1. GENERAL

1-1. INTRODUCTIONThis instruction manual provides informationfor the installation and use of the FU20 andPH20, four-in-one wide body pH sensors. While both sensors can be used in a varietyof applications, in general, the FU20 is thechoice for the majority of typical wastewaterand process applications. The PH20 with itspatented "compensation panels", is selectedwhen more aggressive chemicals (PVDFbody) or varying process temperatures andpressures are present.

The Model PH20 is patented design, provi-des continuous compensation for temperatu-re and pressure changes in the processresulting in an extremely accurate and stablemeasurement. With this one sensor, pH,redox (ORP) and temperature can be meas-ured simultaneously. The PH20 can be easilyinstalled using a variety of adapters inStainless Steel or PVDF. You can choosefrom a common 3/4" or 1" NPT threadedconnection or select the optional (/SF4)stainless adapter that allows the use ofYokogawa’s FF40, FS40 or FD40 sensorholders. The Model FU20 offers a simple and costeffective solution for a wide variety of waste-water and process applications. This all-in-one sensor provides simultaneous measure-ment of pH, redox (ORP) and temperature ifdesired. The rugged Ryton body is designedfor easy installation into on-line and immer-sion applications via the 3/4" NPT threadedconnections provided on both ends of thesensor. Optional quick-removal adapters inboth stainless steel and titanium are availableto make calibration and maintenance eveneasier.

Both the PH20 and FU20 include an integralcable of optional lengths designed to minimi-ze the adverse affects of noise can have onthe measurement. This cable is pre-finishedto make connection to any industrial pH ins-trument as simple as possible.

1-2. Unpacking and CheckingUpon delivery, unpack the sensor carefullyand inspect it to ensure it was not damagedduring shipment. If damage is found, retain

the original packing materials (including outerbox) and then immediately notify the carrierand the relevant Yokogawa sales office.Make sure the Model Code on the sensor isthe same as on the packing list. Also, checkany option(s) that were ordered are includedand correct. The PH20 sensor has an identi-fication number on the cable with the fullModel Code and a Serial Number included

1-3. Warranty and ServiceYokogawa products and parts are guaran-teed free from defects in workmanship andmaterial under normal use and service for aperiod of (typically) 12 months from the dateof shipment from the manufacturer. Individualsales organizations can deviate from the typi-cal warranty period, and the conditions ofsale relating to the original purchase ordershould be consulted. Damage caused bywear and tear, inadequate maintenance, cor-rosion, or by the effects of chemical proces-ses are excluded from this warranty covera-ge. In the event of warranty claim, the defec-tive goods should be sent (freight paid) to theService Department of the relevant salesOrganization for repair or replacement (atYokogawa’s discretion). The following infor-mation must be included in the letter accom-panying the returned goods:1. Part Number, Model Code and Serial

Number.2. Original Purchase Order and Date.3. Length of time in service and description

of the process.4. Description of the fault and circumstances

of the failure.5. Process/environmental conditions that

may be related to the failure of the sensor6. Statement as to whether warranty or non-

warranty service is requested.7. Complete shipping and billing instructions

for return of material, plus the name andphone number of a contact person thatcan be reached for further information.

Returned goods that have been in contactwith process fluids must be decontaminatedand disinfected prior to shipment. Goodsshould carry a certificate to this effect, for thehealth and safety of our employees. MaterialSafety Data sheets must be included for allcomponents of the process to which thesensors/fittings have been exposed.

3. INSTALLATION OF PH20

For optimum measurement results, the PH20should be installed in a location that offers anacceptable representation of the processcomposition and DOES NOT exceed thespecifications of the sensor. The PH20 isdesigned with threads on either end of thebody to allow installation via a selection ofadapters, in a wide variety of applications.

3-1. Typical InstallationThe PH20 sensor is designed for in-lineinstallation, via a bypass loop as an immer-sion assembly. For best results the PH20should be mounted with the process comingtowards the sensor (see Fig 1) and positio-ned at least 15° above the horizontal planeto eliminate air bubbles in the glass bulb.

3-2. Preparing the Sensor for UseRemove the sensor from its shipping boxand slide off the "wet pocket" (the tube filledwith solution to keep the measuring ele-ments from drying out in storage or ship-ment).Two sets of O-rings are provided with thesensor, a Viton set and an EPDM set. Thewet pocket is sealed on the sensor with (2)Viton O-rings (K1511DP is 5 sets of 2 eachViton O-rings). An EPDM set is supplied in aplastic bag as an alternative (K1511DQ is 5sets of 2 each EPDM O-rings).

IMPORTANT NOTICEBefore installing the sensor in the process itshould be calibrated. The calibration proce-dure is normally described in the instrumentInstruction Manual, but a general Guide isprovided in Section 7.

3-3. Mounting the SensorApply Teflon (PTFE) tape to the threaded endof the appropriate adapter (step 2). Theninstall the selected adapter (/FN4, /FR4,/SNE, /SR3) in the process, tightening it byapplying a suitable torque using a spanneron the adapter flats see Steps 1 & 3).

Next, screw the PH20 sensor into the adap-ter making sure that there are (2) O-ringsmounted in the correct grooves (step 4).These O-rings form a seal on the straightsection inside the adapter. This means that

the sensor needs only to be hand tightened,(until the O-rings are completely covered) forthe seal to be completed (step 5).

NOTE 1:DO NOT over tighten the sensor, as damagemay result.

NOTE 2:Installing the PH20, requires approximatelyseven turns. Take care, to leave enoughslack so that the cable is not twisted anddamaged.

If you are using one of the FF40, FS40 orFD40 holders, simply screw the adapter(/SF4) on the sensor body at the cable endensuring the O-rings are correctly installed.See Section 6 for instructions to wire thesensor to the instrument.

7. GENERAL CALIBRATION &MAINTENANCE PROCEDURE

7-1. Calibration for pH measurementTo calibrate a pH sensor, two buffer solu-tions with known pH values are required. Itis recommended that one buffer solutionhave a value near to pH 7.00. Dependingon the process value to be measured, thesecond buffer solution should be either aci-dic (below 7.00) or alkaline (above 7.00)area. Normally, the IEC buffers (4.01, 6.87and 9.18) are used.

The following is a very general 2-point cali-bration procedure.

1. Clean the sensor (deposits may beremoved using a 5% (approximate) solu-tion of HCL).

2. Rinse sensor thoroughly with cleanwater.

3. Immerse the sensor in the first buffer(6.87 pH is recommended).

4. Refer to appropriate InstrumentInstruction Manual for Calibration proce-dures (Auto; Manual; Sample, etc.),

5. Rinse sensor thoroughly with cleanwater.

6. Immerse the sensor in the second buffer(4.01 or 9.18 recommended).

7. Repeat Step 4.

During calibration the temperature com-pensation should be active. The instrumentautomatically compensates for the sensitivi-ty change of the pH sensor at differenttemperatures. After calibration is completereplace or re-install the sensor into the pro-cess.

7-2. Calibration for ORP measurementFor ORP calibrations the same procedureand buffer solutions pH 6.87 and pH 4.01are to be used. When 1-20 grams (±1 tea-spoon) quinhydrone is added to eachbuffer, it will produce a stable redox poten-tial of 96 mV and 265 mV respectively.Mostly only 1-point calibrations are perfor-med. Some analyzers also have the possi-bility to adjust the slope (2-point calibra-tion).

7-3. MaintenanceAll pH sensors require routine maintenanceto keep the measuring elements clean andfunctioning. Depending on the process, different cleaning solutions may be requi-red.

EXAMPLES:1. Deposits of limes, hydroxides or carbo-

nates can be removed by immersing thesensor in a solution containing dilutehydrochloric acid (5% is recommended).Afterwards rinse with water.

2. Deposits of oil and fat can be removedwith hot water in conjunction with adetergent. When the results are unsatis-factory, a mild (carbonate based) abrasi-ve can be used.

3. Protein deposits should be removed witha protein enzymatic solution. For instan-ce a solution containing 8.5ml concen-trated hydrochloric acid and 10 grams ofpepsin in 1 liter of water will do.

After cleaning the probe is reinserted intothe process by following the reverse proce-dure.

NOTE:Avoid using non-polar solvent like tri-chloroethylene, toluene or hexane. Cleaning withiso-propanol or methanol is acceptable.

The non-polar solvents will break up thegel-layer on the glass bulb and requiresthat the electrode to be soaked in water forat least 12 hours before functioning nor-mally again.

The Teflon (PTFE) diaphragm of the sensorcan sometimes be regenerated by puttingit in hot (60 to 80°C) 3 molar PotassiumChlorine (KCL) solution and letting it cool toroom temperature. This procedure clearsthe junction of process material and then"draws" the conductive (KCL) back into thejunction.
