FOREWORD

The Brazilian Embassy and the Brazilian American CulturalInstitute (BACI), in Washington, D.C., take pleasure in presenting this Sur-vey of Luso-Brazilian and Latin American Studies which include Brazil andwhich are currently available in Institutions of Higher Learning in the UnitedStates. This is the fourth such survey undertaken by the Embassy and BACIand each succeeding one has borne evidence of an increased interest in thisspecific area.

The data was furnished by the institutions concerned upon ourrequest and, in cases where no reply was received, the information was cor-related from the university or college catalog.

As it is planned to revise and distribute this publication everytwo years, it would be appreciated if we could be informed whenever changesoccur in the curriculum or teaching staff of Luso-Brazilian or Brazilian dis-ci.plines so that we can maintain a current record for a future edition. Wewould further appreciate any suggestion which would improve this ?ublica-tion or assist scholars of Luso-Brazilian studies to continue their valuablecontributions in this field.

It is the desire of the Brazilian Embassy and BACI to lend sup-port to everyone engaged in Brazilian studies. To this end BACI has avail-able, on a free loan basis, slides, tapes and films as well as publicationssold for a very nominal fee. The Embassy distributes the daily "Boletim Especial" and free informative material upon request.

We take this opportunity to thank the many dedicated scholarswho have cooperated with us in preparing this survey. We invite them andtheir colleagues to call upon us whenever they feel we can be of assistance inmatters related to Brazilian studies.
