Majority Of Dubs WantDirectly Elected Mayor

Nearly two thirds of those sur-veyed in Dublin City Council’s‘Your Dublin Your Voice’ surveyare in favour of a directly electedmayor, which Dublin Chamber ofCommerce believes is vital forreform and development.

The survey took the responses ofover 1,200 people from eachLocal Authority area into ac-count, having asked questionsabout the form and function thatthe office of a DEM (DirectlyElected Mayor) might take.

“All over the world, mayors withstrong executive powers and realvision are transforming theircities and making a real and tan-gible difference to the lives oftheir citizens,” said Gina Quin,Dublin Chamber chief executive.“Over the past decade, DublinChamber has championed theconcept of a directly electedmayor for Dublin with the pow-ers required to drive efficiencyand to promote the region inter-nationally.”

A plebiscite will be held next Mayto determine whether the citi-zens of Dublin wish to see achange in the system.

Before that happens, a forum ofDublin’s four local authorities, chaired by Lord Mayor OisínQuinn, will discuss proposals fora directly elected mayor.

Following a public consultation, their proposals will be presentedto Phil Hogan TD, Minister forthe Environment, Community &Local Government.

“Dublin needs a champion whowill be directly accountable to thepeople of Dublin as a whole onissues of regional importance.Such a champion would marketthe region internationally as anattractive location, drive the re-gional integration of infrastruc-ture, and provide coordinatedregional leadership,” said Quin.

“To achieve this, the forum mustensure its recommendations in-clude real executive powers andaccountability that cuts acrossthe four local authorities.”

News 10SVP Want You To MakeYour Voice Heard

The Society of St Vincent de Paul(SVP) has urged the public to support its campaign to end austerity budgets.

Make Your Voice Heard began online last month at www.svp.ie/yourvoice

In his quarterly commentary on social justice, SVP National President, Geoff Meagher, said:“The people we assist and thosewho are struggling throughout Ireland have suffered enough.

“We urge all those who want fairness and an end to austeritybudgets to go online atwww.svp.ie/yourvoice andmake their voice heard.

“All people in Ireland deserve a living income in and out of workbut the level of austerity imposedover the last six budgets has madethis aspiration impossible for thou-sands of individuals and families.”

Mr Meagher said SVP acknowl-edges that the public finances mustbe placed on a sustainable path.“But we believe that Governmentcan choose to close the gap between Ireland's revenue and expenditure while protecting vulnerable people and the servicesthey rely on,” he stated.

“Government should seriously examine the alternative optionsavailable in the areas of stimulatinggrowth, improving efficiencies andgenerating revenue from corpora-tions and individuals with higherincomes and assets that can affordto make a greater contribution toIreland's recovery.”

Mr Meagher said it was the respon-sibility of Government to lead andmake choices which will tackle Ireland's budget deficit in a “fairand equitable way”.

“But to-date there appears to be asingle-minded approach that auster-ity is the solution,” he added. “Clearlythat approach is not working forthousands of people in Ireland.”

SVP’s key message for Budget 2014is that further cuts to the budgetsof Government departments whichimpact negatively on the servicesneeded by individuals, families and communities in Ireland are unacceptable.

The SVP Social Justice team metwith the Troika (three internationalorganisations funding and oversee-ing Ireland’s three-year bailout programme: the IMF, EuropeanCommission and European CentralBank) last February.

Jim Walsh, Press Liason Officer withSVP said the charity met themwhen they were over for one oftheir quarterly visits to Ireland tomonitor the country’s complianceand progress with the terms of thebailout.

“SVP met the Troika alongside another voluntary organisation, theEuropean Anti-Poverty Network(Ireland), and our objective was toconvey the experience at Confer-ence (local branch) level, where ourvolunteers visit and assist people inneed,” he said.

“The families and individuals beinghelped in various ways by SVP aretelling our volunteers of the struggles they face due to years ofrecession, austerity and reductionsin incomes – for families especially.

“We stressed upon the Troika representatives the need for an alternative policy approach by Government, with a roadmap for

John-Mark McCafferty, SVP Head Of Social Justice & Policy (Left) with Geoff Meagher, SVP National President

the kind of society that Irelandwants – one which is fairer andmore equal and which will not justtry to bring us back to the very unsustainable way we were beforethe crisis.

“Once again the Troika stressedthat, contrary to the impressionconsistently being given by Government, it is the Irish Government that decides themeasures (cuts / taxes) to be implemented, as opposed to theTroika dictating specific policies. Our policy and advocacy work with Government has intensified asa result.

Zachary Quinto 12You kept Instagram updated with an amazing video of you retracing your way toyour old work place, taking in the great community vibe of Galway City. It’s a good video, I really like Instagram. I have a certain level ofscepticism about social media. Ithink sometimes it is a totally unnecessary evil but I think of allthem, Instagram is my favourite because it’s just images or videos. Idon’t even really tweet anymore, justthe odd one to link it to my Instagram.

Have you loved all theroles/characters you have played?Yes, well it’s difficult for me some-times and I feel like Sylar, Heroesand American Horror Story were almost chosen for me. I don’t knowwhy I gravitated toward them orthey gravitated toward me but I justtry to understand the humanity ofall those characters with a sense ofcompassion. It’s hard to say that I really firmly believe that as an actorevery relationship with a character Iplay has to be rooted in love andobviously it’s really difficult to lovepeople like that.

There is an interestingquote from you, sayingthat you can relate toSpock because of his duality. Is it hard to actout a character of hisparticular kind?It is hard I guess as an actor, ourinstinct is to express but I have aprofound respect for the characterand his duality is a big part of that.I think it is just about diversity, Iplay that character and then I play

Welcome back to Ireland Zachary. It’s just great to be back, I lived here15 years ago in Galway so it reallyis great to be back.

So why Ireland and inparticular why Galway?Well I’m half Irish, my heritage ishalf Irish and half Italian. So Iwanted to go somewhere that Ihad a connection to but I didn’twant to learn a new language andI did a lot of research at the timeand in 1998 it was the fastest grow-ing city in western Europe actuallyand in terms of use it felt like a re-ally vital City in Ireland. I travelled

around a lot while I was here too. Iwent to Dublin, Limerick and Corkand saw the whole country butGalway is my favourite. I spent thewhole day when I got here roamingaround and trying to find the oldplaces I used to hang out.

Did you go and visit the old coffee shop you used to work in?I did. It was the first place I went to.Everything has changed, they nowhave computers. The owner toldme they just got them like last year. When I did it we literally had towear a fanny pack with my money

in it and give change and add it allup in our head for all these drunkpeople. We had to write the orderson a note pad and then tear it offand put it on top of the toasteroven in the kitchen and then theheat from the toaster oven wouldcurl the paper and then the orderswould fall behind the toaster andpeople would be like “where is myorder?”

Seems like you look backat that time in your lifewith fond memories?I do. I really do.

We recently caught up with Zachary Quinto, best known for playingSpock in the 2009 reboot Star Trek, and its 2013 sequel, Star Trek IntoDarkness during the Galway Film Fleadh

He revealed some interested insights into his time living here in Ireland and also revealed that Paramount have told the Star Trek cast that they're planning to shoot Star Trek 3 in 2014, and that J.J. still wants to direct!

other characters and do otherthings that allow me to exercise dif-ferent muscles so when I’m playingSpock that kind of restraint issomething that I embrace. Thething that is frustrating for mewhile I am doing Spock is we willdo a scene and in a movie this bigyou have a lot of time and freedomto really get in and explore, whereas on a television show youhave to turn out an episode everyeight days for the most part, sothere really just isn’t any time forexploration. You have about four orfive takes and you are onto the nextthing, whereas with something asbig as Star Trek you have sixmonths to shoot.

You had some reallyfunny moments in the movie. Was it enjoyable onset?Of course, the thing that gets frustrat-ing sometimes is we could be on thecoverage of Chris, and J.J would be inthere working with him take after takeafter take and it could sometimes beten takes later they get onto me andthere is only so much you can do. LikeI really tried to cultivate an inner lifethat transcends and that is translat-able to the audience but the reality isthere are only so many different waysI can raise my eyebrow. So I often feellike I wish I had another take but thenI ask myself why? But I love the char-acter for who he is.

Your Spock and Zoe Saldana’s Uhora translatereally well on screen. It’s hilariously strange.I think she finds it hot, what can Itell you? She’s hot blooded enough, that Zoe Saldana. She doesn’t needany more spice.

The other thing I love about your interpretation of Spock is the humour. Do you consciously think about the humour when you are playing the role ordoes it just come frombeing him? Both. I mean it is in the writing. Ithink J.J Abrams (director) is funnyin his own right, so I do think thatis part of it. It’s also somethingLeonard Nimoy (original Spock)and I talked a lot about actually. Ithink that’s one of his favourite aspects of the character; the humour. In this new movie whenKirk and Uhora are in the lift andthe door opens and I am there, andhe says to me “Are your ears burning?”. It’s just the logic of thatfor Spock, the irony of the sarcasmdoesn’t register with him straightaway and that is funny in its ownway. I think it’s just all part of thecharacter. Even towards the start ofthe movie when Spock is referredto as “pointy” and he replies with“Is that a derogatory reference tomy ears?”. All brilliant lines.

You and Chris Pine who plays Kirk have a great onscreen partnership. Do you get to catch up much?I was just thinking about him yesterday. I haven’t seen him in along time since I moved to NewYork, but yeah, he’s a great guy andwe are great friends. I think he issuper talented and intelligent andwe get on really well, which is whyit works so well on screen. You can’tmanufacture that kind of thing andit would totally suck if we didn’t getalong, but it’s not just Chris. I mean, I

15have such adeep affinityfor the entirecast, in par-ticular Zoe.I’ve knownherfor 13 years. We met rightafter I gradu-ated college. The whole lot of usjust get on really well andthe thing that I realised whendoing this movie is these arepeople that will be in eachother’s lives forever. Wehave at least one moremovie left together andthat will probably hap-pen sometime nextyear. Well the shooting, that’s the sense I get, although there hasn’tbeen any official word on it yet.

Margin Callwas the first feature that you produced. You must've felt really happy with theAcademy Award nomination, and it was loved critically. How did your production companyand the relationshipwith J.C Chandor start out?Well we had been looking for ourfirst feature to produce for a whileand my business partner, who Ihave known since I was 15, knewa guy who knew J.C Chandor(Writer/Director). So it was a mutual acquaintance. My businesspartner rang me and said youneed to come meet this guy andI did. He was super cool. I reallyliked him. He was really intelligentand articulate and laid back and

InTallaghtMaster40_Layout 1 07/08/2013 17:26 Page 15

Page 16: InTallaght EDITION 40

he told us about the project before we read it. We hadn’t readthe script yet and it sounded likethe kind of movie we wanted tomake. So we read the script and wedecided this is it. This is the movie, and then we made it within a yearand a half of that time, which ispretty remarkable in terms of howlong it takes to get independentfilms made generally.

It’s actually quite different from the stuff you started out with or might be famous for.You think? Well there are certainlyno lasers or pointy ears or greenscreens.

How do you find wearingyour producers hat versus the acting, obviously it’s a whole different ball game?I love it. I mean, it’s really great. It’schallenging in different ways butI’m always at my best when I’mbusy. I’m always at my best whenI’m juggling more than one thing.I’m never ever best when I’m wait-ing for people to tell me it’s ok todo something, it’s not a good lookon me. So I really value the fact thatit provides me with an opportunityto always be doing something andalways be cultivating stories andnurturing talent. I was in MarginCall but it is the only movie of thefour movies we have done so farthat I was in. I haven’t been in anyof the others.

Do you enjoy being in charge?Yeah you just have to get stuff doneand keep going till it happens, es-

16pecially with independent filming. My production company has no af-filiation with a studio on purposenow. It wasn’t always on purpose, but now it is on purpose. For thefirst few years I was sort of wonder-ing why we didn’t have an over-head deal, like, why aren’t wegetting money? What is going on?

But it just didn’t happen for what-ever reason and then of courseafter Margin Call we could have adeal wherever we wanted but nowwe don’t want it, so it’s actuallygreat. It does require us to forgeour own path but as a result wehave so much more control andpower and freedom. We had noclue what we were doing when westarted this company so we havefound our way. Just keep going forward until you end up whereyou need to be.

What is coming up next?We are about to start on J.C Chan-dor’s third movie in the fall in NewYork which I may or may not be inwe will just have to see.

Star Trek Into Darkness has beenconfirmed for release in the US onDVD and Blueray September 102013, and we'd imagine that theIrish release will fall in line withthat. The film will be available digitally a little earlier. Its digitalrelease is earmarked for August20.

You can also watch Zachary’s excellent performance in MarginCall which is available to down-load on iTunes now.

Readers may remember Jennifer Paige from her 1998 smash hit Crush, which reached number one all over the world.

Since then she has released a number of critically acclaimed albums and singles and carved out a verysuccessful career for herself on the other side of the Atlantic. Her new project sees her team up withCoury Palermo. The duo releases their debut album GO this month under the name Paige & Palermo.InTallaght Magazine caught up with her to find out more about the singer from Atlanta, Georgia.

What was life like when very young singing in bars, cafes and restaurants? It was a great introduction to themusic scene. By the time I got myfirst record deal, I had already performed in every possible scenario - big & small venues, hugecrowds, no crowds… that gave methe experience I needed to handlethe "overnight" burst onto theworldwide stage.

How did the song Crushcome about? Were yousurprised it became sucha hit?I was dating a guy at the time whowas talking about marriage after acouple of dates. It freaked me out andI shared my thoughts with my producer. It became a song - andnow that guy no longer speaks to me.

How do you go aboutwriting songs? Do you write lyrics ormusic first? Are you good at collaborating?I love to collaborate. I generallycome up with melodies and lyricsfirst. I like to work with producerswho are musically strong so I canhave the freedom to create whatever I want. When I'm focusedon chords and arrangements, itslows me down creatively. I like tojust see what falls out when I'm notthinking too much about it. Thoseare usually my best songs.

What has it been liketouring around the world especially in Europe; countries likeGermany and Spain?

And, Spain is totally my speed.Good food, good people, goodmusic…what's not to like? I loveseeing the different places in theworld. I've been so blessed to seethe world with my own two eyes -traveling has been my favoritething about my career, so far.

Tell us about your new duo act Paige &Palmero? How did youmeet Coury Palermo? How well do you worktogether?Paige & Palermo came about aftera songwriting session with Coury. I went out of town and asked Couryto add backgrounds to the song wehad written for my upcomingrecord. It sounded so good, we decided to write more songs, andthat first song we wrote togetherbecame a P&P song. It's called Losing You and it's on our currentEP, Stay, which was released onJune 4. The project has been alabour of love and Coury has become a great friend during thecreative process. He's awesome!

How does Stay compareto your solo work? The sound stays true to my previ-ous work and to Coury's, as well. When we come together, it createssomewhat of a singer/songwriterinfused pop.

19Would you ever go backto being a solo artist or do you prefer beingwith Palmero?Paige & Palermo is a project in addition to my solo work. My mostrecent release was a holiday recordin December of last year, and I amcurrently working on new material.

I believe in the P&P record and Ifeel like it allows me to express adifferent side of myself creatively. It's been a lot of fun. I hope theworld will love and embrace thenew EP.

As a sound engineer I’m neck deepin the music scene here and thereis such a vast amount of talent herefor such a small city. There’s suchdiversity. The only problem is thecountry is just too small to supportan industry.

There are 10 million people livingin London, there’s only 5 million inthis whole country; we’re such asmall pool.

There’s snobbery in this countrythough that bands almost have togo to the UK first and get “verified”by the UK listeners before peoplein their own country think they’regood. I was chatting to an EnglishPR guy about this recently and hehas noticed this as well, he wasshocked by it.

What are your targets career wise? I have absolutely no interest inbeing a one hit wonder, thatwouldn’t be something I would aimfor at all! I would like to have a career like someone like Josh Ritter, who is someone I admire verymuch. Being able to travel arounddoing gigs and festivals and makea living like that.

You hear some of the stuff on theradio nowadays and you think“How the hell did that get on!” I suppose a lot of listenershipnowadays, we’re told what to listento, we don’t really have a choice.

Unless you’re willing to go out andsupport independent bands andmusicians then you wont have achoice. I understand not everyoneis that interested enough to do thatthough, which is fair enough.Nowadays we’ve probably got toomuch choice really.

InTallaght Magazine met up with him to chat about his hopes forhis career, the Irish music scene and the album.

For our readers whohaven’t heard you oryour music before howwould you describe your style?I’m a singer-songwriter/folk musician. I’ve been told I’m a bit ofa country cross over artist, I don’tpersonally see that myself!

Nothing against country music, the real stuff is great, not like thatcountry and Irish sh*te! It’s a woefulinterpretation of the genre! Why

would anyone listen to this whenthere already is proper AmericanCountry and Western?

Tell us about your newalbum Man On Fire. It’s my first album and it has songswhich could be described as general singer-songwriter stuff, songs about personal experiencesand relationships.I wrote the wholealbum myself and it was recordedover two years, pretty much all off

my own back. I recorded it in Resolution Studios; I would go infor a whole day once a month.

Then I’d save up for the next session, so it was a long aul twoyears but it was a great way ofdoing it because it was a hugelearning experience for me. I amalso a sound engineer so I was ableto do all that side of it myself. Whiledoing it I wrote another few songsthat got onto the album.

How long have you beenmaking music?I started writing pretty much whenI picked up a guitar when I was 14.I remember having difficultly look-ing for inspiration and it was mymother who told me to write aboutwhat I know and I kind of just stuckwith that really, it was great advice.

Who are your influences?A lot of the Irish singer-songwriters.Damien Rice, Luka Bloom, MarkGeary, Josh Ritter and of course allthe classics. You can’t call yourselfa songwriter if you don’t listen toBob Dylan!

What are your thoughtson the Irish music sceneat the moment? It’s a bit of a controversial subjectwith me to be honest, the scene itself I’d consider there’s two sidesto that coin.

There’s the scene and the industry. The scene is as big as it’s ever beenand as diverse and as talented asit’s ever been. There’s a vast amountof talent from every type of genrefrom singer-songwriters to soul andpunk, there’s a massive punk scene.

Johnny Depp is synonymous with his

role as Captain JackSparrow in The Pirates of The Caribbean.

So it’s not surprising that the filmmaking team behind thatblockbuster franchise have cast himagain.Disney/Jerry BruckheimerFilms bring you The Lone Ranger, athrilling adventure infused with action and humor, in which thefamed masked hero is brought tolife through new eyes.

The movie itself is based on NativeAmerican spirit warrior Tonto, played by the iconic Johnny Depp, who recounts the untold tales thattransformed John Reid, a man ofthe law, into a legend of justice. Thefilm takes the audience on a run-away train of epic surprises and hu-morous friction as the two unlikely heroes must learn to worktogether and fight against greedand corruption.

Director Gore Verbinski weaves arousing, captivating tale that incorporates back stories for boththe Ranger and Tonto, explaininghow each came with haunting personal motives to the quest thatultimately unites them against amonstrous outlaw, with a taste forblood and a greedy expansionistrailroad baron.

The four minute long trailer givesus a sneak peek at what could beone of the movies of the year. Butwill it live up to the hype? Reviewshave been mixed so far, but thereseems to be plenty of humouralong with a number of violentscenes.

Pain and Gain is a truestory based on a series ofPete Collins articles, origi-nally published in theMiami New Times.

The articles were about the SunGym gang who have a love forsteroids, strippers, and quick cash.

In the mid-1990's these dim-bulbFlorida bodybuilders, led by gymmanager Danny Lugo played byMark Wahlberg, came up with arare idea. Kidnap and extort a richclient, Victor Kershaw. To help,Danny brings in two of his friends, personal trainer Adrian and ex-conPaul played by Dwayne Johnson,an alcoholic recovering with thehelp of Jesus.

From viewing the trailer alone Ilooked forward to the movie butmy main concern, and the possibledownfall of the whole film, wouldbe how director Michael Bay has

made the movie light hearted and humorous when really in reality itwas a scary, real-life situation wherethe victim was seriously tortured.

That’s not to say that Bay’s riskwon’t pay off and come across wellon the big screen, in fact I reallyhope it does.

I do look forward to seeing come-dian/actress Rebel Wilson and EdHarris co-starring, I’m sure there'llbe plenty of belly laughs.

Visually speaking, Pain & Gainshares a lot in common with BadBoys II, Michael Bay’s other Miamibased action/comedy film. Thetrailer seems to indicate that Bay istrying out some new techniques aswell, which are featured allthroughout the trailer, this is something critics in America havealready praised the director for asit debuted in cinemas there.

Cinema 32

The minute a movie director adds the tagline“based on a true story” to a horror they are always going to draw in a decent audience.

This is exactly what James Wan hadhoped to achieve with his newmovie The Conjuring. From thetrailer alone I had expected a typi-cal rewrite of the original Americanhorror story, The Amityville Horrorand I wasn’t too far off the mark ei-ther. Yet it’s not all bad.

The film tells the story of Ed andLoraine Warren who are real lifeparanormal investigators. They haveexperienced many disturbing sightsin their time but no other investiga-tion stands out to them quite as muchas the one the film surrounds.

In 1971, Carolyn and Roger Perronmove into a dilapidated, old farm-house in Harrisville, Rhode Island, with their five daughters. Almost

immediately they start to experi-ence strange and unexplainableevents which prompt them to recruit the Warrens who set aboutuncovering the mysteries of thehouse and chasing away the ghosts.

During the process of researchingthe house's history, Ed and Lorrainefind out that the house belonged toan accused witch, Bathsheba. WhenBathsheba's husband caught hersacrificing their week old infant infront of the fireplace, she climbedto the top of a tree on the property, and cursed all those who wouldtake her land.

This film will have your heart racingfrom start to finish. There are dis-tant and close up knocking soundsand a pretty disturbing game ofhide and seek which will haveeveryone jumping out of their seats.

Overall director James Wan hasdone well to provide us with a finished product that is fast pacedand memorable, although some of

the scenes brought nothing new to the table and at times I felt themovie was similar to recent horrorsfor example the scene with the exorcism.

Surprisingly enough the movie ispractically bloodless, and dependsinstead on constantly moving cameras and quick and horrific vi-suals. It’s certainly one to see if youare into horror but I warn you, Islept with the light on the night Isaw it, so be prepared!

MusicBACKSTREETBOYSIn A World Like ThisBy Kathleen O’Connor

MORRISSEY &MARSHALLI’ve Got A PlanBy Padraig Conlon

36

It’s hard to believe it’s been 20years since the Backstreet Boysfirst crooned their way into prepubescent hearts in 1993.

To celebrate this pretty impressive mile-stone, they’ve just released their eighthstudio album, In A World Like This. Tomake matters even more exciting, Kevin isback! That’s right, this will be the firstalbum since 2006 to feature the full crew.Backstreet’s back, but don’t expect to hearthe old stuff you’re used to from the boys.

They’ve taken a slightly different approachto this album, most likely to appeal to the younger crowd of today. At times itsucceeds and other times it falls short.

The album starts off with a power ballad,Breathe, reminiscing about a relationshipafter a breakup. The song starts out witha quiet piano melody accompanied bydramatic strings and then is interruptedby a strong bass line igniting a steadygroove for the rest of the song. I thoughtit was fitting that the first person to singon the album is Kevin. It’s a nice start thateases you into the rest of the album.

The title track, In A World Like This, isabout finding love when it’s needed mostand staying together no matter the obstacle. This song is dominated by

acoustic guitar and a heavy drum beat that createsa fun, upbeat pop song that you can’t resist bop-ping your head along to.

At times, this album seems almost formulaic. I would say that the weakest song on the album isLove Somebody because it makes them soundmore like teenage boys than grown men.

Some of my favourite tracks on this album, surprisingly, were some of the acoustic tracks.Madeleine, Trust Me, and Try, which are probablysome of the strongest songs on the album, mainlybecause they steer away from a stereotypical boyband sound. A heavy acoustic guitar presence withlight drumbeats gave these songs a laid back, soulful element. They come across as a sort ofcombination between Jason Mraz and James Morrison, and if you didn’t know who was singing, you probably wouldn’t know it was a boy band.

I love old school Backstreet Boys, but it was interesting hearing them experiment with somedifferent styles. It’s a definite step away from whatwe’re used to hearing from them, and I thinksometimes it works and other times it just soundsway too forced. They definitely have some fun andcatchy songs on the album, but I look forward tohow they’ll improve their sound in the future.

Darren Morrissey and Greg Marshall, collectivelyknown as Morrissey & Marshall, are two lads fromTallaght set to release their debut single, I’ve Gota Plan later this month. It is a wonderfully upbeatsong that seems absolutely right for the currenttimes with its message of positivity and the importance of making people laugh. The trackopens with Morrissey singing how he’s “got aplan” to make things better, he “needs a hand tomake it happen” but he’s fairly sure “change willfollow suit.”

Opening with acoustic guitar, the track builds upinto a powerful melodic up-tempo chorus whereboth lads reveal the plan, singing about “howeasy it is to laugh, make everyone laugh.” Morrissey & Marshall’s sound evokes some of theclassic duos of the sixties and seventies and theycite The Everly Brothers, Simon & Garfunkel, TheBeatles and The Kinks as influences.

This is a great single that should make an impression on the charts, a feel good summersong bristling with happiness, seamlessly blending rock and roll with folk. Tallaght seemsto be brimming with musical talent at the moment and Morrissey and Marshall sound likethey’re ready to take on the world.

The new Tile app is the world’slargest lost and found. It’s a cloudbased platform that helps you lo-cate anything, anywhere, as long asyou’ve attached a tile to the pos-session you don’t want to lose.

An audible alert can also be set tolet you search by sound. What setsTile up from the other accessoriesthat alert you where your keys are;the device is also built with GPS lo-cations and uses crowd sourcing ifyour item gets stolen. Thus creatingthe largest lost and found ever.

For instance if you leave your walletat a restaurant, instead of searchingyour home, trouser pockets, couchand wash basket, you can mark itas lost in the Tile app.

This puts all other Tile app users onalert. And once a Tile user gets inrange of your personal Tile, you arediscreetly alerted the GPS location.Finding everything just got a wholelot easier.

When a group of twelve terror-ists calling themselves "The Engineers"initiate a deadly countdown of escalating attacks on United Statesassets called "The Blacklist", Fisherand his team are assigned to huntthem down and stop the Blacklistcountdown before it reaches zero.Blacklist again stars Sam Fisher asthe spymaster and commander ofthe newly instated Fourth Echelon. The game also sees the return ofFisher's old ally, Anna 'Grim' Gríms-dóttir, along with new characterssuch as Isaac Briggs and Charlie

Cole. Victor Coste and Andriy Kobinreprise their roles from Conviction. In November 2010, Jade Raymondfrom Ubisoft Toronto announcedthat the studio was developing anew Splinter Cell game. During theMicrosoft's press conference at E32012, Splinter Cell: Blacklist was officially revealed; the talk high-lighted new features for the seriesincluding Kinect integration.

It was also announced that seriesveteran Michael Ironside would notreprise his role as the voice of SamFisher, with this part filled insteadby actor Eric Johnson, who will alsobe performing motion capture duties. In a "Blacklist" developer diaries Ironside stated that hewould not return to voice the character, but instead pass thetorch to another actor.

Ubisoft executives said that thechange was made to take advantageof new performance capture technology to create a richer experience, with Ironside assistingJohnson in the role. Elias Toufexis, voice and performance captureactor for Andriy Kobin in SplinterCell: Conviction, announced on hisTwitter account that he will reprise

the role in the game. Splinter CellBlacklist will hit the shelves on the23rd of August.

Blacklist introduces a new game-play mechanic called Killing in Motion, allowing the player tohighlight targets and take them outin quick succession while on therun. The game is set in a third-person perspective so the protagonist and the objects aroundhim are visible. There will also bevoice integration with Xbox 360'sKinect peripheral, which will allowplayers to say things to distract enemies and then attack. Theplayer can also use the Kinect sensor to control the protagonistwith their body instead of the Xbox360 controller. In the Wii U version, the Gamepad controller's touch-screen acts as an interface to accessgadgets and other features from

the protagonist's arm-mountedcomputer, or OPSAT. It also incor-porates the screen and motioncontrols to highlight enemiesthrough thermal vision when usingthe Killing in Motion mechanic.

The Ford Fiesta is one of the best selling cars in Ireland.

So when the manufacturers gotdown to designing the new modelit is clear their main focus was onthe performance of the car as opposed to a complete redesign. The new model has just received asimple nip and a tuck.

From first glance it’s clear to all thatthe car is still very much like the olddesign with a few new features. Theface of the car has received themajor work most notably with thegrille which looks like it has beenlifted straight from an Aston Martin.

The new feature sits in well with the compact design. The car now comes in a range of 11 striking colours.

Inside the changes to the new Fiesta are less dramatic but they dohelp keep the car looking fresh. Thenew shiny black trim extends downfrom the radio to the gear stick. Allthe door handles have also beencompletely redesigned to and givethe interior a far sportier look.

There is plenty of storage space inside. Unfortunately practicalityisn’t as great further back. The sloping roofline means if you havetall passengers they may find theback seat a bit of a squeeze withhead room a little bit tight. The bootspace isn’t too big either but dopeople buying one of these cars really expect a fantastic sized boot?

The car also comes with some newtechnology which is available forthe first time. For example you canget it with the Sony stereo whichincludes DAB digital radio andFord’s sync system, which lets youcontrol lots of the cars featuresusing voice commands .

The drive itself is exactly what youwould expect from any of Ford’srange and it can only be describedas excellent. The biggest newsabout the Fiesta is the introductionof a new three-cylinder 1.0-litreEcoboost petrol engine.

The car steering is nice and light. You also have great visibility on theroad and the small dimensionsmean it is easy to navigate whileout and about.

The new Ford Fiesta has a startingprice of €15,550. So pop online to www.ford.ie to find your closest dealership and take one fora test drive.

Although the compact nature ofthis car may not be everyone’s cupof tea, but the way this car drivesmakes it the best small car currentlyon the market.

Writers’ CornerSUMMER TIMEBy Declan White

You can tell it's summer:The gusty breezes are carryingsweet fragrances right past our noses,As all the plants wave, sing, and dancein their long awaited floral party,Throwing their pollen to each other far and wide, like so much confetti at a wedding,Or young new scholars with their mortarboards,Cast in feckless unison high above their heads.

A great hurrah, rippling right across landscapes,As thoroughly and deeply as a shock wave,Of 'long live the season',For it's nature's coronation.

The wind, now, it doesn't blow desolately. It is a breathless messenger, carrying its bright backlog, long overdue,Leaving a trail and scattering everywhere.

Bookworm1THE DOLL’SHOUSEBy Louise Phillips

I’ve been looking forward to readingthis book for a good while.

Louise Phillps first came to our attention lastyear when we featured an interview with her inthe magazine. When her debut novel was re-leased, we were one of the first to get a copyand the same can be said for this one. We lovesupporting local talent and that definitely de-scribes this author from Bohernabreena.

If you’re a long time reader of my column youmay remember that I really enjoyed Red Rib-bons, Phillips’s debut. Her second book, TheDoll’s House, welcomes back the two majorplayers of the first book.

The book starts with a snippet of a memory, orpossibly a fantasy based on memory. This is indicitive of the way the main character Clodaghrecalls past events throughout the novel. Thisfantastical approach adds an extra layer of intrigue to the slow revealing of the complexplot. Clodagh has gaps in her memory which

she thinks may have caused her current prob-lems; mental instability and alcoholism.

She believes something from her childhood isbeing blocked out by her conscious memoryand in order to get better, she needs to get tothe bottom of her strained relationship with herrecently deceased mother.

Clodagh resorts to visiting a hypnotherapistwho unleashes disturbing childhood memoriesof her father’s death thirty-five years ago. AsClodagh delves deeper into her subconscious, memories of another tragedy come to light -the death of her baby sister.

Meanwhile criminal psychologist Dr Kate Pearson is called in to help in the investigationof a murder after a body is found in a Dublincanal. When Kate digs beneath the surface ofthe killing, she discovers a sinister connectionto the Hamilton family. What terrible events took place in the Hamilton house all those yearsago? And what connect them to the recentmurder? Time is running out for Clodagh andKate. And the killer has already chosen his next victim...

If you’ve read Red Ribbons, you’ll already be familiar with Kate. She’s a very sympatheticcharacter who I felt seemed realistic in the wayshe reacts to situations and in particular her interactions with DI O’Connor.

Again, like Red Ribbons, the book is set inDublin, though this time it’s more focused onthe Harcourt Street Police Station, Ranelagh,Sandymount and Ring’s End. I always like a bitof local flavour and being able to picture the locations of a book from real life. The vocabu-lary is also unmistakably Irish, but not in a tweeway. Certain turns of phrase cement the storyfirmly in Dublin.

The structure of the book, each chapter headedeither by the location or Clodagh’s name, flits between the characters and keeps the momentum going right until the end. I reallyenjoyed this novel. It builds nicely on the baseof Red Ribbons and I’m already looking forwardto her next outing!

About The AuthorLouise Phillips is bestselling crime author of thepsychological crime thriller, Red Ribbons,, short-listed for Best Irish Crime Novel of the Year 2012.

Her work has been published as part of many anthologies, including County Lines from New Island, and various literary journals.

In 2009, she won the Jonathan Swift Awardfor her short story Last Kiss, and in 2011 she wasa winner in the Irish Writers’ Centre Lonely Voice platform.

She has also been short-listed for the Molly KeaneMemorial Award, Bridport UK, and long-listedtwice for the RTÉ Guide/Penguin Short StoryCompetition. In 2012, she was awarded an ArtsBursary for Literature from South Dublin CountyCouncil.

Born in Dublin, Louise Phillips returned to writingin 2006, after raising her family. She lives in Bohernabreena, where some parts of her debutnovel were set. InTallaght magazine first interviewed Louise last year before Red Ribbonswas released.

With all the recent hot weather, one particularthing is very important - SPF. This stands for sunprotection factor. There are a huge number ofpeople in this country with fair skin, freckles andmoles, who go red and burn very easily in thesun. So SPF is vital, not only to avoid the dis-comfort of sunburn, but for the health of yourskin. As shocking as it is, skin cancer is the mostcommon cancer in Ireland.

The melanin in our skin - or pigment - is ourskin’s natural sun protection. When your skin isexposed to strong sunlight it produces pigmentto protect itself. That is why people with oliveand darker skin tones are less likely to burn andrisk skin damage - because their skin has moremelanin, and can naturally protect itself. Peoplewith fairer skin tones don't produce the sameamount of melanin, so their skin is more proneto burning and dark patches of skin or freckles- which in many cases are areas of skin whichhave been fighting to protect itself!

Broad Spectrum UV ProtectionBut what about SPF all year round? We don'tneed it most part of the year because we are cov-ered up and there is very little sunshine, but ourfaces are exposed to UV rays every single day.

The next time you are purchasing SPF make sureit has broad spectrum protection, meaning it protects against both UVA & UVB rays.

UVA rays are the same intensity all day, and allyear long. Weather doesn't effect UVA, so therewill be the same amount of exposure throughwind, rain and snow as there would be on a hotsummer’s day. They can penetrate clouds andglass. UVA rays are also responsible for break-ing down collagen and elastin fibres - so play amajor part in skin aging.

SPF should become an important step everymorning as part of your skin care regime. Somefoundations contain them but they can causeflash back in photos giving your face a very whiteappearance, so people can apply SPF over theirmoisturiser and underneath their make-up.

A critical factor with any sun protection is people’s willingness to apply the product on adaily basis. If you are very active and outdoorsa lot, it is crucial, and will prevent the early onsetof wrinkles and sagging skin. So next time you are applying your SPF in the morning, remember it is the best anti aging product youwill ever use.

A warning - these tasty little nibbles are addictive! Pecans are good to begin with, buttoss them in a hot melty mess of honey andspice and suddenly there's no such thing asjust a few. Have them in a salad, dip them inyogurt, or just pile these sticky candied nutsin a stack and enjoy them as they are.

I think snacks should always be easy to prepare and that holds true here. This snackstarts with a mixture of honey, vanilla andspices heated on the stove until ooey gooey, then tossed with the nuts and baked quickly in a hot oven. So quick and a reallyspecial treat.

Propagation by cutting is one ofthe most efficient techniques ofreproducing a plant that is anexact genetic copy of its parent.

This method preserves unique and specialplants that have different or patchy results whengrown from seed. Cuttings are usually taken frommid-spring through mid-autumn but, with agreenhouse heated propagator or heat mat theycan be rooted a lot earlier. If you have a parentplant that is getting a bit old or showing signs ofdistress and you are a bit worried it might die, thenit might be worth taking a few cuttings especiallyif it means a lot to you or is a rare species. The re-sulting plant will be identical to the parent plant.

Taking cuttings from shrubs is an easy way youcan increase your stock of many popular gardenplants at no cost, including hydrangeas, philadelphus, lavender and forsythia.

One of the most popular types of cuttings is atip cutting - the tip of the bud and a length ofstem containing 2 or 3 nodes. Don't take toolarge a cutting; the growing tip is going to rootmuch faster than hardened wood. Cuttingsshould be 5 to 10cm (2 to 4in) long.

Use a clean pair of secateurs or a pruning knifeand choose healthy, pest-free and non-floweringshoots of new growth. Cut from the parent plantand put inside a plastic bag - add a few drops ofwater and shake to help prevent the plant materialdrooping while you're going round the garden tak-ing your cuttings and make sure that you avoidcrushing the plant tissue. Rooting hormones canencourage rooting of difficult plants and increasethe number of roots on others.

Prepare by making a straight cut beneath a pair ofleaves and then remove several sets of lowerleaves that would rot in the soil if left behind. Keeponly one or two pairs of leaves at the tip. Most cut-tings root better if the cut end is dipped in hor-mone rooting liquid or powder.

Use a free-draining medium such as lime-free coarsesand, or sand mixed with sterile Materiel (a mix of 50per cent cuttings compost and 50 per cent horticul-tural grit), level and firm. It should be moisture-retentive and free of disease, weeds and insects.

Retain humidity - cuttings have no roots to takeup water, but they lose it through their leaves. Takeseveral cuttings and put in a plant pot, cover thepot with a clear plastic bag, and old in place with

an elastic band, to stop the cuttings from drying out until they can support themselves. You may occasionally have to provide ventilation by uncovering them for an hour ortwo hours a day.

Check by looking for roots growing throughthe holes at the base of the pot, or by gentlytugging at the plants after three weeks, ifthere’s resistance, they may have rooted.Roots normally appear in 7 to 10 days, andyour cutting is ready to transplant in 7 to 21days, with a healthy, well-developed root sys-tem. When used indoors, results are betterwhen the cuttings daily receive 16-18 hoursof artificial light.

Check plants often - remove any dead cuttingsor fallen leaves.Don't over-water, but check formoisture more often if using heat. They willdry out faster. Keep your cuttings in a warm, bright spot, out of direct sunlight.

Harden off once roots appear, by gradually in-troducing the newly formed plants to outsideweather conditions. When plants are about15cm (6in) tall pinch out the tips to encouragenew branches to grow.

We are all familiar with the old say-ing “An apple a day keeps the doctoraway” but is it true and if so, why?

Well apples may not rank highest on the listwhen it comes to antioxidants but many impor-tant fruits and vegetable do. However since oursociety has changed so much over the years werarely eat these essential nutrients relying toomuch on processed foods instead.

One of the main reasons foods are processedis to extend shelf life of a product which is nodoubt essential to the retailer and consumer.Processing also kills harmful bacteria and othermicro-organisms too but these procedures alsodestroy all the vital nutrients and vitamins thatare essential to the body. On average, process-ing can remove up to 80% of nutrients of aproduct which means that the body is not gettingenough nutrients to perform its daily functionsnever mind to ward off diseases of infections.

Without antioxidants the body cannot protectitself against the stresses and strains of every-day life which often result in a lower immunesystem thus we gets colds and flus more easilythan we should.

The role of antioxidants in the body is to fightoff free radicals. Free radicals are groups ofatoms or molecules that have become imbal-anced due to impaired electrons and becauseof this they are unstable and highly reactiveconstantly causing a chain of reactions in thebody in an effort to try to pair themselves correctly. Free radicals not only cause cell damage but they are also known to cause and accelerate cancers, cardiovascular disease andother age-relating diseases like Alzheimer’s.

Smoking and air pollution are known as external toxins and are a huge and dangeroussource of free radicals. The water we drink andthe pesticides used to grow our foods all contain free radicals and drinking excessiveamounts of alcohol triggers and promotes freeradical production within the body.

Antioxidants work to stop the chain of reactionsof free radical production in the body by pairingelectrons and balancing the molecules thusstopping the reaction before or after it hasstarted and expelling free radicals out of theblood stream. While antioxidants have not beenproven to treat conditions they have beenproven beneficial in the prevention of many de-

generative and age-related diseases. Natureprovides us with thousands of antioxidants in a wide variety of fruits and vegetables as wellas whole grains, nuts and legumes to help prevent these diseases.

When your body needs to put up its best defence, antioxidants are crucial to one’s health. For example, carrots contain beta carotenewhich is essential for maintaining healthy eyesand lycopene which is found in tomatoes isknown to benefit prostrate health. Cocoa whichis found in dark chocolate is not only good foryour heart but it also promotes your mood andcognitive functions. Proanthocyanidins found incranberries and apples can also aid the maintenance of the urinary tract.

In so far as the saying goes “An apple a daykeeps the doctor away” it may very well be trueindeed. The recommendation is that you eat atleast five portions plus, of fruit and vegetablesper day incorporating all the colours of the rain-bow for the best sources of antioxidants. Thiswill not only increase your immune system butwill also help reduce the signs of aging and agerelated diseases and therefore is essential foroptimal health and your overall wellbeing.

Dubs on Right Track

Dublin sealed their fourth consecutive All Ireland football semi final when they dispatched Cork in Croke Park on August 3to book a semi final berth against the oldenemy Kerry on September 1 making it another long summer for the Dubs.

The final Score was Dublin 1-16 to 0-14 butit could have been a lot more as the Dubssquandered numerous goal chances early onwhen points could have been taken to establish a lead. Goalkeeper Cluxton with 0-06 was top scorer in a game, which sawBernerd Brogan only register a solitary free, and the only goal coming from the speedyJack McCaffery

Kerry qualified for the semis by dispatchingCavan in a game where they dominated forlarge periods before some sloppy play allowing Cavan to come close and givinghope to the Dubs who must fancy theirchances of beating the Kingdom in a repeatof the classic final of 2011.

On the other side of the draw Tyrone beatMonaghan in a game that provoked a lot ofdebate in the media due to the cynical tacticsof the Tyrone men and Sean Cavanagh inparticular. They will face Mayo team whohave their tails up after they thoroughly dismantled the reigning All Ireland champi-ons in an astonishing game which saw themscore 4 – 17 past the hapless champions.

Could you tell our readers how the move to Iran come about?I had just finished the season withDerry (November 2011). I don’tknow why but I get some mad offers from agents who get in touchwith me through Facebook oremail, or somehow get my phonenumber. People say it’s probablybecause I play for the Libya nationalteam, I don’t know.

One of these agents asked mewould I be interested in going toBrunei for a week in November. I kind of laughed off the suggestionbut he said George O’Callaghanwas over there playing, so I got intouch with him and he said to goover and check it out.

I went over, didn’t like it and camehome. The same agent, from Croatia, got back in touch about

two weeks later in December andsaid would I be interested in goingto Iran. I laughed off the idea andsaid “I don’t think so!”.

I headed off to play in the Pan ArabGames for Libya, I was away for fewweeks and when I got back on 19thDecember the agent asked meagain about Iran. He told me he wasvery serious but I still wasn’t sure sohe sent me through the offer.

What was the offer like?Financially it was a great offer, itwas for five months. The invitationsaid: “Dear Eamon Zayed, we’d liketo invite you to come and play forour team on a short term basis because of your good perform-ances this year in the Irish League.”

They’d never seen me play; some-one had given them my stats. So I

flew over just before Christmas, agreed terms, signed and then camehome and enjoyed Christmas here.

What happened next?I flew over in January. When I arrived in Iran they’d got a newmanager and the new guy hadn’ta clue who I was. His first questionwas “Who are you?” I told him “Myname is Eamon and I’m here toplay.” Then he asks me what posi-tion I play! I’m thinking this is a bitstrange so I tell him I’m a striker.

The Iranian agent then takes outhis iPhone and starts showing himan eight minute clip of me playingfor Drogheda United. After about aminute and a half the managergoes “Ok well we’ll have a look atya? As you know I didn’t sign you,the president did, so I don’t knowanything about you.”

In this the second part of our interview with new Hoops striker EamonZayed he tells us all about his time playing in Iran, from the highs of scoring a hat trick in the Tehran derby to the frustrations of not being paid.

InRovers57This must have been the last thing you wanted to hear?! Yeah, absolutely! I’m just standingthere thinking “What the f*** haveI gotten myself into?” I trained for acouple of weeks but I wasn’t doinggreat in training to be honest.

How did your new teammates treat youafter you arrived? They weren’t very friendly. It’s completely different when you area new player in a foreign environ-ment; they’re not that friendly toyou. I was a new comer; a foreignerthere to try and take their place sothere was quite a bit of jealousy.Out on the streets everyone waslovely, they all want to talk to you, they were very friendly.

It must have been lonely for you?Extremely lonely yeah, but theagent just kept saying to stick withit, that I’d get my chance. The teamplayed a lot of games in Januaryand I wasn’t involved in any ofthem. I was thinking “what the f***am I doing here?” At the end of thatmonth the manager said to thePresident “I’m not going to use thisplayer,” but the President told himhe’d paid decent money for him, atleast give him a chance.”

By the end of the month the teamweren’t doing great so I finally gota place on the bench and came onto make my debut. I felt I did alright. The next game up was theTehran derby against Esteghlal.Over there they live and die by it. Ididn’t fully appreciate it beforehandbecause I didn’t even speak thelanguage.

Tell us about how yournight unfolded?I was named as sub again. It wasthe coldest night I have ever expe-rienced, I was absolutely freezingon the bench. The lights in the stadium went out at half time so Iwas sitting in the dark in the dress-ing room drinking my tea when themanger told me to go out andwarm up.

It was quite a surreal experienceout on the pitch warming up in thedark in front of 80,000 people. All Icould see of the crowd were theglow off cigarettes and phones!

Just after the 60th minute I got on,at this stage we were now 2-0down. On 78 minutes I score. On the 80th I get a second todraw us level.

Then in the 91st minute Iget my 3rd goal whichturns out to be the winner. It was sheer pandemo-nium in the stadium, itwas unbelievable seeing allthose people celebrating.

Did you teammates behavior towards you change?Yeah, they were chuffed, suddenlythey all spoke English! I went backto my hotel that night and met myagent. He had tears in his eyes, hetold me he was so happy that I’dproved everyone wrong. After thatmatch I could relax and enjoy it andthe rest of my time with the clubwas great.

After your contract ended you decided to stay in Iran?

Yes I moved to another club fromdown south, Aluminium Hormozgan, but this was a terrible experience.

Iran is going through a financial crisis and clubsare having problemspaying footballers. When it came to theend of the season, Iwas due a sum ofmoney and I had to negotiate it.

The contracts mean nothing in Iran.If you get 60-70% of your contract, that is great. They make up their

own rules. When I went in, theclub said they’d pay me

under a third of it.When I disagreedthey threatened tokeep my passport. Ihad to sign thecontract just to getout of there. That’s

a problem that youface. It would put me

off going backagain.

Samantha LibreriINTERVIEWBy Padraig Conlon

58

Well known RTE journalist and proud life long Rovers fan Samantha Libreri recently spoke with InRovers about her enduring love for the cluband what the Hoops mean to her.

How long have you beena Rovers supporter, howdid you get into them?By my father giving me a falsesense of success at a very early age!My Dad supported Rovers since hewas boy and in 1994, when I was11 years old he took me to my firstgame; a Rovers V Bohs derby inDalymount Park.

I had never witnessed such passion, excitement or bad language andwas hooked from that moment on.Rovers won that game and went onto win the league that season. WhatI didn’t realise then was that it wouldbe 16 years and I’d be 28 years oldbefore I got to see that again.

Do you go to manymatches?

Myself and my Dad are membersand part-owners of the club. Wehave a season ticket and go to asmany home games as possible. Wedon’t go to many away matchesmainly because my Dad is very superstitious and believes I’m acurse in certain away grounds!

In your opinion what is itabout Rovers that makesthem a special club?Being a Shamrock Rovers fan is likebeing part of a family. A familywhose history and heritage you’revery proud of.

A family who make you feel whenyou’re with them like nobody elsecan. And a family who you’re will-ing to put up with through the baddays because you know that when

it’s good there’s nothing else like itin the world.

What has been your mostmemorable Rovers game? There are so many, but the EuropaLeague tie with Spurs in WhiteHeart Lane really stands out.

It came near the end of an incred-ible two years for the club andwhen Stephen Rice put us 1-0 up,for the eight or so minutes we were ahead, I truly believed that wewere going on to win the wholetournament.

We were quickly brought back toearth of course but it didn’t detractfrom the magic of that occasion. Itwas a very symbolic moment for meas to how far the club had come.

Most memorable season for you?2011 was the highlight of my timesupporting Rovers. Just six yearsbefore I had stood in Tolka Parkwatching the club being relegated, teetering on the brink of extinctionbecause of its financial troubles.

By the end of 2011 I had seenRovers move to a permanent homein Tallaght, host Ronaldo and RealMadrid, play competitively againstthe giants of Italian soccer Juventus, win the League for thefirst time in 16 years in 2010 andthen retain it in 2011 while qualify-ing for the group stages of the Europa League in extraordinary circumstances.

I got to travel around Europe toTallin, Copenhagen, London andThessalonika , watching my teamtaking on the likes of FC Copenhagen and Tottenham Hotspur in the process. Even as Irecount it I have to ask myself, didthat actually happen?

Who’s your favourite current player? Stephen Rice who has been a con-sistent and reliable presence in thesquad over the past few seasons.

Favourite player ever and why?Gary Twigg. He made a huge contribution to the revival and therenewal of the club. He wore hisheart on his sleeve and he celebrated every goal he scored forus, like he was a fan.

Favourite Rovers teamever and why?The 2011 squad. It will be difficult

Page 59: InTallaght EDITION 40

InRovers59 for anyone to equal what theyachieved and how they achieved it

Any funny stories frombeing a Rovers supporter?Humour is a huge part of theRovers experience. The witticismsof my fellow fans never cease toentertain me. But I do get a laughwhen fans first experience sittingbeside my father. He gets very execited and has this kind of gut-teral roar which frightens youngchildren and adults alike!

Favourite away ground? The Stadio Alberta Braglia in Modena, Italy. It was where weplayed Juventus and was my firstexperience of European football.

Even though the Juve fans weretechnically away (U2 were playingin their stadium so the match wasrelocated to Modena) I could notget over the sound that they made.

It was incredibly intimidating andenthralling at the same time. Andthere was the biblical rain whichcaused almost everything in mybag to disintegrate. We were so re-lieved that the match was allowedto go ahead that we never reallynoticed how soaked we were!

Do you think the LeagueOf Ireland gets enoughcoverage in the media in this country? No but I think that’s related to thelow attendance figures at manygames. If more people supportedtheir local clubs there would be agreater interest and I’m sure itwould be better for football in Ireland as a whole.

Why do you think Irishpeople would rather support English clubsthan go and watch theirlocal team?I have no idea, as I didn’t grow upwatching football on television orsupporting an English club. But Ithink if more people went and supported their local side and experienced the atmosphere, theexcitement and the sheer joy thatlive football can bring, they wouldfeel differently about domesticfootball.

If you could change anything about theLeague Of Ireland what would it be?The facilities. Shamrock Rovers arelucky to have a modern stadiumwhich is well run and maintained. It has transformed the supportbase of the club and made it a safeand family friendly place.

Nothing makes me happier thanseeing young children, in particulargroups of young girls, coming togames with their parents or on theirown. It changes the whole dynamic.I would love to see other teamsbeing able to replicate that in theirhome grounds.

Do you think Rovers can catch the clubs at the top and mount achallenge for the title in the second half of the season?I think we were in with a chance inthe past few weeks but the 1-1draw with UCD made it highly unlikely. I think the best we canhope for is a European place andeven that won’t be easy.
