“It’s interesting to note the breakdown ofdestinations which respondents are travelling to. Despite the economic crisis inthe eurozone, around 90% are travelling toEurope which is in line with our clients’ travel patterns. Most SME companies havebusiness interests in European markets. TheFar East and Middle East are also emergingas strong business travel destinations, whilstthe USA is still a key market.

“However around a quarter of respondentsstill book their own travel individually ratherthan using a travel management company(TMC). They are definitely missing out onsignificant savings and efficiencies.

“I noticed that one respondent makesaround 50 trips a year to Europe andAustralasia, but still handles all the bookingsthemselves – that must take up a great dealof someone’s time, trawling the internetlooking for fares and booking hotels. They have a turnover of under £5m so business travel must be a significant cost ifthey are travelling to that extent. Perhaps thecompany feels that its turnover size means a TMC would not be interested in handlingtheir business, but I would recommend they talk to a specialist such as CorporateTraveller. It’s a myth that booking your own travel online will be cheaper – there are countless hidden extras in terms of cancellation or change fees, and you cannever be sure that you found the cheapestfare by searching through individual airlinewebsites. If you partner with an expert travelmanager, you can expect access to globallycompetitive prices for air, hotel and car hireand rapid turnaround on best prices for your business”
