage we’reon, that’s the way it works!Ed: Fingers crossed then!

ROBOCOP By Rachel Lynch

Most of us will haveheard the title of thisfilm before, and if youhaven’t already seenthe original well thenyou are in for a treat.

If you have, well then it’s timeto see how far technology hascome over the past fewdecades.

RoboCop, released thisFebruary, is a remake of the1987 film of the same nameand is a science fiction actionfilm directed by José Padilha. It is the year of 2028,multinational conglomerateOmniCorp is at the center ofrobot technology. Overseas, their drones have been used bythe military for years and it'smeant billions for OmniCorp'sbottom line. Now OmniCorpwants to bring theircontroversial technology to the

home front, and they see agolden opportunity to do it.When Alex Murphy played byJoel Kinnaman a lovinghusband, father, and good copdoing his best to stem the tideof crime and corruption inDetroit is critically injured by acar bomb in the line of duty,OmniCorp sees their chance fora part-man, part-robot policeofficer. OmniCorp envisions aRoboCop in every city and evenmore billions for theirshareholders, but they nevercounted on one thing, there isstill a man inside the machine, pursuing justice.

Although it is obvious thatthere will be a number ofdifferences between theremake and the original we areled to believe the basic premiseis more or less intact. If youhave seen the original, thetrailer will confirm that much atleast. The advancement ineffects in the short threeminute trailer makes itcompletely different to the oneof 1987. The action sequencesseem to be much slicker andthe creativity from directorPadilha is clear from the onset.

37Disneyland park is about toget a MAJOR Star Wars VIImakeover

After dropping more than $4 billion forLucasfilm, we knew Disney was goingto double down on Star Wars — andit sounds like the next phase of theplan involves Disneyland. In a big way.The Tomorrowland area of theAnaheim theme park is set for amassive overhaul, which willincorporate elements from theupcoming Star Wars VII, according tosome new reports. So, yes, that meanssome extremely lucky theme parkgeeks now know all the juicy plotdetails. Yeah, we’re jealous.

There were apparently already someplans in the works to incorporate theStar Wars brand into Tomorrowland, but now it sounds like we’ll be gettingthat full-fledged Star Wars Land wealways dreamed about. Themysterious new Episode VII elementswill reportedly be combined with theexisting plan to add attractions such asa Millennium Falcon walk-thru, aTatooine cantina and a speeder bikerace set in an Ewok village.

So why did they go ahead and let thepark folks in on the Episode VII planalmost two years before the film’splanned 2015 opening date? Becauseit takes an even longer time toredesign and build a theme park, andeven with the heads-up, it’ll probablybe 2017 before Star Wars Land canopen wide.

Bryan Cranston rumoured to have signed on as Lex Luthor in Man of Steel 2

The rumor mill continues to churn over whomight play Lex Luthor in the Man of Steelsequel, but a new report indicates that one ofthose old names might’ve been right all along.

The hosts of the Team Amasian podcast claimthey have confirmed that famed bald manBryan Cranston will play classic Supermanbaddie Lex Luthor in Batman vs. Superman.Cranston was rumored for the role off and onfor most of 2013, along with everyone fromBradley Cooper to Mark Strong.

So is it true? It’s certainly possible, thoughobviously unconfirmed. Cranston is a buzzyactor with some major cred from his stint onBreaking Bad, and he’s dabbled in big sci-fiflicks with projects like the Total Recall reboot.Heck, he also voiced Jim Gordon in theanimated DC film Batman: Year One — sothere’s a definite interest in the genre.

Though he comes from humble beginnings onMalcolm in the Middle, and his Total Recall rolewas less than memorable, we still thinkCranston would be a great pick for Luthor. Hewas more than enough of a badass inBreaking Bad to prove he has the substance togo toe to toe with Superman, Batman andeven some rival meth dealers.

Music 38

GAVIN DOYLEBlushBy Padraig Conlon

Nineteen year old local singer songwriter GavinDoyle recorded the very first single of his career just before Christmas.

Titled Blush it is a bittersweet ballad that deals with the emotions felt at thebeginning of a relationship and isdelivered by Gavin on his acousticguitar. The song, which Gavin wroteover two years ago, was inspired by aprevious relationship, so all the feelingsexpressed are genuine and heartfelt.

As first singles go this is a brilliant pieceof work and Gavin should be very proudof himself. If the song gets the level ofattention it deserves it will do very well, the twin themes of love, and theemotions it inspires, are universal oneswhich eveyone can relate to.

Last August Gavin appeared on the RTÉTV show The Hit where he performedBlush. The song was well received andGavin was given praise andencouragement from music industryheavy weights like producer SteveLillywhite and Westlife member NickyByrne. In the competition Blush was one of two songs chosen by RyanO’Shaughnessy from a pool of six to go up against against singer Brian

Kennedy's selections. Ultimately Gavin waspipped as O’Shaughnessy chose the other song.Ryan O'Shaughnessy co-produced this single, alongside Aidan James and studio owner CianDonohue, which was recorded in Block C Studiosin Ballymount. The proceeds of this song aregoing towards a local community charity ‘NINA for Life Suicide Awareness'.

Gavin is currently a student at Pulse College inWindmill Studios where he is studying for a BAHons Degree in Music Production.

Regular readers of InTallaght Magazine may alsorecognise Gavin from his involvement with TeenLine and the charity single Never Alone whichwas released last year. Along with Luke ClerkinGavin co wrote the song which charted well oniTunes, even passing out legends like Eminemand Artic Monkeys along the way!

Gavin is also in a band called 48:Hours, some ofwhom also feature on Blush. He and the bandwill be playing at a fundraising gig in aid ofTeen-Line Ireland in The Unitairan Church onStephen’s Green on Saturday March 1st alongwith Mongoose, Theresa McKenna, Aaron DavidNestor and Dan Coxon, SecondHarmony andCalvin Hynes and Kevin Rooney. Justin (J) Casey is another very talented localmusician who has also just released a debutsingle. Still Wondering is a beautiful, deeplypersonal song which deals with Justin'sexperience of two massively traumatic eventsin his young life; the loss of his father tosuicide three years ago and the death of hisbest friend.

In spite of the heavy lyrical content of thesong it is remarkably upbeat and filled withhope. The opening of the track, with thepiano and snare drum, reminds me a little ofGreen Day's When September Ends beforethe vocals come in and Justin sings “Stillwondering why you went away, not a daygoes by I don’t say. Still wondering how I'll find my way, through this darkened land I pray.”

The first verse deals with his father's suicideand the slow singing style of the start of thesong changes to a rap which works really welland makes the song even punchier.

After dealing with the loss of his friend in thesecond verse the song finishes up with Jwondering how he will carry on and why“you left without saying goodbye.” Anyonewho has ever lost a loved one will really relate to this song big style. It is a beautifultrack and J should be commended for beingso honest and open in what is an excellentdebut single.

The world famous CESshow took place in earlyJanuary and featuredsome of the world’snewest and mostinnovative inventions.

With Sony and LG all makingmajor announcements the onewhich caught our eye the mostwas Samsung and their prototypeof the world’s first curved television. The television starts outas an 85-inch flat screen UHD TV,however with the press of onebutton the television transformsinto a curved TV. Following thetremendous reception for bothtelevisions received at CES, and inthe days after Samsung announced the inevitable, thatthey would be making both products available to consumers.

“Given the tremendous media and industry reception for these newproducts, we are excited to bringour 105” Curved UHD TV and 85”

Bendable UHD TV to consumersaround the world,” said HS Kim,executive vice president of the visual display business at Samsung Electronics.

The bendable TV is amazing andthe videos from CES are wellworth a watch, the bending of theTV only takes about seven seconds to complete its magictrick. The Consumer ElectronicsShow, CES, was first held in 1967and it is only since 1998 that theshow has become a yearly eventheld in Las Vegas. Over the yearsmany innovative products hadtheir debut at CES including theVideo Cassette recorder (VCR) in1970, the Compact Disc Player in1981, the Digital Versatile Disc(DVD) in 1996 and the Plasma TVin 2001 to name but a few.

One of the other announcementsat CES which caught the attention of InTallaght was the announcement of the Playstation

Game 42

FORZA MOTORSPORT 5 By Colm O’Muirí

Forza Motorsport 5is an exclusive titlefor Microsoft’s Xbox One next generation console and was one of the launch titles for the console.

As with all of the titles so far onboth next gen consoles thegraphics on show in this gameare phenomenal. As you wouldexpect, all the cars look greatand even better though is thesound of the engines whichreally add to the game’s overallexperience.

It is not only the cars which arevisually perfect, it has to be saidthat the circuits, spectators andcrew are all impressive. Withsome games it feels as thoughthe spectators are after thoughtsbut I was really impressed withwhat Turn 10 Studios have donewith the game and they havereally gone into detail on this.

As I said above, the cars andcircuit both look visuallyamazing and whatever view youchoose to race with, whether itis from the cockpit or outside

the car, you will not bedisappointed. It is worth notinghowever that you don’t see asmuch of the spectacular sceneryon offer from the cockpitcamera inside the car as youwould with the camera fromoutside the car.

Forza have truly outdonethemselves with this latestoffering from the franchisegiving the user a multitude ofchoices with 200 cars on offerfrom over 50 differentmanufacturers including Mazda,Audi, Volkswagen, Subaru andmany more.

Forza continues to impress withthe number of circuits on offerwith 14 amazing places tochoose from. Some of the trackson offer are Silverstone, theIndianapolis Motor Speedwayand the Circuit De Catalunya.

My personal favourite thoughhas got to be the infamous TopGear track. Like with everythingelse on offer in this game itlooks great and withcommentary from JeremyClarkson, Richard Hammond orJames May also available, it is

definitely going to be a hit withfans of Top Gear.

Forza 5 is a truly amazing racinggame and is sure to delightanyone lucky enough to have anXbox One at their disposal.

Gran Turismo 6is the sixth instalmentin the Gran Turismofranchise but thetwelfth overall in theseries from developerPolyphony Digital. The game is exclusiveto Sony and isavailable on thePlaystation 3, there are no plans asof yet to release Gran Turismo 6for the PS4.

43

Gran Turismo 6 looks great buthaving reviewed Forza 5 for theXbox One it just isn’t up to par,and never would be as it is noton a next gen console. Howeverthe cars and circuits look greatand it boasts something whichForza or any other racing gamecannot compete with: the cars

on offer and the number ofthem to choose from.

Gran Turismo gives you anastonishing 1,200 cars to choosefrom including Ferrari, AstonMartin and Bentley along with37 tracks including Silverstone,Brands Hatch and Matterhorn. The overall graphics in GranTurismo are very good but otherthan the car in front or behindthe overall trackside experienceis very bland, with very littlehappening and will hopefully beaddressed for future instalments.

To mark the 15th anniversary ofGran Turismo there is also ananniversary edition of the gamewith 20 extra cars and numerousother features exclusive to theanniversary edition.

Gran Turismo is a game withoutmany flaws and is sure to be ahit with fans of the franchise anddriving games alike but havingseen the beauty of the next gengames you can’t help butwonder how much better thisgame would be on the PS4.

view the new model. There Ispoke with sales manager DerekHamilton who told of hisexcitement of the new arrival:“This car lives up to itsexpectations, it’s equally as good,if not better than the last car. I’vedriven the car myself and itdoesn’t just look nice it also driveslovely. Even the entry model has anice spec on it”.

The appearance of the model hasvaried slightly but not the extentthat it cannot be recognised as aQashqai. The new model is everso slightly longer, wider and lowerthan its predecessor.

The interior is where Nissan reallyoutdoes itself. The soft touch black

Motors 44

plastic that surrounds the pianodashboard trim only adds to thestylishness of the car.

All the controls seem nice andsolid. They are also easy to usewhether you go for the standardlayout or the higher spec models. The new model is also packed fullof useful storage which is greatfor large families.

Practicality is certainly Qashqai’sstrength. There is plenty of headand leg room and the boot is oneof the largest in its class. It evenhas false floor panels that let youdivide up the space or change theload height.

Plenty of small SUV style cars offer acomfortable ride or agile handling

but the Qashqai manages tocombine the two.

The Qashqai is one of the quietestand classiest cars of its kind, it’salso the most practical and apersonal favourite of mine todrive. When you consider howwell this model will hold its valueover the years, as well as reliabilityyou are investing in a car almostfor life.

Head down to WindsorBelgard today to test drivethe all new Nissan Qashqai, you won’t be disappointed.

NISSANQASHQAIBy Rachel Lynch

The Qashqai has been a massive success forNissan, and has beenconsistently one of the best selling cars on the road.

When it was first launched back in2007 it virtually had this class toitself. Now it is competing againstmany other rivals, yet stillmanages to come out on top. Thenew 2014 model is without doubtone of the best small SUV orcrossover cars on the market. Itoffers you the customer 4x4styling but without the extrarunning costs.

Book 46JOHN LE CARRÉThe Constant GardenerBy Gwen Taylour

This is the second le Carré novel that I’ve read and also the second that I’ve reviewed for the magazine.

The first I borrowed from my boyfriend, thisone from my mother. It just goes to showthe wide reach of le Carré’s demographic.Judging by this novel, I’d be keen to readmore of his 23 books. Considering that hewas 70 when he wrote this one, it pulseswith the energy of a much younger man.The story was a bit slow to get going and forthe first few chapters I doubted whether Iwould enjoy it as much as The Spy WhoCame in from the Cold, but once the storyreally got going, I found it hard to put down.

The novel opens in northern Kenya with the gruesome murder of Tessa Quayle, young, beautiful, and dearly beloved tohusband Justin. When Justin sets out on apersonal odyssey to uncover the mystery ofher death, what he finds could make himnot only a suspect among his owncolleagues, but a target for Tessa's killers as well.

A master chronicler of the betrayals ofordinary people caught in political conflict, le Carré portrays the dark side of unbridledcapitalism as only he can. In The ConstantGardener he tells a compelling, complexstory of a man elevated through tragedy as Justin Quayle, amateur gardener, agingwidower, and ineffectual bureaucrat, discovers his own natural resources and the extraordinary courage of the woman he barely had time to love.

In an interview with The Observer, le Carréexplained what he intended the novel to beabout: “At the level that is closest to me it'sabout somebody making an interior journeyand discovering, after a flawed life, somekind of morality. Beyond that it's about thesame subject that I've written about rightfrom the beginning, which is man'srelationship with the institutions he creates -whether they're intelligence institutions orcommercial.”

I thought the story was a fascinating look atthe pharamaceutical industry and thecorruption of governments and bureaucratsby big business.

I found the cosy colonial atmosphere atthe start a great foil to the raw danger

of the latter half of the story. It wasexciting and surprising and

though the very end didn’tquite live up to the

proceeding momentum, Iactually thought it quite

fitting. I have yet to seethe film but if it is any

where as good asthe book, I’m in

for a treat!

About The Author

John le Carré is the pen name of DavidCornwell. 53Looking forward to 2014

We look forward to the sporting year of2014 with some trepidation, we have noWorld Cup to look forward to but followingthe draw in December many of us arealready planning our late nights nextsummer watching our second favoriteteams. And we await the draw for the 2016Euros to see just how hard of a task thedream team of MonKeano have.

The Irish Rugby Team may have lured usinto a false sense of security with theirrecent heroics against New Zealand andmany will view the upcoming Six Nationswith suspicion. With Ireland having to faceboth France and England in their own backyard it is the harder of the two sets offixtures to complete. On a provincial levelthe recent results have seen Ulster, Leinsterand Munster qualify for the last 8 of theHeineken Cup and a mouth watering AllIreland final in Cardiff is very much on thecards.

On the GAA front Dublin will find it hard tomatch the achievements of 2013, back toback All Ireland titles have been hard tocome by and if Dublin don’t win Sam againit will be viewed by many as a disappoint-ment, such are the expectations.

The Hurlers will look to improve on their AllIreland semi final defeat but with a youngClare team rampant, and Kilkenny sure tobe looking to settle old scores it will be ahard task.

Domestically the soccer season due to startin the spring is sure to be the most openfor years at the time of writing it looks likeit will be a hard fought battle withShamrock Rovers, St Pats, Sligo Rovers andDundalk all habouring title ambitions.

Shamrock Rovers will hope to hit theground running after the misfiring start tothe last two seasons and the Hoopedfaithful will hope for a flying start!

With the Winter Olympics on in Russia inFebruary, the Commonwealth Games on inJuly, as well as the ubiquitous Golf Events,Racing Festivals and others 2014 is sure tobe an action packed year for the sportsfans! Bring it on!

Martin O’Neill 54

What has been the main difference for you between club and internationalmanagement? It was really strange after thePoland game because you saycheerio to the players, and then Idon’t see them collectively untilMarch. I felt that was reallystrange. It didn't really hit homefor a day or two.

What have you beenworking on since then? I've been going to watch a lot ofgames to see the players in actionfor their clubs. You have aproblem at times going tomatches as you're not surewhether the player will be playing.

You’re hoping that (Wes)Hoolohan might get on at somestage or might start the game butthat is totally the manager’sprerogative. I would never ask themanager beforehand. As a club

manager, I wouldn't want amanager to ask me about myteam. Going to Everton you canbe fairly sure Seamus (Coleman)or James (McCarthy) will beinvolved. Stoke likewise one ortwo of the lads will always beplaying. It's been very interesting.

Would you ever adviseany of your players tothink about moving clubs to enhance theirinternational chances? Absolutely not, there was nothingthat irritated me more as a clubmanager than to find out that acouple of my players who I hadfallen out with were playinginternational football and theinternational manager said thatthey should move.

I do not want to be runningaround telling Wes Hoolohan heshould do this or that. He mightn'tbe playing regularly for Norwichthis season but I thought he was

excellent for us against Latvia lastmonth. I wouldn't not picksomeone because they are notplaying regularly for their club butit does make it easier to pick themif they are playing more regularly.

Have you spoken to the players since thePoland game? No I haven't and I’m not going tomake a habit of talking to theplayers all the time, they haveheavy club commitments at thistime. Just let them get them outof the way.

Shay Given has recentlysaid he would beinterested in resuminghis international career, what do you think about that? I would not discount that at all. Ihaven't spoken to Shay but Iwould like to at some stage, if hesays 'I'm back' then we'll look intoit. But I am having a conversation

here about somebody I haven'tactually spoken to. I know Shayand I've spoken to him a numberof times but that was before I tookthe job on.

I may be a million miles out of myground because he may have nointention of coming back, but Icertainly wouldn't discount it if I'dhad that conversation and he wasthinking about coming back.

What are your thoughtson the new 24 teamformat for the nextEuropeanChampionships? It’s nice to hear that some peoplehave said that we’ve alreadyqualified, it means that I can putmy feet up and not worry aboutit! Ah no being serious it isimportant we get our ranking upso we are seeded second for thedraw for the qualifiers in February.

I must admit I didn’t know untilJohn told me how importantthose particular things are. Hementioned some weeks ago howimportant it is to win certainfriendlies. I thought it was only afriendly and it didn’t count butthey do seem to count. I wasn’taware of that.

Are you alarmed that weare now ranked so low? We are where we are, it’s been adisappointing year and we’vedropped from 41 to 67; that’swhere we stand.

Do I want to improve it? ObviouslyI do. Are you going to improve itby winning some matches? Yes.Do I always want to take the easyoption? I don’t think so. Do I wantto get absolutely thrashed insome matches, with resulting

Republic of Ireland manager Martin O Neill held his end of year pressconference last month and InTallaght Magazine was there to hear thenew gaffer’s thoughts and put a few questions of our own to him.

InTallaghtMaster47.qxp_Layout 1 22/01/2014 18:14 Page 54

55consequences for confidence ofplayers? I’m not so sure I reallywant that either. Are we going towin a game of no benefit to us?I’ve no idea. But I will formulateone. If we are going to drop tofifth seed potentially for the WorldCup, of course I have to have alook at that.

Will you be taking morean interest in the LeagueOf Ireland than theprevious regime? I think someone possiblymentioned here the fact that itmight just be a PR exercise if Istart coming to matches in theLeague of Ireland. That might beright. But then I was remindedthat about seven or eight playerscurrently playing League ofIreland football before they weretransferred to England.

So you never know; there mightjust be someone who is goodenough and playing here –maybe two or three – and whocould within a year be playingPremiership football and thenhopefully for the Republic so wewill be monitoring that.

Finally Martin there has been talk thatyourself and the newmanagement team aregoing to use the “Granny Rule” in order to bring in some newfaces into the squad? As a player I was never a big fanof the Granny rule but being apractical man I would be reluctantto be viewed as foolish for failingto recruit talent to the Irish causeso we will pursue new recruits inthe new year, but we will not bebegging anyone. I’d like theplayers to have some enthusiasm

about wanting to do it. I mightglean that from other sources andI probably would do buteventually, when I get to talk tothe player, I’d like him to bebursting with enthusiasm. If heisn’t, well I can’t say that’s the end.I might have to do a bit ofpersuading but if I’m having to doan awful lot of persuading thenI’m not wildly sure it’s worth it.

When we were in NorthernIreland we had Jimmy Nichollwho was actually born in Canada, but spent all his life in Belfast.Chris Nicholl was actually born inEngland. Did I ever think Chrisever never wanted to play forNorthern Ireland? Absolutely not.

In fact, I loved him playing inthe team as he was great forus: so strong, he gave us a bitof protection at the back. Hehad an English voice but Inever viewed him in any otherway other than playing forNorthern Ireland.

Fast forward to now, whatever therules are, as you say Jack usedthem to his advantage and inthose days I don’t thinkanyone complainedbecause the

Republic hadn’t any real successin a long time and Jack broughtsuccess.

If he brought success with RayHoughton having a Scottishaccent, who really cared? You talkabout the ethics and the processof eligibility but if other countriesare doing it and you felt becauseyou had a stand on it, or didn’t doit to your detriment, I think peoplewould probably pronounce you asrather foolish perhaps.

If you are not stretching it beyondbelief, well, I think I would have touse it. If I thought someone withinthese rules might improve ourteam I would use it.”

If they’re unable to get intosomeone else, I know it seems tocheapen it somewhere along theway. At this minute, those are therules and whether I like them ornot, I’m going to go with them. We don’t have a phenomenalchoice of players so I will go withit. If their heart is seriously notreally in it I think you might beable to suss that relatively quickly.

If you’re asking me here to sitand pontificate onsomething,I’m not going todo it. Growing up, would Ihave agreed with therules that are set inplace? No. I wouldn’thave done. Now that I’vereached maturity, or

supposed to be mature, then it's different!

Jonathan Roche 56

Could you tell our readers how did the newteam come about?Well we have prepared for thisover the last two years. We firstapplied for it in July 2012, whichwas rejected and we appliedagain this year and it wasaccepted. We did also approach St Patricks Athletic and SligoRovers and they had no interest in it, Sligo are in the ConnachtLeague and St Pats had nointerest whatsoever.

So what is the club's motivation behind this? We're doing this because the clubsgot rid of the A Championship, wewere one of the clubs that didn'twant to get rid of it but the rest ofthe clubs did and since that there'sbeen a gap between the 19's andthe first team where there'snowhere for players to play. This isa problem we've had over the lasttwo years and the only solutionwe feel is the First Division. It

marks a significant aspect in thedevelopment of the club, on thefootball side of things and itshould create player pathways foryears to come and also fulfils allthe football ambitions we havewith regard to winning leaguetitles and bringing playersthrough.

Another big aspect of this is is toput the club in a position to beable to attract the best playersfrom Dublin and beyond to ourschoolboy set up. This will make apathway for players not to go tothe UK on very very smallscholarship programmes. Theycan now actually sign for us at 16as they'll have three differentpathways now, our under 19's, our First Division team and ourfirst team. We believe this willattract a regular flow of playersinto our first team squad. If ityields one or two a year, brilliant. At the moment it is difficult tobring a 17 year old into the first

team. If they have been playing inthe First Division this makes it alot easier.

Is this a long term development or are you justgoing to give it one seasonand see how it goes?Yes it is as we've got a minimumcommitment of three years. Wehave read with interest thenegative responses from otherclubs towards the FAI forapproving the proposal but wedid attempt to canvass opinion,we did ask two clubs. Hopefullysome clubs who have said theywould like to do it will do it nextyear, which will make the divisionstronger.

What is the rule regardingplaying first team playersin the First Division? We're only going to be allowed toplay three outfield players and agoal keeper from the first teamsquad. We will be naming a first

Just before Christmas came confirmation that Rovers will enter a B Team in the First Division. We caught up with chairman JonathanRoche to find out more about this major new development for the club.

InRovers57team squad at the start of theseason and work off that. This isall about developing players, it'snot about us gaining anadvantage and having our firstteam players playing. The FirstDivision has changed dramaticallyin the last ten years, it's a youngleague now, the average age ofthe players in it is 22, it's not like itwas years ago.

Can this new team getpromoted or play in the cups?No we can't get promoted and wecan't enter the cups so it's very simple just 28 games, 14 home 14 away. We will be playing thehome games at Tallaght Stadium. This is a significant investment forthe club, financially andlogistically, there's a lot of fixturesand a lot of players involved.

How will these extragames effect the pitch?I don't think it will effect itbecause it's summer football. Sofar the pitch has always stood upto everything and I think thestadium are very confident ofbeing able to accommodategames on a Friday and Sunday. Itwon't obviously be every week.Season ticket holders will get infree to the First Division games, one ticket two teams.

Do you think if other Premier Division clubsfollow Rovers and enterteams in the First Divisionthat the quality of thepromoted teams may notbe up to standard? If a team goes up they generally then have to balancetheir squad to fit the standardthey will be playing at anyway soin that regard it won't be different.

Who is going to be

the manager of the new team? The manager will come from theexisiting backroom staff. EitherColin Hawkins or Noel White.

So have you got manynew posts to fill ie. newphysios, coaches etc?Well it's a club initiative so everyoneat the club has bought into it, thephysios, the medical staff, coaches –everyone has bought into it and willnow be behind it. On someoccasions both teams are going tobe playing on the same night, whichwill be weird. So we're going to bebusy! It's going to be good for thearea because I feel we're going toget decent crowds for the first division games so more people willbe needed for the stadium.

What is your target forthat team, win the FirstDivision?Really to develop players, that's it.We can't go up and winning thatleague isn't really important. Allwe want is to be bringing throughtwo or three players from thatteam every year, that's the target.

So it's all change off thepitch as well with thenew shirt sponsor andnew Warrior kit?Yes it is, the new home jersey isnearly sold out already, I think wesold nearly 500 jerseys beforeChristmas which was great. We hadPepper on the sleeve last year so wehave dealt with them before. Theseason ticket sales are going well,we've kept the prices the same and of course they get the First Divisiongames also. Because we don't haveEurope we're hoping to have somebig friendlies lined up for thesummer. Obviously a friendly doesn'treplace playing in Europe, we hopeto have them confirmed soon.

HIS OR HERSBy Mari Maxwell

The lipstick stood between them. Decadent brown. Sheer. A gold tubeon the kitchen table.

“It’s not mine,” Annie told her husband. “I don’t do browns.” “Who doyou suppose?”

There were no answers. The puzzle endured with the arrival ofchocolate scented mascara. The mocha swirl eye shadow paletteappeared next. The mystery remained for another week. By then theentire neighbourhood knew.

The milkman and the newspaper boy hadn’t missed the first hints. The O’Briens next door, and even Fr. Martin down at the priory knewevery sordid detail.

Their son Mark wasn’t who he appeared to be.

Mari’s work has appeared online and in print publications inthe USA and Ireland. Among them: FlashFlood:Flooding forNational Flash-Fiction Day 2013, Poetry 24, A New Ulster, The Galway Review, Beyond the Diaper Bag, Haiku J,Crannog, Revival, Boyne Berries, and Barbie Bazaar andCoping magazines.
