7. Explanation of the Change:
The Ph.D. in Health Sciences curriculum includes 5 threads - Teaching, Leadership and Healthcare
Issues, Discipline-Specific Thread, Research and Dissertation - with a minimum of 15 credits required
in each thread. The Ph.D. in Health Sciences Program Outcomes reflect knowledge and competence in
each of these threads.
This request is for the Leadership and Teaching threads to change to 12-15 credits while Research
increases correspondingly to 15-21 credits. The Discipline-specific thread remains at 15 credits. A
maximum of 21 credits hours will be accepted in the research thread.
Rationale: PhD studies, with their focus on scholarly development and the generation of new
knowledge, require a research-intensive curriculum to accommodate students with limited prior
research experience.
In addition to a change in credits required for the individual threads, two course numbers will change
as indicated in the table. This is not a substantial change but is included here for reference. Course
Modification forms are attached.

7. Explanation of the Change:
Students with diverse artistic backgrounds and educational experiences enter this program.
Consolidating the BFA in Art Education within the BFA in Studio Art degree creates a common
core of courses for all art majors from which students then have flexibility to choose to focus in
studio art or art education, or both. This also allows us to more easily develop stackable certificates
within the major to respond to workforce needs.

7. Explanation of the Change:
Students with diverse musical backgrounds and educational experiences enter this program.
Consolidating the three programs into a single major creates a common core of courses for all music
majors from which students then have flexibility to choose to focus on performance, education, or
musical arts. This also allows us to more easily develop stackable certificates within the major to
respond to workforce needs.
The USD Music Department is requesting the title changes in the Music Theory sequence in order
to make our courses align with common practice across the country with regard to Music Theory
Course titles. This is a title change only and will not impact content or credit. These title changes are
being submitted on a separate form (Revised Course Request: Common Course) which indicates
approval from the other BOR institutions.
USD received permission from the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) to consolidate
the BMA in Musical Arts into the BM in Music with specializations in Music Education, Music
Performance, and Musical Arts to form one program.
