On January 14, 2015, we will add Aruba - Manaus (Brazil) and Miami - Havana routes out of our hubs in Aruba and Curaçao. Later in the year we plan to add more interesting destinations to our network, including Cali and Bucaramanga in Colombia, San Juan in Puerto Rico, and Quito in Ecuador. Thus, by the end of 2015 we will offer our passengers an even more extensive network within the Pan American region, notwithstanding the fact that we are already able to connect our passengers to destinations in South America, Europe, North America, Asia, Africa and Australia via our partner airlines, such as KLM/Air France, Avianca, GOL and TACA.

For InselAir, refl ecting on the year 2014 also means looking into

the future and what 2015 will bring. As we ended the last month

of 2014, we were still implementing the goals set at the end of

2013 and we are pleased to say that development is going as

planned. The fi nal part of the plans for 2014 are illustrated by

the re-launch of our Curaçao - Trinidad & Tobago route and the

addition of the Curaçao - Georgetown route to our network on

December 15th and 18th respectively.

La celebración tiene una larga historia que se remonta al siglo XIX y hasta fue declarada “Obra Maestra del Patrimonio Oral e Intangible de la Humanidad” por la UNESCO en el 2003. Este carnaval histórico tiene paralizada a toda la ciudad de Barranquilla con los bailes, festivales, desfiles y orquestas más famosos de Colombia. El entusiasmo de los curramberros y su amor a la música y al baile son simplemente conta-giosos y hacen del carnaval una experiencia verdaderamente mágica.

En Río de Janeiro se celebra el carnaval más grande y más popular del mundo. Trinidad & Tobago es considerado el mejor del Caribe y podría hacerle sudar tinta a Río. Tomando en consideración todo esto, ¿quién sabía que Barranquilla es el escenario del segundo carnaval más grande del mundo? Cuando de números y diversidad cultural se trata, Barranquilla es el hogar de la mayor tradición folclórica de Colombia, y con mucho la más interesante.

Con su popular lema “Quien lo vive es quien lo goza”, el carnaval de Barranquilla deja encantados a sus residentes y visitantes con sus colores vivos y su música alta. El trajín de costumbre de la ciudad se suspende durante los cuatro días anteriores a la Cuaresma. Las fiestas empiezan muchísimo antes, cuando los curramberros eligen a su Reina del Carnaval en octubre del año anterior. Esto es para darle tiempo a la Reina para prepararse para el gran evento en febrero. La

The celebration has a long history, dat-ing all the way back to the 19th century and has even been declared by UNESCO as “a world masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity” in 2003. This historic carnival has the entire city of Barranquilla paralyzed with Colombia’s most famous dances, festivals, parades and orchestras. The Curramberros’ enthusiasm and love for music and dance are simply infectious, making their carnival a truly magical experience.

With its popular motto ‘He who lives it, is he who enjoys it,’ Barranquilla’s carnival casts residents and visitors alike under a colorful and loud music spell. The city’s usual hustle and bustle is put on hold dur-ing the four days before Lent. The partying starts much sooner with the Curramberros selecting their Carnival Queen in October of the previous year. This is to give her time to prepare for the big event in Febru-

OriginsThe big parade starts on the Saturday before Ash Wednesday. It is inaugurated by the queen who takes to the streets by storm with her entourage, dancing to different music and dance styles that are a part of Barranquilla’s eclectic carnival. The carnival has a Caribbean flair and is a mix-ture of the colonizing European, enslaved African, and native Amerindian cultures. Again, seriously who knew Colombia had such an amazing carnival to offer?

The Carnival QueenThe Carnival Queen is responsible for leading Barranquilla’s massive parade and King Momo accompanies her in carrying out this task. The Queen has a large responsibility. She is considered an ambassador of Barranquilla, and will always be considered a queen and role model for the ‘Curramberros’, even long after her reign is over. The Carnival Queen attends all parades dressed in decadent costumes, as she is the most important figure during this four-day celebration. It is customary that she is selected from the city’s crème de la crème; you need financial means to even be considered for the competition. There is also a children’s queen and king, neighborhood queens and there is even a Gay Queen! This year’s Barranquilla Carnival

OríginesEl Gran Desfile comienza el sábado anterior al miércoles de Ceniza. Lo inaugura la Reina, quien toma por asalto las calles, junto con su séquito, que baila los diferentes estilos de música y de baile que son parte del carnaval ecléctico de Barranquilla. El carnaval tiene un carácter caribeño y es una mezcla de las culturas de los europeos colonizadores, los africanos esclavizados y los amerindios nativos. La Reina del CarnavalLa Reina del Carnaval es responsable de dirigir el masivo desfile de Barranquilla, y el Rey Momo la acompaña mientras realiza esta tarea. La Reina tiene una gran responsabilidad. Queen, Cristina Felfle Fernández de Castro was crowned after a three-month competition. She happens to be the daughter of former queen Maribel Fernández (1987). King Momo, on the other hand, is based on the Greek God Momus, the God of Satire. Like the queen, he is chosen during a competition, and leads the parades during the 4-day festivities.

MarimondaBarranquilla’s carnival cannot exist without Marimonda, one of the key figures parading down La Arenosa Street. Created by Barran-quilla’s commoners, Marimonda is the ultimate

mockery of the Barranquillero, a figure that has the objective to ridicule the city’s ‘high society’. His colorful costume consists of a mask with a long nose, big ears, patched suit, jacket and pants worn inside out and back-wards. If you look at him closely, the figure looks like a combination of an elephant and a monkey. The men dressed in Marimonda cos-tumes are a favorite in Barranquilla’s parade, jumping down the street with loud whistles. Other popular costumes include the Congo, which is one of the oldest traditions. It’s a very colorful costume worn by men decorat-ed with sequins, bows and bells. They wear

Les encanta burlarse de la alta sociedad o las celebridades colombianas. Personas de todas las profesiones y condiciones sociales se reúnen para bailar a los sonidos de la cumbia, el garabato, el son negro, la puya, el porro, el mapale, la gaita, los merecumbés y muchos otros estilos musicales. Gran parte de la música tiene influencias africanas. La percusión, en todo caso, es hipnotizadora, y resulta difícil no moverse a sus ritmos. La cumbia, el estilo musical más importante del carnaval, tiene elementos africanos, indios y europeos en su música y baile. La mujer mueve las caderas de forma sutil y elegante al ritmo del tambor y de la flauta. La cumbia es una representación del cortejo. El popular gara-bato representa la mística batalla entre la vida y la muerte y el congo es una oda al recuerdo de la esclavitud en las Américas.

People from all walks of life come together to dance to the sounds of the Cumbia, Garaba-to, El Son Negro, Puya, Porro, Mapale, Gaita, Merecumbes, and many more music styles. A lot of the music has African influences, the drums are if anything hypnotic, making it hard not to move to it. Cumbia, which is the largest music style of Carnival, has African, Indian and Euro-pean elements in its music and dance. Women move their hips subtly and elegantly to the rhythm of the drum and flute. The Cumbia is a depiction of courtship. The popular Garabato is a representation of the mystical battle between life and death and the Congo is an ode to the memory of slavery in the Americas. Every single dance and costume has a special meaning that is interlinked to Barranquilla’s culture, history, and current events.

Los desfilesEl carnaval se celebra durante los cuatro días anteriores al miércoles de Ceniza, y aunque no lo creas, en este breve pla-zo de tiempo se realizan un montón de actividades. El carnaval empieza el sábado con la simbólica “Batalla de las Flores”. A la cabeza de este desfile está la carroza de la Reina, desde la cual ella tira flores mientras baila acompañada de un séqui-to de Príncipes y Princesas. Durante este desfile verás aparecer a las típicas figuras del carnaval, como el Rey Momo, María Moñitas, las Marimondas, las Gigantonas, enanos de grandes cabezas y el Hombre Caimán. El Gran Desfile toma lugar al día siguiente, cuando aparecen más figuras y se desfila bailando bailes folclóricos como la cumbia, el garabato, el torito y las hilan-deras. into this short time span. Carnival kicks off on Saturday with the symbolic “Batalla de las Flores”, which translates into Battle of the Flowers. This parade is headed by the Queen’s float, from which she throws flowers whilst dancing accompanied by an entourage of Princes and Princesses. During this parade you will see the typical carnival characters emerge such as King Momo, María Moñitas, the Marimondas, the Gigantonas (the giants), dwarfs with large heads and Hombre Caimán (Alligator Man). The Grand Parade takes place the following day where more characters emerge and folk dances like the Cumbia, Garabato, Torito and Hilanderas are paraded. The Calle 84 parade takes place on the third day of Carnival. It’s another crazy party with

Las viudas realizan procesiones de ataúd abierto con un

Joselito’s Funeral On the last day of Carnival, traditionally on a Tuesday, Barranquilla holds an annual funeral to mourn the death of ‘Joselito,’ one of Barranquilla’s most representative characters. Joselito symbolizes the festivities that make up Barranquilla’s carnival. The myth goes- that after the four days of intense partying and way too much drinking. Joselito symbolically

“dies” and is “buried” by his cheerful “widows” who were there with him partying during Car-nival. The widows hold open his coffin during processions with a “dead” Joselito lying inside; he occasionally gets up to salute the crowd during the festivities! Joselito’s funeral is how Barranquilla says goodbye to the “flesh”, thus closing the carnival season.

Fun fact: there are many Joselito’s all over the city. You will see people from all ages, beliefs, and social standing roaming the streets of Barranquilla with a Joselito figure, giving him the proper funeral. Apparently this tradition is based on true events. Years ago, a man, who disappeared during Carnival, was found un-conscious on the street. His family organized a funeral for him but he woke up and sat up in the coffin during the procession. With Joselito and the burning of King Momo, Barranquilla welcomes Lent, which officially starts the next day on Ash Wednesday, thus ending Carnival until the following year.

Joselito “muerto” adentro, ¡quien de vez en cuando se levanta para saludar a la multitud durante las festividades! El entierro de Joselito es la forma en que Barranquilla le dice adiós a la “carne” como cierre de la temporada de carnaval. Hecho divertido: Hay muchos Joselitos dispersos por toda la ciudad. Verás a personas de todas las edades, creencias y posiciones sociales deambular por las calles de Barran-quilla con una figura de Joselito para darle el entierro que se merece. Parece que esta tradición está basada en hechos reales. Hace años un hombre, que desapareció durante el carnaval, fue encontrado inconsciente en la calle. Su familia le organizó un funeral, pero él despertó y se erigió en el ataúd durante la procesión. Con Joselito y la quema del Rey Momo, Barranquilla le da la bienvenida a la Cuaresma, la cual empieza oficialmente al día siguiente, el miércoles de Ceniza, poniéndole fin al carnaval hasta el año siguiente.

Cada uno de los bailes y disfraces tiene un signifi cado especial que está entrelazado con la cultura, la historia y los acontecimientos actuales de Barranquilla.

I have dreamed of Cartagena without knowing of its existence for many

years. This quaint little city is submersed in Spanish colonial architecture but

seasoned with Caribbean culture. The only thing I can say is that Gabriel Garcia

Marquez was right when he described the city in his books, and as outrageous as

This gem is one of those places that should only exist in dreams, but has somehow managed to manifest itself in reality. Call me crazy, but I left Cartagena inspired and convinced that anything is possible in this little paradise. It is a wonderful location for weddings, honeymoons, or a simple geta-way. This coastal city is home to some of the most captivating colonial architecture in the western hemisphere, complete with lovely cobblestone streets and ocean views. The walls around the historic center were once required to protect the city’s inhabitants from pirates and other invaders. Luckily it worked, because today, hundreds of years later, these very same walls add character to the city and are the perfect shade for lovers. It is without a doubt the most romantic city in Colombia, and possibly the Western Hemisphere.

Living History There is so much to do in Cartagena that it will take you a few trips to soak it all in. The many fortresses and monuments are a testament to the city’s adventurous colonial history. It is filled with stories of war, love and piracy. In fact, the city was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its key role in the West Indies Trading Route from the 16th to the 18 century. The San Felipe fortress and castle, the clock tower, and the many squares still remain to tell the tale.

Getsemaní This burgeoning area is hands down the cool-est part of the historic center. Plan on getting lost amid the architecture, street art, bars, boutique hotels, artists, and plazas, for they are great places to stroll about in Cartagena. The bright colors, narrow streets and welcom-ing Cartageneros characterize Getsemaní. The blocks are splashed with wonderful graffiti art, making it an open-air art gallery.

CuisineCartagena’s cuisine is nothing short of excel-lent, with some of the country’s best restau-rants. One of my favorites is Cocina Pepina, a tiny Costeño restaurant located in the vibrant Getsemaní district. It offers an assortment of the tastes of the Bolívar Grande region. They serve typical home cooked meals to be found

in this area. Some of my favorites are the ‘mote de queso’ and ‘sancocho’ soups. El Santísimo is also a favorite. It’s a fusion of French high cuisine and Caribbean food, yet it’s typical of Cartagena. These restaurants are fantastic, but do not overlook the street food, which is a huge attraction in Cartagena. Try the Carimañola and arepa ’e huevo, which are both to die for and make sure not to miss out on the ‘Limonada de coco’ or coconut lemonade.

Cartagena by Night Cartagena by day is quite charming, but come nighttime the city transforms into a dining and partying hotspot. Aunque estos restaurantes son fantásticos, tampoco debes perderte la comida callejera, que constituye una atracción enorme en Cartagena. Prueba la carimañola y la arepa de huevo, dos absolutas delicias. Tampoco te pierdas la oportunidad de refrescarte con una limonada de coco.

Cartagena de nocheCartagena de día es bastante encantadora, pero de noche la ciudad se transforma en un lugar con excelentes opciones para cenar y salir de fiesta. Inspiring streets History buffs are not the only ones flocking to Pietermaai District. Local artists love to roam the narrow streets for inspiration and their artwork can be found all over the district. A few years ago, Hortence Brouwn, a sculptor living in the area, was inspired to turn the staircase leading up to her apartment into a beautiful work of art. “Although my work is carving stone sculp-tures and bronze casting, I teamed up with a local welder to bring the three sculptures to life,” she says. Brouwn is responsible for creating the most photographed site in Pietermaai District as well. Dubbed Zulaika by the artist, it’s an impressive two-me-ter tall sculpture of a woman in curlers

relaxing under a lush tree, was inspired by the women often found on the streets in the area. “I love the neighborhood. I usually meet prospective clients for coffee and a stroll in the neighborhood. It’s a great way for me to introduce them to my art and it’s always fun. It’s like having one big office,” Brouwn says.

A hot ticket Today, Pietermaai District is again a preferred place to live. It has everything a resident would need within walking dis-tance. However, most people would agree that it is the residents that give the area its ‘couleur locale’. “Stay a few days in the area and you’ll easily spot the permanent residents,” Brouwn says. “I always recom-mend my favorite places to friends and family and every so often I join my neigh-bor for a cold beer and we share stories.” Even though many of its current residents are new to the area, Pietermaai District

Colonial Hip Originally a residential neighborhood, which owed its existence to a lack of space within the city walls at the beginning of the 18th century, Pietermaai District is now home to many trendy lounge areas and dotted with specialty shops and art studios. It is said that the area was named after the Dutch captain Pieter de Meij. The neighborhood attracted wealthy merchants, resulting in impressive mansions built in the Dutch architectural

styles of the 18th and 19th century. In the mid-19th century, after the city walls were torn down, Pietermaai became a hub for ideas, business, and culture. The theaters and small art shops added to the neighborhood’s appeal. For longtime residents, it was painful to see their beloved Pietermaai slowly being taken over by drug peddlers in the late 20th century. The residents retreated indoors and wealthier families moved to safer parts of the island, leaving the streets and iconic build-ings for criminals to wreak havoc on. Since then, most of the derelict buildings have been restored and sleek, modern buildings have arisen in vacant plots. Walking through the Pietermaai District of today, you can still spot the remnants of that time in one or two buildings that bear its scars. To some, it is that stark contrast between the old and the new, which gives the area its distinctive character. It’s no wonder that photo walking tours in the neighborhood are very popular with tourists and locals alike.

Unique and creativedesignsI started my little dichroic glass business selling my jewelry at the market stand which is only active during cruise ship season (6 months of the year). The reaction to my jewelry was very positive as people said they had never seen anything like it be-fore. My designs reflect the beautiful aqua colors of the ocean and the bold and bright tones of the Caribbean. I found myself very quickly working day and night to keep up

with demand during the cruise ship season but then for the rest of the year I had nowhere to display my work. My husband and I decided to open up a shop to have a year round business. My brother and sister-in-law (Sergio & Marilena) were moving to Bonaire from Italy and they agreed to run the shop and help out in the production. They arrived on Bonaire in September 2012. Now we have many unique and creative designs as no two pieces are alike. Each is a one of a kind artwork.

Mud Bathing in Volcándel TotumoA mere 30-minute drive from Cartagena towards Barranquilla takes you to Volcán del Totumo, which offers the unique opportu-nity to swim in its crater. The volcano looks like a tiny, 12 meter high hill, which you ascend and descend via stairs on its sides. It has a diameter of no more than 3 meters but it is almost 3 kilometers deep. The mud density keeps you afloat, preventing you from sinking down into the crater. Standing up is also a bit challenging, but you can enjoy this mud bath in style! The guides will gladly dunk you in the mud, massage you and style your hair in the latest mud trend. From time to time you will see a huge bubble surface. Don’t be alarmed though, it’s the methane gas popping up to renew the mud. After your bath, you can descend and wash up in the nearby lake’s lukewarm water. This is a one-of-a-kind experience, and a must do when visiting Cartagena.

The snow covered mountain peak reaches an altitude of 4,421 meters. The Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta is the place to witness one of life’s miracles. It has one of the most surreal sunrises, where spectators lose sight of the clear horizon. For a moment, you may actual-ly feel like you are floating in the sky.

Quinta de San PedroAlejandrino SanctuaryThis is the house where Simon Bolivar passed away in 1830. Today it is the home of the Museo Bolivariano, which holds the libera-tor’s personal belongings. It was declared a sanctuary of the fatherland by the national government.

ChaitreOne of the most exciting national holidays in Suriname is Holi Phagwa. On this day, Friday, March 6, 2015, the Hindus celebrate the beginning of the new year. According to the Hindu calendar, this day is the begin-ning of the first month called Chaitre. It is the day after the full moon and coincides with the beginning of spring in the northern hemisphere. On this occasion everyone joins the party, regardless of the different reli-gions of the diverse population in Suriname. Five days prior to the celebration of Holi, the pandit, Hindu spiritual leader, determines when to burn the Holika.

The storyThe religious story behind Holi Phagwa started long ago in India when a powerful demon king Hirayakashap reigned. People were afraid of him and worshiped him as a god. His son, Prahalad refused to worship his father, because he believed that Vishnu, the protector of the universe, was his god. Therefore the king wanted his son dead. In the palace there lived a sister of the king named Holika, who was said to be a witch. She had heard of the disobedience of Prah-alad and devised an evil plan. She suggested that Prahalad bring an offering to Vishnu by climbing together with her up a pyre. She se-

cretly wore a nonflammable rug so that only Prahalad would burn. Many people came to the square on the night of the burning. But when Holika and Prahalad stood upon the pyre, only the witch perished in the flames and Prahalad was unharmed and looked radiant. Vishnu appeared in a half lion/half human form and tore the king to pieces. The people were happy, dancing and singing as Holika was burnt and Prahalad lived.

Colored powderDuring the party everyone wishes each other Subh Holi: Happy New Year. The day is full of laughter, singing and dancing. Participants in the festival sing chautaals, traditional Hindustani music. During the afternoon and evening they sprinkle each other with colored powder and colored water. The meaning behind this custom is to express that everyone is equal; no distinction is made between ranks, poverty or wealth. The red color symbolizes victory, while the green color represents hope for and faith in the future. The motto of Holi Phagwa is “becoming a new man” and cele-brating the victory of good over evil.

LabelingResearchers began the trend of categoriza-tion in the 1920’s with the generation called “The Depression Era”. This group was born be-tween 1912 and 1921, which currently makes them more than a century old. Researchers labeled these individuals as conservative, compulsive savers, people who maintained a low debt, oriented toward work before pleas-ure, and with a sense of moral obligation.

Generation Y and ZDecades later we are still labeling ourselves to identify who we are as individuals in society, with Generations Y and Z the latest additions to the list. Generation Y (aka Echo Boomers or Millennials) were born between 1977 and 1994. Gen Y is classi-fied as more ethnically diverse, incredi-bly sophisticated, technology wise, and immune to most traditional marketing and

sales pitches. This group is flexible and is constantly looking for change in fashion, lifestyle, and technology.

Generation Z (the-yet-to-be-researched-socie-ty) were born between 1995 and 2012. They are growing up in a highly sophisticated media and computer environment and will be much more experienced than their forerunners, Gen Y.

Nameless generationThroughout the generations we have adopt-ed some characteristic features of those that came before, such as maintaining a low debt, saving money and combining the de-termination to have a career with pleasure. That is why Generation Z is still being re-searched to determine its own identity and to figure out what the future holds for the next generations. One thing is certain; the current generation born from 2012 is still nameless. It may be that they will become the first to use numerical symbols instead of letters, like for example Generation # or Greek symbols such as Generation . We’ll just have to wait and see.

Since the beginning of the 1900’s consumers have been grouped into various categories such as gender, nationality, race and relationship status. This categorization has helped defi ne the many different preferences of consumers based on demographics, socioeconomics, brand affi nity and psychographics.
