Instructions for blood collection
1. Check that you are wearing necessary personal protective equipment.2. Check that you have a clean bluey, lancet, microvette, two alcohol swabs, cotton ball and
band-aid.
3. Introduce yourself to the subject, explain briefly what you are going to do to them and whatyou will measure.
4. Ask the subject if they have any questions (answer if necessary) and THEN ask if theyconsent (verbally) to you taking their blood for analysis.
5. Remove the orange tip on the microvette lid and loosen the microvette in its holder. Ask thesubject which is their preferred hand for sampling (usually non-dominant).
6. Check the warmth of the hand. If the hand is cold/pale ask the subject to pump theirfist/warm their hands to improve perfusion.
7. Open an alcohol wipe and ask the subject if they have a preference for which finger to prick.8. Wipe the pad (not tip or side) of the finger with alcohol wipe, place the wipe on the base of
the subjects thumb (in case you need it again) and waft the wiped finger to allow the alcohol
to dry.
9. While the finger dries, take your lancet and twist/screw the purple plastic spear out of thelancet. Then twist the barrel indicator to maximum depth (longest indicator).
10.When the finger is dry, whilst holding the lancet, place your finger under the subjects finger, apply the tip of the lancet onto the target finger pad and apply firm pressure.
11.Tell the subject there will be a very slight sting.12.Upon applying firm pressure, depress the trigger of the lancet, you will hear a click.13.Remove the lancet from the finger pad, a very small drop of blood will appear.14.Wipe the first drop of blood from the finger using cotton.15.Ask the subject to place their hand beside them (the lower the better) and ask THEM to
massage the hand (quite firm) from base to the tip of the finger (demonstrate for them).
16.Pick-up your microvette (always keep microvette horisontal).17.When a large drop of blood forms on the fingertip, apply the very tip of the microvette to
the blood (the blood should travel up the microvette).
18.If the blood drop smears or begins to run, wipe off with alcohol and cotton, and repeat frompoint 15, otherwise continue massaging and collecting (keep microvette horisontal).
19.The microvette should be filled to approx. full.20.Once complete, replace orange tip on the microvette (careful keep horizontal), and THEN
seal the top cap onto the microvette, place back into the microvette barrel (label with
subject surname)
21.Wipe fingertip with alcohol swab and apply band-aid.22.Place all consumables into appropriate waste containers and leave the area as you found it
(including placing new equipment onto the bluey (only if clean)).

General notes
Always be aware of your patient, whether they are feeling OK and whether you are feeling OK.
You will be required to go through this ENTIRE process, if you are selected for haematology or
biochemistry practical assessment. HOWEVER, you will NOT be required to actually prick and collectblood from your subject (although you will have to demonstrate every step above (ie. how you
would ask the subject to massage hand, use the microvette to collect blood and even putting on a
band-aid !).
