About the ICAA

The Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA) is the leading nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the practice and appreciation of the classical tradition in architecture, urban planning, and the allied arts. The Institute’s headquarters in New York and 15 regional chapters together offer a diverse array of courses, publications, lectures, awards, and travel programs.

The ICAA is committed to making our cities more beautiful by incorporating classical elements into new buildings and works to ensure that classical design, art, and architecture remain vibrant and thriving fields. This is not easily achieved, and is done by no other organization, so the ICAA has a wide spectrum of programs that include:

• Academic programs – intensives that the ICAA offers in New York and takes on the road to introduce college architecture students to the tenets of classicism and how to apply classical principles to contemporary projects. Student participation is heavily subsidized through scholarships.

• Continuing education programs – evening and weekend courses for architects, designers, and practitioners to maintain their licenses and learn new techniques and perspectives to apply to their professional practices.

• Public lectures – fascinating talks and panels with world leaders from the fields of art, architecture, and design, open to the general public.

• Publications – an annual scholarly journal, The Classicist. • Travel programs – amazing trips for our members to explore inspiring and exclusive

places and spaces around the world. • National Chapters – The ICAA has 15 chapters across the country, each of which

offers programs and courses that reflect the individual needs and interests of their constituencies.

• Awards – the ICAA headquarters and its 15 chapters nationwide hold awards programs to honor and bring attention to the best in classical contemporary design and artistry.

• Middle School courses – the New Heights program introduces middle school students to architecture and design in a fun and engaging way, with walking tours, social media projects, and design competitions.

• Democratization of classicism – the ICAA partners with organizations such as Habitat for Humanity to ensure that beautiful design is available for all.

• Workshops – two to three day classes bringing classical architecture to partnering universities across the country

Thank you for considering sponsorship of the ICAA. With your support, we can further our mission to advance the classical tradition in architecture, urbanism, and their allied arts. Educating the next generation is key to preserving the techniques, traditions, and practices that, for centuries, have served as the foundation for the world’s most beautiful and inspiring spaces and works of art.

The Historic Plaster Cast Collection !

Formed over a 12 year period, from 1883-1895, the plaster cast collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art was one of the most comprehensive in its day. Casts were considered an integral component in achieving the museum’s educational objectives. They offered a wider audience unprecedented access to some of the most important and influential works of art and architecture.

A significant portion of this seminal 19th-century collection from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City is now a vital permanent resource of the ICAA. The approximately 100 casts that today constitute this publicly-displayed holding are used as a tool of pedagogy and direct inspiration for students of architecture, cast drawing, painting, sculpture, drawing and their allied building arts. They serve concurrently as a compelling and accessible record of the classical tradition throughout its record from its Greco-Roman origins to the present day.

This collection is conceived as an ongoing endeavor. The Institute procures additional casts from other deaccessioned museum collections as well as from private donors as opportunity allows.

Viewing Gallery The ICAA is finalizing a formal viewing gallery on the 6th floor of 20 West 44th Street, New York, NY. The gallery will house a rotating selection of permanent casts from the collection. It will be open to members of the ICAA and the general public as an invaluable teaching space for Continuing Education Courses, visiting school groups, and the general public. Additional funding is needed to ensure the ongoing maintenance and essential conservation efforts to preserve this collection in perpetuity.

The Dick Reid Teaching Collection

Dick Reid is one of the world's leading architectural artisans. He operated a shop and studio in York, England for almost half a century. In that time he restored numerous Medieval, Renaissance and Enlightenment era buildings including Somerset House in London and Windsor Castle. In 2005, he retired and closed the shop, and generously offered remaining items in the shop to ICAA to utilize the collection for teaching and to identify the objects as 'The Dick Reid Collection'.

The collection consists of fifty to seventy-five pieces, most in carved wood, some in plaster. Many are process pieces that illustrate steps in ornamental fabrication. Many are comparative groupings, of stair balusters, for example. Many are from buildings of historical note. Some are old, like the 900 plus year old carved wood angel's wing, and its contemporary counterpart made by the DR studio. Five or six of the pieces are somewhat larger.

Most pieces are in the 12" to 18" range of length and width; and less than 6" in depth. A few are larger. Most would weigh in the 5 to 10 pound range. The collection is currently located in Dick's former studio and shop in York, England.

The President’s Council

Established in 2014, the President’s Council is an intimate group whose primary interest is in advancing opportunities for the next generation of classical architects, designers, artists, and historians.

Led by Co-Chairs Helen Davis Chaitman and Denise Lefrak Calicchio, the Council serves as the driving force of support for the Institute’s multifaceted educational initiatives. A distinguished seasonal calendar of events provides opportunity for these likeminded individuals to meet and discuss.

Events and Gather ings

As evidenced by the famed Roman Forum and Ancient Agora of Athens, the centrality of conversation and community to the classical tradition cannot be understated. On a small scale, the President’s Council gatherings advance these long-standing traditions. These occasions serve to foster the kind of thoughtfulness and camaraderie that create the esprit de corps of all great and enduring cultural institutions.

Council Members are invited to attend:

• Round Table Dinners with esteemed architects, designers, and academicians • Private tours of some of the region’s most striking classical residences and gardens • Private exhibitions of student work and presentations of work • Cocktail parties and other exclusive social events

Membership

Membership dues are $5,000 for individual members, $10,000 for dual members. These dues are fully tax-deductible and contribute directly to educational offerings and new initiatives at the ICAA. For donors wishing to support an educational program directly at the $10,000 level or above, membership in the President’s Council is complimentary.

For more information or to proceed with the membership process, please contact ICAA President, Peter Lyden at (212) 730-9646 x103

Education Programs

Education is the cornerstone of the ICAA’s mission and the primary focus of our programming. Through continuing education courses, intensives, the Summer Studio, and growing partnerships with middle schools, high schools and universities, the ICAA provides quality education in classical design. It is through the support and active participation of our sponsors that we are able to bring successful programs and new initiatives across the 15 chapters. Funding supports scholarships for students of exceptional merit or with financial aid needs, enrolled in ICAA programs as well as stipends for guest lecturers, critics, and program instructors, and facilities.

Summer Studio

The Summer Studio in Classical Architecture is one of the ICAA’s flagship programs and is an intensive in the study of design, architecture, and art, following the method of the famed École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. The Summer Studio targets college students and young professionals and is designed to be both accessible and affordable. Registration is limited to just 18 participants to attract the highest-calibre candidates and to ensure one-on-one attention from instructors.

The Summer Studio provides in-depth instruction in an atelier setting while also offering coursework in observational drawing, architectural drafting, systematic design methodology, the classical orders, geometry and proportion, traditional methods of architectural wash rendering and drawing, the history and theory of classical architecture, and modeling and sculpting. Students conduct detailed studies of New York City’s architectural masterpieces through on-site observation and field drawing. Global leaders and experts in architecture and the allied arts teach the courses and provide students with invaluable career guidance and networking opportunities. It is an incomparable and wholly unique experience for young people to be taught in this time-honored tradition and to build relationships with renowned leaders of their fields. The Summer Studio curriculum fills a very real need in today’s architectural education context and helps train the next generation of great architects, artists, and practitioners in the time-honored tenets of classicism.

New Heights

The New Heights initiative is an arts-in-education program, conceived by the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art, to expose middle and high school students to the classical architecture all around them in cities and neighborhoods across America. Exposing young people to architecture inspires creativity and strategic thinking, invites them to reflect on and learn from the past, and promotes an understanding of human culture, which fosters a more global worldview.

The program is set to launch in the fall of 2015 and will consist of in-class lectures and drawing classes taught by ICAA educators and architects on architecture, history, place-making, building practices, etc. The program will also lead students through city and neighborhood architectural walking tours to experience local architecture and field trips to buildings under construction to witness the building process first-hand. The program will fully embrace social media outlets like Instagram, Pinterest, Tumblr as well as multimedia platforms including video blogs and You Tube channels to better engage students and promote the program. New Heights will also provide a valuable introduction to the many career opportunities in the fields of architecture and the allied arts.

The New Heights program will conclude with a competition that challenges the students to design their own building in the classical style of their choosing using the principles and skills they learned from the program. The competition will be judged by professional architects and practitioners from the ICAA network.

The benefits of incorporating the arts into secondary school education programs are numerous and well-documented. Architecture is a particularly unique and applicable art form as it utilizes many disciplines at once and is already apparent in students’ everyday lives. Therefore, when studied, it makes for a multifaceted learning experience.

Benefits Seasonal Lead Sponsor at $20,000: Company name mentioned in all printed and electronic communication related to the program and mentioned in featured blog posts and newsletter article related to New Heights, link to your website on New Heights home page for 1 year, invitation to final showing of student work Seasonal Co-Lead Sponsor at $10,000: Link to your website on New Heights home page for 1 year, invitation to final showing of student work, featured sponsor of ICAA newsletter for one month with a link to your website (sent to 18,000 constituents) Donor at $5,000: Company logo and link to your website on New Heights home page for 1 year, invitation to final showing of student work Supporter at $2,500: Company name and link to your website on New Heights home page for 1 year, invitation to final showing of student work
